There are 2 types of people in this world.

1. The one that brings the snacks.
2. The one that buys them.

I’m a snack bringer.

It’s not about saving money, or even health (though that plays a part).

It’s personal culture.

The homemade spanakopita on the train.
The handbag full of almonds at the school gate.
The homemade birthday cake.
The flask of coffee in the meeting.

It’s just a vibe.
Couldn’t be any other way.

Oh, I’ve also got buttered hot cross buns.

Ps. What are you - 1 or 2? No judging!

I have internalised bias against women.
And this is why.

Recently I was part of putting together a consultant programme and approaching female consultants was not my initial thought.

Why? Male consultants were the first to spring to mind.

Am I ashamed to admit this? Yes.

So why am I sharing? Because I want to show you that we ALL have internal bias, it is a product of our society. Deprogramming it takes effort and purpose.

If I think that way, then I'm pretty sure I'm not the only one (regardless of gender).

By shining a light on this, we can start to assess how we HIRE.

Because women don't just want to be "empowered", "supported", "seen", "championed" anymore.

We want to be hired, paid, and promoted.

Now.
Today.

So this is my message to you:

Stop the lip service.
Start hiring women.

I'm not talking about quotas, or hiring on gender rather than skill.

I'm talking about prioritising female hiring so we don't "forget" to invite women to the table.

Think of women first, trust me, the male hires will come.

How?

- Give your HR & exec staff bias training.
- Write job descriptions in an inclusive way.
- Make your first shortlist female (I dare you).
- Support women on LinkedIn so they get career visibility.
- When a women replaces a man in your company never EVER give her a lesser title.

Actual resources:

- Freelancers: +60 experienced women from sales, marketing, tech & client success at the Women's Travel Freelancer Network.
- Female speakers: incredible bench of talent at the Women in Hospitality Leadership Alliance.

I'm bold enough to admit I need to do better, are you?
