Make eye contact with the camera.
Use gestures intentionally for emphasis.
Frame yourself at eye-level to convey confidence.

→ In person or on stage:

Keep your feet shoulder-width apart to project stability.
Move purposefully to keep your audience engaged.
Use open gestures to convey your authority.

June 2022: I got accepted to speak at TEDx.

But it made me feel like an imposter.

I kept thinking:

“They’ve made a mistake.”
“I don’t belong on that stage.”
”What the heck did I get myself into?”

But I said yes anyway.
Now that talk has opened doors I couldn’t have dreamed of.

But none of that would’ve happened if I had said no.

This year can pass quietly.

Or it can be the year you act big even if you’re scared.

Women are judged before they even speak.

(How I deal with this as a brown woman)

Men are (usually) heard.
Women are (usually) evaluated.

Too much makeup.
Too little makeup.
Too covered up.
Too revealing.
Too much.

So advice like
“Just be confident”
falls flat.

Here’s what actually helps.

Don’t try to be liked.
Aim to be clear.

Say your point early.
State it once.
Then pause.

No more over-explaining.
No more “softening” your tone.
Just calmness, conciseness, clarity.  

And then watch all the judgement fall away.

Stop using exploitative language in job ads!

“Going the extra mile", "working non-typical hours":

These are thinly veiled words to give the company an excuse to exploit people.

- When it says: “go the extra mile”
It actually means: “work beyond your scope”.

- When it says: “work non-typical hours”
It actually means: “work overtime without complains”.

I’m coaching a client to speak well in interviews -
And this language immediately stood out.

Language reflects culture.

When the job ad sounds exploitative,
That’s what the actual job will be too.

If you want to fix your culture, prevent toxicity and retain people for longer -

Use words that respect employees, not exploit them.

PS - ever come across job ads like these?

I created LinkedIn’s first course on AI and public speaking.

But here’s where you should not use AI:

Look, I love AI.

But this MIT study shows that relying on AI:

→ Decreases your brain connectivity.
→ Weakens your memory.
→ Makes you less creative.

This doesn’t mean that we shouldn’t use AI.

But use it to enhance your creativity.

Not outsource it.

Here’s my take as a public speaking coach:

→ Always come up with the key ideas yourself.
→ Use AI to critique and build on your ideas.
→ AI becomes your co-creator, not your ghostwriter.

You bring the personality, ideas, stories.

AI enhances and packages it.

Win-win.
