What happens when your "v1" goes viral before you finish "v2"?  
While working with Raspberry Circle we hit a pivot point when we were designing the new character set for Emy. The original design gained so much traction on social media that it became a brand anchor.
We paused the update, but I couldn’t let this work stay hidden in a folder. I was exploring more emotional depth and exaggerated animations to really bridge the gap between user and digital pet.
We got all the way through rigging, building the start of the state machines, and animating some of the character animation states in Rive 

Rive allowed us to create one rig and with the state machine we can switch between the different characters and different clothing meaning you don’t need to create different animations for each character.

“Does anyone else feel the urge to do something with their hands?” said Kalika Sharma in a call with a bunch of cool people in Austin Saylor ‘s project 200k cohort (which I’m loving btw).

Well, I’m here to say I do this. It’s called Kigumi and it’s a miniature version of the famous Japanese woodworking method that doesn’t use nails, screws or adhesives. 

I got this little puzzle from the airport as I was leaving Japan. To be more precise, my fiancé got it for me. It sat in a corner fo a while until I started working on it a few weeks back. 

It takes a while, it’s tedious and I love it. It’s something artistic to work on when I’m not animating or working in Rive. And it gives me room to think and slow down.

If you want a short primer on Rive this is a great, quick overview about creating one of the most used types of interactions: hovering. Give Joey Judkins some love! There are lots of tutorials out there, but only a few great teachers.

A great take on the state and future of motion design from my peer and long time inspiration Emanuele Colombo .

The reason LinkedIn doesn’t care if it’s overrun by AI slop is because it’s already filled with human slop. Somewhere along the way, we were convinced that being more robotic and less human makes us more employable. Few people share real opinions here because many have internalized the idea that it’s bad for business; withholding their views to see which way the wind blows. To those that do: I’m your fanboy.

I’m an opinionated person (especially when it comes to injustice). I don’t soften my views to make them easier to consume. At the same time, I care deeply about other people. I love my family and friends. If you saw me with a dog, you’d call a doctor. Laughter is my favorite contagion.

I’m also not resistant to changing my mind. I’ve done it publicly (more than once) when I’ve heard a good-faith opposing argument. That doesn’t always lead to agreement, and that’s fine. It’s not my fault if I can’t change your mind, and it’s not your fault if you can’t change mine. Everyone should be protective of the firsthand data they collect with their own built-in sensory devices (especially in dark times), but we should also be ruthlessly self-auditing, consistently chipping away at our belief systems to see how stable they actually are.

When I first became more active on this site, I shared freelance stories based on first-hand experiences or things I’d witnessed over time because I thought that’s what the platform wanted. Eventually I ran out of stories and was faced with a choice: force new ones that felt unnatural, recycle old ones, or pivot to other facets of who I am.

In other words: be a programmed robot or be a complex person.

I chose the second option, and the site suddenly became fun. It also became clear that being uniquely yourself is the only way to stand out on a platform where everyone is copying the same strategies and saying the same things in slightly different ways.

Which brings me to the real question: what’s the point of standing out if no one can see you?

Maybe it’s deciding whether you’d rather be invisible and honest or visible and hollow. Maybe it's deciding you can control the wind.
