5 mistakes killing your LinkedIn lead generation

(Fix these or stay stuck at zero leads):

I've written for 30+ coaches over the past 4 years.

Published 15,000+ posts. Generated millions of impressions.

And I've seen the same 5 mistakes destroy lead generation over and over:

1) Inconsistent Posting

You post 3 times one week. Ghost for 10 days. Post twice. Disappear again.

You will be punished if you do that (& not in the you way you like to be punished btw.)

If you do that, your audience forgets you exist.

The fix is pretty simple.

Pick a schedule you can actually maintain.

3x/week beats daily if daily means you'll burn out in 2 weeks.

2) No Case Studies

This is the most damaging mistake on this list.

Without proof, you're just another person making claims.

The fix:

Turn yourself into a case study or work for free until you have 2-3 solid results.

One of my clients was skeptical about posting a case study that required vulnerability.

He almost didn't want to publish it.

That post generated 40 leads.

Case studies are literally the difference between scrollers and sales calls.

3) Talking to the Wrong Audience

You're a high-ticket coach writing content for broke beginners.

Sure, they will engage, and you'll get that little squirt of dopamine too.

But at the end of the day, nobody books any calls with you.

The fix:

ONLY write for your ideal clients, even if it means less likes and impressions.

4) No Clear CTA

Your post gets 100 likes.

You also get a crap ton of comments. But zero DMs. Zero calls booked.

Why?

It's because people don't know what to do next.

The fix:

End every post with one specific action. Comment this. DM me that. Book here.

5) Posting Without a Clear Offer

"I help people grow" means nothing.

(Unless you're writing on onlyfans)

The fix: Spell out exactly what you do, who it's for, and what results they get.

Make it so clear a 12-year-old could explain your offer.

Example:

"I ghostwrite 20 LinkedIn posts monthly for coaches making $10k+. One 90-minute call. Zero writing from you."

5 Mistakes Killing Your Lead Gen:

I just became a LinkedIn expert in 48 hours.

Here's how:

1/ Watched 3 YouTube videos titled "LinkedIn Algorithm Secrets." All by guys whose profile photos were taken in rented cars.

2/ Changed my headline to "Helping leaders scale | Growth mindset." I don't know what that means. Nobody does. That's the point.

3/ Commented "This resonates 🙌" on 50 posts I didn't read. One of them was about someone's dead dog. Still resonated apparently.

4/ Added "LinkedIn Expert" to my bio. Yesterday I was a "Digital Marketing Strategist." Before that, "Passionate About People." I am multitalented.

5/ Started a newsletter called "The Weekly Insight" with 0 subscribers. My mom said she'd subscribe but she doesn't know what a newsletter is so I'm counting her as a maybe.

6/ Posted a carousel with stock photos of people pointing at whiteboards. Slide 7 just said "Mindset is everything." Got 4 likes. All from other LinkedIn experts.

Total investment: $0 and two evenings I'll never get back.

How I run my ghostwriting biz with a 7-month-old.

8am - wake up with my daughter (no choice lol)
8.15am - read Tintin or Harry Potter to her + playtime
11am - she naps. I get some client work done
11.30am to 2pm - client content, LinkedIn engagement, send connection requests
2pm - she's up. Laptop goes away
4pm - second nap. This is my main work block
4.15pm to 6pm - client work + connection requests + send DMs
6pm - laptop closed
10pm - she's finally asleep. Laptop back up for an hour or two

Not exactly the productivity porn you see on here haha

But this exact routine helped me hit my highest revenue month ($8k+)

• No fancy routine
• No 5am miracle morning
• No checking my phone every 5 minutes

The thing that actually moves the needle:

Sending 25+ connection requests and DMs every single day.

That's it.

I use Cold Turkey, Opal, and Unpluq to block everything else out.

When I'm working, I'm 100% working.

When I'm with my daughter, I'm 100% with her.

No half-assing either one.

It's not sexy.

But it keeps clients coming in while I get to be present for every giggle and milestone.

And tbh, that's all I really care about.

Unpopular opinion:

Reading just marketing/copywriting books won't make you a better writer.

Fiction will.

I write for a living. I ghostwrite LinkedIn content for founders and coaches.

And the single best thing I've done to improve my writing wasn't a course. Wasn't a template.

Wasn't a framework.

It was reading novels.

