I've seen the worst side of the economy during the depths of the financial crisis at 28 which was when my career in venture began. My worldview and opinions are also fuelled by previous roles in consulting, research and large-cap investments.

I have lived in and experienced different cultures across Singapore, India, Taiwan, Malaysia, and the US over the years.

Ilya Sutskever on GenAI benchmarks or AI Evals ✨

Ilya knows better than most how they are actively gamed - essentially useless and misleading when it comes to real world applications and dealing with the unknown.

It's high time that we moved on from these evals as a way to signal AI model improvement or performance.

I'm not convinced at all that this is done "inadvertently" given the obvious benefits for AI stakeholders - PR, signups, stock price, new funding (to name but a few).

The press and AI evangelists eagerly lap them up as they help facilitate all sorts of ranking tables and pretty charts.

All they do is reflect all the great work that their developers did to optimize for those specific tests and results. 

This helps explain the contrast between their seemingly amazing results on paper and the actual experience that users enjoy.
