💭Some fortunes are not meant to be sold.

Majid Majidi's 'The Song of Sparrows' isn't merely cinema, it's a mirror held up to the human condition, reflecting back truths we often choose to ignore.

Karim, a humble villager wrestling with the weight of provision, and his young son Hussein, who harbors a simple dream: to transform a muddy cistern into a pond shimmering with goldfish: a modest fortune, a glimmer of hope.

Father and son, each chasing their own vision of salvation.

Until fate intervenes.
The bucket leaks.
It slips.
It shatters.

Golden fish spill across the dusty road, gasping desperately for air, their dreams scattered, literal and metaphorical, across the unforgiving ground. But what happens next transforms a moment of loss into a lesson in grace.

Hussein doesn't scramble to salvage what remains. He doesn't cling desperately to the fragments of his broken dream. Instead, he kneels by the stream and releases the surviving fish into flowing water.

He chooses compassion over possession. His father watches in silence, confronted by a child's wisdom and by the recognition of how far he himself has drifted from what truly matters.

📖4 Lessons from this story: 

1)We mistake complexity for sophistication. Truth: The most enduring success is built on principles simple enough to explain to a child.

2) Loss as revelation:  Some breaks are excavations, removing the superficial to reveal the essential. The shattered bucket might be what blocked your view of the stream.

3) Letting go as Leadership: Sometimes the most powerful thing a leader can do is open their hands. The fish couldn't survive in a bucket, they needed the stream.

4) Wisdom in unlikely places: The child, unburdened by cynicism, sees what we miss. Those with the least to prove often have the most to teach.

The smallest tragedies contain the biggest truths. Greatest success isn't what we gain, but what we remember to value. The goldfish weren't the fortune, the lesson was.

What am I holding onto that needs to swim free? What bucket needs to break so I can finally see the stream?

Because in the end, the song of sparrows isn't about what we accumulate. It's about what we're willing to release. And what we rediscover when we do.

Great leaders use empathy; that starts with understanding what empathy really is. Here's a breakdown with tips:

There are three dimensions of empathy, and each one calls for a different kind of practice:

🧠 Cognitive empathy 
This is about understanding what might be going on for someone else. You can draw on your past experiences and try to see their perspective.
👉 Tip: Ask open questions like “What might they be experiencing right now?” or “How might this decision land from their perspective?”


💓 Emotive empathy
Feeling what someone else feels, and connecting to their emotions. You can notice clues and imagine what might be up.
👉 Tip: Slow down and notice your own body’s response in conversations. Allow yourself to feel with, not just think about.


🤝 Empathic action
This is where you put empathy in motion, taking steps to support someone. Often it's just about being there and listening.
👉 Tip: Follow through with presence. That could mean offering help, checking in later, or simply saying, “I’m here with you.”


Most leaders are good at one or two of these, but putting them all together is what builds trust, engagement, and stronger teams. This applies to sales, customers, staff, investors -- every human part of business will be strengthened by effective empathy.

2. Put trust at the center
Treat your guardrails as sacred, protect your ethics like the future depends on it, because it probably does.

3. Honor the grief of change
Change always includes an ending. AI is shifting what makes us feel valuable, which means identity loss is real.

4. Focus people on people-stuff
AI is bad at empathy, judgment, meaning, and emotional intelligence. Equip people to do the people work.

5. Engage feelings to fuel change
Systems and tech support change, but people and emotions drive it. Optimize for curiosity, openness, and care.

6. Relevance > hype
Give less attention to “what AI can do,” and more to why it matters to your mission.

🟢 Workplaces are affected by the Emotional Recession
"An Emotional Recession is defined as a sustained decline in emotional and relational capacities with measurable consequences for wellbeing and organizational functioning"

🟢  Emotional intelligence is a 10x multiplier 
"individuals with higher EQ scores are more than 10 times as likely to report high outcomes in combined Success Factors when compared with those with low EQ. These findings reinforce that EQ is a strong predictor of outcomes central to organizational functioning."


🟢 Emotional intelligence has declined globally, which diminishes our effectiveness & resilience
"the Emotional Recession describes a parallel erosion in emotional intelligence skills essential for social and organizational health: intrinsic motivation, trust, engagement in quality relationships, and resilience against burnout. 

This contraction of emotional capacity weakens workplace cultures by reducing the energy, empathy, and collaboration resources available. Declines in trust and shared purpose increase the risk of disengagement and turnover."


🟢  loss of purpose and optimism fuels burnout 
"Burnout is evidenced by emotional exhaustion, depersonalization, and a diminished sense of personal accomplishment, which tends to intensify when individuals lack the EQ competencies related to optimism and purpose. 

When emotional skills such as a sense of agency and relational supports (like a strong network) are compromised, burnout appears to worsen, creating a cycle in which diminished emotional resources further fuel exhaustion and disengagement"
