What do you like? What don't you like? Which would get you to pick it up off the shelf?

Ghostwriter. Exploring the art and science of storytelling. Debut fantasy novel this fall. Building something new.

A few years ago, I went to a $15 open mic in Austin. First comedy show I’d seen.

Dude gets on stage. The crowd goes nuts. It’s Shane Gillis, one of the most popular comedians in the world.

He pulls out a notebook and a pen, grabs the mic, and starts telling jokes.

When the crowd gives one of those loud, genuine laughs, he jots down a note. When the crowd looks at each other, confused, he jots down a note. When the crowd stares at him, expecting more, he jots down a note.

You get the idea. He’s testing jokes. Making a note of what’s connecting and, even more importantly, what’s not.

Then, I imagine, he cuts or changes the parts that don’t connect. Tests them again another night. And repeats the process until the joke, his story, is tight and compelling throughout.

He made me realize:

This is how you can treat Storytelling, too.

Your story is flexible. You can constantly test, get feedback, improve, repeat. Like Shane, what you’re looking for is moments of connection:

- Your boss starts nodding along.
- Someone leans forward in their chair.
- Your beta reader leaves a great comment.
- There’s a spark of interest in your partner’s eye.

You get the idea. You’re searching for that visceral reaction in your audience. When you see it, you double down.

Stories are iterative.

I've created 2 new landing pages over the last 6 months. One converts horribly while the other converts incredibly well. Some weird stats:

- The horrible converting one is priced at $99.
- The incredibly well converting one is priced at $499.

The obvious answer is an audience mismatch -- people expect story related stuff from me, not 'grow your writing business.'

Sure that matters but let's be real not a <1% to 18%+ jump.

So what's the difference?

Very simply -- I ran the second LP through 🇺🇦 Eddie Shleyner's entire Transformational Landing Pages training... and haven't put that effort into the first.

One idea that -- in my opinion -- made the biggest difference:

Fascinations

Eddie says a fascination is "any sentence designed to conjure intense curiosity and compel action, in that order."

Capture the attention, then direct it.

In fact, I valued this upbringing so much that my wife and I still live on our family farm - which has been a part of my family’s original lineage dating back to our coming to the area in 1797.

Early on I learned that success - in business and in life - was not entirely based on making money and financial achievements, but the result of establishing long-term mutually beneficial relationships with great clients and friends, developing and maintaining a good name and reputation, building a firm foundational character, having and appreciating a loving family, and benefitting from the unending help of a supportive life partner.

After a long and extremely satisfying career, I now enjoy working with very select group of individuals and companies interested in benefitting from my experience and knowledge. Uncomfortable truth of the week. The British ended slavery via Christianity in 1807.

As humans we need to get past melanin count and understand there’s good and bad everywhere in the world.

Perhaps once we reach that conclusion, a mass awakening will happen. 

Christianity once again being the driving force for good in the world and the main take away here.

We need to get back to Christian morality if we’re to save the west from what we’re all seeing daily.

One second of eye contact.
That’s all it took for a three-hour conversation to unfold at 36,000 feet.

I never said what I do for a living. It didn’t seem to matter.

He told me about his wildly successful career;
multiple medical practices, loyal staff, a life many would envy.

He makes a lot of money.
He gives extravagant gifts because he can.
He surrounds himself with beauty.
And yet… three marriages resulting in divorce.
Adult children who can’t quite find their footing.
A loneliness he couldn't fully name.

“I don’t know why I shared all that with you,” he said.
“You just have that face people tell things to.”

I smiled. I’ve heard that before.
And if I’m honest, I don’t always want that face.

Later that day it happened again;
a dentist and his wife, sharing their midlife reinvention, their move,
their search for belonging. How success and starting over can feel exhilarating and exhausting at once.

Two conversations. Complete strangers, a pattern I know by heart.

No matter where I go- planes, cafés, park benches,
people bypass small talk and go straight to the soul.
Because people are aching to be seen.
To speak their truth without someone rushing in to fix, judge, or optimize it. 
To feel, even for a moment, that who they are—as they are—is enough. 

And sometimes, heartbreakingly, it feels safer to be honest with a stranger
than with the people who say they love us.
For that hour, the armor comes off.
They can simply be a person with a story.

I used to wonder why this keeps happening, now I think it’s that this is what my soul was contracted for.
Not to seek connection, but to make room for it.
To hold the stories rarely spoken aloud:
the loneliness behind achievement,
the uncertainty beneath competence,
the human beneath the mask.

You might wonder what any of this has to do with coaching mid-career physicians.

My answer:  Everything.

Because the person on the plane is not that different from the person in the white coat.
We can lose our essence inside the life we worked so hard to build.
We can become consumed by duty and expectation,
until the “self” feels like a distant relative.

So here's the reminder, for all of us:
You are not the only one who at times can feel lonely in a full house.
You are not the only one who has “everything” and still feels that occasional stirring of emptiness. You are not the only one who wonders, quietly,
“Is this really it?”

That’s where the work begins... with one honest conversation.

You don’t need perfect advice.
You don’t need a script.
You just have to listen.
Stay a little longer.
Really see the person in front of you~
not for what they’ve achieved,
but for what they’re holding together.

Sometimes the deepest healing begins at a café table
 or 36,000 feet in the air ~
 where someone finally feels safe enough
 to be real. 💙

Minutes are pieces of a life.
Look who's handing you theirs.

This Thanksgiving, I am thinking about gratitude
 in a different way.

"Appreciate those who give you their time.
 It is not just time.
 It is a piece of their life."

Not the meetings.
Not the quick calls.
The real moments.

To my mentor, who pushed me to write a keynote
I did not believe I had it in me.
Then spent hours revising it
until it became more than either of us imagined.

To the coach who taught me martial arts at dawn,
sending 6 am messages,
 walking me through each step
 like it was the middle of the day.

To the friend who stayed close after surgery,
 awake through hard nights,
 steady through painful setbacks.

When someone gives you their time,
they choose you over every other 
demand on their attention.

They give you a piece of life
they'll never see again.

They weren't just giving hours.
They were giving their heartbeats 
they'll never get back.

We thank people for gifts.
For opportunities.
For kindness.

But do we really see
the magnitude of their time?

In a world chasing "more,"
one truth is unchanging:

Time is the only currency
that doesn't return.

You can make more money.
Find new chances.
Meet new people.

But those long afternoons
someone spent teaching you.

Those early mornings
they chose you over rest,
are pieces of a finite life.

They decided you were worth it.

So this Thanksgiving, my gratitude is simple.

Not just for what people gave me,
but for who they chose to be
in my presence.

For the parts of their journey
they allowed me to witness.

For the moments they could have been
anywhere else, with anyone else,
and still chose here.

Your presence is your rarest gift.
Where you place it matters.
Who receives it matters even more.

Look around your table this week,
virtual or physical.

These are not only people sharing a meal.
They're sharing their existence.

That's not just time.
It's love.

Who deserves your gratitude?
