Neither my husband nor myself have a farming background, we didn’t grow up around livestock and we both had very small vegetable gardens as kids.

We wanted to get involved in small-scale farming because we believe that big agriculture is not sustainable.

I first learned about permaculture design when I started planting trees in my suburban backyard outside Dallas, Texas and they kept dying.

I learned more about the interconnected world of soil life. I got to appreciate how important water flow is, and how planting more than one thing together can help the whole do better.

After successfully planting some fruit trees, I wanted to bring animals into the picture to help increase our fertility and add diversity. 

So we made the plunge and bought a 17-acre farm. We kept a few of the original horses as boarders, and we’re grateful because we learned so much about farm life from these longtime horse owners who have seen it all.

After moving we jumped in with both feet and welcomed chickens, geese, ducks, and dairy sheep to our farm. Not to mention a few barn cats, and all of the amazing birds, butterflies, and bees.

We’ve been called “software nerds who pick up sheep turds” and that feels like a great way to put it.

The farm is an ever-evolving project, where we continue to plant more trees, and practice rotational grazing in an effort to regenerate the land and sequester carbon.

-Wrote unmarshalling code to take XML and dynamically create columns and rows in a grid and display SOAP response data to traders.

-Incoporated my modules into the existing pricing form to recalculate prices based on the changing data retrieved from the feeds.

-Became the sole developer for the C#-based test automation project (both build and test managers), implementing over 30 new features while increasing the level of stability and performance of the program.

-Leveraged C/C++ and OpenGL to create visual test cases to verify a safety critical Aerospace graphics driver.

-Traced through the graphics driver code and helped driver developers to pinpoint bugs, while acquiring a deeper understanding of graphics and low level programming.

-Developed keen interpersonal skills by working with QA for the automation program, while catering to the needs of users and keeping the MySQL back-end and the GUI front-end well organized.

-Researched and proposed a new database system and implemented the database layer changes with a co-worker.

-Reimplemented two modules of the Voice Recognition program, performed developer tests, created a personal schedule for time management while meeting release deadlines.

I’m a trainer who, like many, was forced to move online in the Spring of 2020.

When everything went virtual, my next workshop was a half-day team training. The first thought to go through my head was, “How can I make this session feel like anything but a 3-hr Zoom call?!”

So I got to work.
Learning everything I could about online presenting.

And then something interesting happened.

After every virtual session, participants asked me how I ran the workshop more than about the actual workshop itself.

Ever since, I’ve been teaching others how to create more professional, engaging, and seamless online live presentations.

Because the status quo right now?
It's bad.

Most people still dread getting on 'another' virtual call. 
But it doesn't have to be that way. 

And getting better is not as complicated as you think.

I started to notice a pattern yesterday.

Almost every person who spoke to me after my conference session shared a similar reflection.

I had just shared the Momentum Formula with a room full of learning and development professionals, explaining the difference between logical, biological, and psychological roadblocks.

The one that stood out?  
🧠 Biological

People shared their quiet struggles to initiate tasks that were important but not urgent. Or how they will follow-through when there’s external accountability but regularly put-off work without it.

The same personal challenges I shared during my talk.

For years I desperately wished I were more like my coworkers who didn’t show any signs of struggle like I did. I had no idea why some days work would flow out of me with ease while so many other days, it felt like a battle to get started (a battle I often lost).

It was only when I started to understand how our brains are wired differently that I was kinder to myself. Instead of beating myself up on days when I could not seem to get started, I started to find ways to work with my brain.

It has meant staying curious about how I work, what motivates me, and what I respond well to (and what I don’t). It’s about continual experimentation and paying attention to what suits me.

Most importantly, it has been embracing acceptance. Letting go of the fight to be more like someone else. To catch myself when I’m pulled into comparison and envy.

And to remember everyone has invisible struggles we can’t see, even the people who appear to “have it all together”.

A year ago, I was about to make an unnecessary mistake.

One I wouldn’t have noticed had I not said yes to an invitation from my friend Blake.

When he asked if I wanted to attend his annual Thank U Live event for entrepreneurs to look back on the past year, I said yes (but for the wrong reasons).

After some difficult challenges in 2024, I genuinely wanted an opportunity to say ‘good riddance’ and slam the door shut on the year so I could focus forward.

So as the evening event unfolded, I was surprised as I started to see the past 12 months in a completely different light. Within just a couple of hours, everything shifted. My mood, my energy, and my mindset about what 2024 actually meant to me.

I was so ready to put it all behind me, I was unknowingly ready to toss out the good with the bad.

So now as 2025 winds down (a year that said, “Hey 2024. Hold my beer!”), I’m going to Thank U Live with an open mind and no assumptions about what I’ll uncover.

What I do know is that this small, in-person event had an outsized impact on me last year. If you are an entrepreneur in the GTA/Halton/Tri-Cities area who wants to pause, reflect, and focus on gratitude, I encourage you to consider attending, too.

I recognized the words as soon as she said them.

“I just want to start fresh with a brand new system.”

She felt overwhelmed trying to stay on top of her projects and wanted to do something to ‘fix’ it. So she did what most people do: focus on fixing the system.

— switching to a new software
— downloading a template

These approaches can help… if your system has real gaps. If you’re experiencing a logical roadblock.

But what if the problem isn’t a logical one? What if there’s very little wrong with your current system?

Most traditional productivity advice focuses on tools, techniques, and templates but doesn’t address biological and psychological roadblocks.

Since there's more than one type of roadblock, there’s more than one way to approach your productivity system if it’s not working for you (yet).

Yesterday I ran a webinar about why we struggle to follow-through on tasks. 

It got a bit meta for a moment when I pointed out how we often leave a webinar with new ideas and good intentions, but then don't follow-through. 

I know for me, the best thing I can do to turn intentions into action is using external accountability. 

— public declarations
— accountability partners/groups
— joining programs/cohorts

It's also why I'm hosting a program this December called Momentum Jumpstart to help people build a personalized productivity system based on how they naturally work. 

This 3-week program accounts for the different reasons you can struggle to follow-through on important work: logical, biological, and psychological.
