This viral "PRO TIP" for unlocking 1M context in Claude Code is WRONG:

I followed it. It broke my web search, subagents, and internal tools.

Here's what actually works — took me an hour of debugging to figure out: The env var approach everyone is sharing

(ANTHROPIC_DEFAULT_SONNET_MODEL: claude-sonnet-4-6-1m) does NOT exist as a model ID.

Those env vars are for third-party deployments like Bedrock and Vertex AI. Not for this. THE CORRECT WAY IS ONE LINE IN

~/.claude/settings.json: "model": "sonnet[1m]"
That's it. Or if you don't want to touch the file:
- Run /model sonnet[1m] inside a session
Or launch with claude --model sonnet[1m]

Once I did it right, here's what I saw:
"claude-sonnet-4-6[1m] · 75k/1,000k tokens (7%) Free space: 892k"

One complete project flow. No auto-compaction. No resets. The whole thing — start to finish — in one session. Is it expensive past 200K tokens?

Yes. Long-context pricing kicks in.

On the $200 plan you'll need "extra usage" enabled.

Worth it? For the right project — absolutely.
