In some Chinese kindergartens, children aren’t rewarded for sitting quietly or memorizing answers.

They are taught to function. 

At five years old, they cook meals, build objects, clean their space, and solve simple real-world problems together.

This isn’t about early productivity.
It’s about building agency. 

Psychologically, confidence doesn’t come from praise or information. It comes from repeated proof that your actions lead to outcomes.

Each completed task leaves behind a quiet but powerful belief:
“I can handle this.”

That belief is called self-efficacy, and it shapes how people approach uncertainty for the rest of their lives.

Children who grow up acting instead of waiting don’t fear mistakes.
They don’t stall when instructions are unclear.

West Baton Rouge Parish Library

In my brief time, I was responsible for weeding both the nonfiction and reference sections, which freed up valuable library space. Also ensured the database services carried the information available in those physical formats. Responsible for organizing and generating a more current and relevant website. Organized and implemented the annual West Baton Rouge Parish Library Art Show. Sought to unify interdepartmental marketing in order to have "one look." Acquired Adult Fiction books.

Accepted the offer to administer at this library in order to seek new challenges other than effective Youth Services Librarianship. Being the lone, small library in a large and populated parish, I eventually understood that the library did not choose to grow in order to best serve the population. I also eventually understood and learned that striving for growth, progress, and having departments work together was a risky undertaking in such a small library.  The Assistant Directorship was an irrelevant, redundant position and I was generally unchallenged.

Straight out of the gate from earning a Master's Degree in Information and Library Science, I accepted this position without much library experience. Responsible for budgets, planning, and coordination of current and future library issues, I added DVDs to the library collection, as well as purchased and installed the proper shelving to store them. Weeded the nonfiction section of out-of-date and unused books. Supervised the maintenance of library grounds. Maintained connectivity issues with computers and administered funding for internet access through the State of Louisiana (E-Rate). Working with the Youth Services Librarian, administered the Summer Reading Program. Worked with parish employees and civic associations to market the library's presence and future. Reported to the Library Board and took minutes of board meetings. Presented budget and monthly reports.

While important work, at the time there was little passion for these responsibilities and I longed to work more with library patrons and gain more front end library experience.

I dig me some indie rock and folk and love classic country, swing, trad & revival folk, the best of rock and roll (like The Beatles and such), and 70's light rock.
