WOW WOW WOW. 

It’s a later post then usual, but I have to say I’ve been recovering most of today and absorbing what just happened yesterday.

I had the honour of speaking at my good friend Christine Gritmon’s EXCELLENT Higher Voltage alongside 👑🐝 Dani Wallace 👑🐝, Teresa Heath-Wareing, Sophie Jane Lee, Hannah Spence and Janine Coombes.

And it was so lovely to see my client, Melitta Campbell - Value Whisperer 💎 who was one of the sponsors and promoting her new book. 

And then, onto The NotWorkers karaoke networking with some of the speakers, audience and other friends old and new. 

It was a long day! So apologies if I don’t tag everybody who came to the event and supported us, and who came to sing afterwards but I’ll give it a try in comments!

For now, I’m just super grateful for, and proud of Christine - you are a natural event producer my love. And this is the best event I’ve ever been to and spoken at in terms of every attention to detail, from the brand (of course, created by moi!) to the venue, how you treated your speakers (swanky hotel, delicious dinner the night before, paying us well, and making sure everybody was well fed and watered throughout). Special thanks to Paul Ince a.k.a. BizPaul and Imran who looked after us.

It may surprise you, but I was terrified of visibility until recently.

This was my passport photo when we came to England from Mauritius.
I was nearly two.

By the time I started school, I knew I looked different to my friends.

I stood out, when all I wanted was to blend in.

As I grew up, I wanted to look like them.
Pale skin. Blonde hair. Freckles.
Chatting about fake tan and Sun-In.

No one looked like me in Jackie magazine.

My dad said I’d have to work twice as hard here to have half a chance 
(He wasn’t even thinking about my gender.)

So of course I was a good girl.
Kept my head down.
Worked hard.
Kept quiet. 
(Aren't we told as kids? Nobody likes a show off!)

And those more visible and vocal reaped the rewards.

I spent years in media, building global brands
While completely neglecting my own.

When I started my business in 2016, I still hoped that my wonderful work would speak for itself.

PAH! Turns out that’s a RUBBISH business strategy!

I'd always wanted to be an author. 

What I didn’t need was the attention that came with it.
The judgement.
The opinions.

I remember sobbing on the phone to my publisher one evening, terrified to put my name on the cover.

Just in case it failed. 

Or succeeded.

I’d even decided on a 'nom de plume'. A white man’s name!

Thankfully, my brilliant publisher Lucy McCarraher MBE talked me out of it.

'Let’s Get Visible!' (the irony!) came out 5 years ago this month and went to #1 in four categories. 

It then won a Business Book Award!

Suddenly I was being invited to speak on panels. Stages. Podcasts.
Quoted in other people’s books. Featured in magazines. Winning awards.

Despite my best efforts...I’d got visible!

But woah - here's what i learned. 

That standing out.
Being different.
Being truly seen…

It ain't all that bad. 

In fact it's pretty cool!

Because visibility is how you make a bigger impact.

How your work gains meaning.

How you change more lives.

I’d always helped brands get visible. 
But then founders started asking me to help them too.

So now I grow your business AND personal brands using my six-step, award-winning VISION Process®.

Because confidence isn’t about being the loudest in the room (or looking a certain way - I wish younger me had known that all along).

Do you share your “why” enough?

Still buzzing from speaking at Christine Gritmon’s Higher Voltage on Thursday and then more incredible karaoke networking with The NotWorkers.

My energy reserves may have crashed after 16 hours of non-stop peopling, but my heart was full.

At my talk, I shared my visibility story and my why and people connected deeply. I’ve had so many lovely messages since. Thank you.

I realise I need to share this story more too. 

I started The NotWorkers in May ‘25 because I wanted to start feeling happy again. 

My dad had died December ‘23 and, just coming off the back of a cancer journey, house move and renovation, just as I was about to get back to work - well, devastated doesn’t cover it. 

Grief clung to me hard and made every attempt to get my business going so much heavier. 

I felt so deeply sad, and could see no way out.

I have always tried to search for light in the darkness but this time I couldn’t.

I have a wonderful husband, two beautiful healthy boys, a gorgeous home (the bit we’ve renovated anyway 🤣) and my mum is still with us, lovely friends - I was grateful for all of it - and yet so incredibly sad all the time.

I wanted to feel happy again. Not just “pasting a smile on it” and getting on. Truly so.

I worked with wise coach friends (Paul Wilson, Kate Porter) and one of my tasks was mind-mapping what makes me happy. 

Dogs, family, DIY, painting, art, design, music, good times with friends… and singing all featured.

Singing had been part of my cancer recovery journey (I worked with a singing coach after the doctor told me to stop work and take up a hobby! I didn’t fancy a choir - I have way too much lead singer energy for that 🤣). And then when I was ‘better’, I put my toys away.

A couple of nights out with The HoLT which featured karaoke (btw it’s how Christine and I met!) and it struck me how happy and light I felt, floating home full of joy each time. 

A crazy idea started to form. How could I build more karaoke into my life (and as a business expense 🤣?!).

I chatted to Lea 🌈 Turner and she said to go for it.

 And so karaoke networking was born.

We’ve only run 5 nights since May but now Sophie Carne 🌻 has joined me to add other playful events (although karaoke will always be core).

In June, someone told me that National Karaoke Day is July 19. 

My dad’s birthday. 

I honestly feel like dad guided me to this to help make me - and other people - happy. 

He was an amazing host, and loved making people feel welcome and valued. As do I.

I help founders with their visibility and messaging, because I know that all people want is to be seen and heard.

At my karaoke nights, every single guest feels seen and heard. 

I think that’s why it works. And why the connections formed are so much deeper.
