The most powerful persuasion “engine” isn’t information. It’s not just a story, either. Instead, it’s something most people never even think of.

In a sales presentation, your job is to moveyour prospectsbetween two points:

1. What is (the current reality)
2. What could be (the future state they want)

In our work at Duarte, we call it the Sparkline.

This is where persuasion happens.

Watch a world-class communicator give a speech or make a presentation, and I bet that you’ll notice a similarity between all of them:

They constantly toggle between the current reality and their vision for a better future.

They don’t just describe a problem. They contrast it with a vision of what’s possible. Then they return to the current reality, and then lift the audience again into a better one.

That back-and-forth movement creates emotional momentum.

Describing “what is” makes an audience feel the weight of their current challenges.

And showing “what could be” helps them imagine a future where those challenges are resolved. 

The contrast creates a natural pull toward change because the present starts to feel too limiting and the future too compelling to ignore.

That’s when the real persuasion happens.

Works with firm client service managers and project managers to manage/implement mega project and other strategic marketing initiatives. Day-to-day work includes management of and hands-on participation in proposals, presentations, pre-sell and business development activities, and conference and event coordination. Regularly works on short-term, critical deadline pursuits; long-term, multi-million dollar, strategic pursuits; and creative projects with engineers, planners and construction staff. Facilitates strategy sessions; guides approach development; storyboards themes and subthemes; develops credible, compliant, compelling, and convincing content; and assists in developing proving graphics.

Senior Marketing Specialist

West Yost Associates

Responsible for guiding firm-wide client-focused marketing efforts for 110-person water engineering firm. Worked with firm principals and engineering managers to manage/implement strategic marketing plan across six offices. Included management of and hands-on participation in proposals, business development and client contact program, conference and event coordination, and design/development of resource materials, marketing collateral website redesign. Worked with engineers on short-term, critical deadline projects and long-term strategic/creative projects. Provided supervision for three marketing staff members. Managed workload for Marketing Department and provided training as needed to marketing staff and other firm staff.

The Hoyt Company (now HDR)

Managed a network of 11 Mac OS 9.2.2 machines plus one Windows XP machine. Designed project newsletters, invitations, fact sheets, maps and other requested graphic products. Coordinated print vendors. Performed quality control on every document created in the office (i.e., postcards, newsletters, air quality plans, transportation plans, correspondence, etc.). Supervised three to four administrative staff. Served as the point of contact for property management. Assisted Project Managers with writing and researching newsletters and websites.

My passion and expertise includes working with teams to win multi-million- and billion-dollar design and construction projects, developing opportunities for brand impact for individuals and organizations, and finding ways to foster employee engagement and belonging.

As a strategic marketing and communications professional, I have been involved in more than 800 pursuit efforts and multiple market sectors, including higher education, civic, theme park entertainment, aviation, data centers, seismic/historic renovations, sports, hospitality, laboratories, residential, office, and retail.

As a 24-year AEC industry veteran, I have been a dedicated member of the Society for Marketing Professional Services (SMPS) for the past 19-years. During my member tenure, I have held chapter and Society-level leadership positions, including service as the SMPS/LA chapter president and Society’s Certification Committee Chair. I am generous with my knowledge and regularly present on strategy development, leadership growth and best practices for chapters throughout the U.S. and Canada, as well as other industry organizations including ENR, NAWIC and the ACE Mentoring Program of America.
