In a pipeline review last quarter, I answered a question I didn’t actually understand — because not answering felt riskier.

I’ve been here.
This took me longer than it should have to notice.
In that moment, I felt exposed, behind, and under pressure to sound decisive.

What was really going on wasn’t a lack of insight.
It was the belief that confidence mattered more than curiosity.
That having an answer was safer than admitting I was still learning.

One small shift I’m practicing:
Before responding, I ask myself, “Am I trying to sound certain, or understand what’s actually happening?”

Because the cost of not changing this is subtle but real.
Teams stop surfacing weak signals.
Decisions get defended instead of examined.
And clarity arrives later than it needs to.

You don’t need to fix your whole culture to notice this.

In a conference room in 2019, I turned down coaching for myself while asking my team to “figure it out” during our toughest quarter.
I told myself it was about timing.
I felt stretched. Exposed. Quietly unsure.
And more stubborn than strategic.

What was really going on wasn’t skepticism about coaching.

I didn’t want a mirror.
I didn’t want someone slowing me down enough to ask the questions I was avoiding.
I wasn’t protecting cash.  I was protecting certainty.

The same thing showed up later when it came to investing in my people.
If they got clearer, I would have to get clearer too.

One small shift that changed everything:
When I hesitate, I ask, “What truth am I trying not to confront right now?”

Because inaction has a cost.
Not just missed results.
But capable people plateauing.
And leaders carrying pressure alone longer than they should.

You don’t need to commit to anything dramatic.
Just stop calling delay a strategy.

I once watched a six-figure deal sit in “final review” for 47 days while my forecast depended on it.

Every Friday I told myself, next week it closes.