Here's what fiction gives you that non-fiction doesn't:

1) Understanding a good story structure

You don't analyze a great novel.

You experience it.

And that experience rewires how you write.

Your posts start flowing instead of feeling forced.

2) Emotional vocabulary

Marketing teaches you "pain points."

Fiction teaches you what pain actually sounds like when someone describes it.

Big difference.

3) The ability to hold attention

A 300-page novel keeps you reading for hours.

A marketing book?

You skim it.

Fiction trains you to write stuff people actually want to finish.

4) Pattern recognition

After enough fiction, you start noticing what makes a scene work.

What makes dialogue land. What makes an ending hit.

Those patterns show up in everything you write after.

5) A "human-sounding" voice

The more fiction you read, the more your writing sounds like a person talking.

Not a marketer selling.

And that's the whole game on LinkedIn.

TL;DR:

Read more fiction.

Your copy will thank you.

I've been posting on LinkedIn for the past 1.5 years.
1200 posts published.
1.3M impressions generated.

Few misconceptions about LinkedIn that are holding you back:

1/ You don't need to post every day. 

I'm a huge proponent of daily posting. But I've seen people crush it with 3-5 posts per week. Three great posts per week beat seven mediocre ones. Quality wins.

2/ Viral posts don't build audiences. 

They bring tourists, not followers. Real growth comes from showing up with valuable insights week after week and merging them with your stories and personality.

3/ Commenting isn't networking. 

Dropping "Great post" on 50 posts daily is spam. Real engagement means adding value to conversations. For every post you comment on, ask yourself "What does this idea mean to me?" and share that thought.

4/ You can't hack the algorithm. 

There's no secret formula. The algorithm rewards posts that keep people on the platform. Write stuff people actually want to read. That's it.

And the truth about all of this is LinkedIn growth isn't one size fits all. 

What works for me won't work for everyone. 

My best advice would be to:

Get started, find your groove, and stick to what works for you.

It's slower than you think. More valuable than you expect. And simpler than the gurus make it sound.

Over the past 18 months, I've written a letter to my wife each month.

It wasn't some New Year's resolution or romantic grand plan.

It's not scheduled. 

I don't light a candle and put on piano music. 

Sometimes I write it while eating cold toast at 11am like a person who's given up on meals as a concept.

Sometimes it's at midnight when my brain won't shut up and I need somewhere to put all the thoughts before they rot in there.

Some months, it's full of big feelings and real things I've been meaning to say.

Other months, it's me writing:

"I know I've been weird lately. But I still notice the way you crinkle your nose when you're annoyed and I love it more than I'll ever be able to explain in a letter I'm writing next to a sink full of dishes."

There's no formula.

Sometimes it's awkward. 

Sometimes it's emotional. 

Sometimes I read it back and think "this is genuinely embarrassing" and then I send it anyway because what am I gonna do, edit a love letter? 

That's worse.

The thing is...

You should never miss a chance to tell someone you love them. 

Not because life is short. 

Life is actually pretty long. 

That's the problem. It's long enough to forget to say the important stuff.

And this is my way of not forgetting.

Every time I write one, I get this stupid little reminder that life is happening. 

Not in the big moments. 

In the tiny, boring, easy-to-miss ones that I'd walk right past if I wasn't forcing myself to write them down.

So no. I don't do this for content. 

Or because I think I'm some wise married man with answers. 

I'm a guy who eats cold toast and writes sentimental letters at midnight. 

But the world moves too fast. 

And I don't want to look up one day and realize I forgot to say the most important stuff to the most important person.

Anyway. That's it.

Just a habit I'm grateful I accidentally started.

Might turn this into next month's letter. Might not.

But she'll probably read this post before I decide.

And I kind of love that.

Claude Opus 4.6 just killed my entire business in 9 seconds.

I run a LinkedIn ghostwriting business.

• ... which led to a podcast appearance which airs next week.

The content mix that worked throughout:

We mixed two types of content:

1. Personality posts (off the clock, human stuff, hot takes)
2. Actionable posts (frameworks, steps, how they actually work)

The personality posts got attention. 

The actionable posts built trust.

If you want to get access to infinite opportunities (leads, thought leadership, podcast invites etc), you need a healthy balance of both.

Personality without proof = entertaining but forgettable.

Proof without personality = credible but boring.

What they didn't do:

• No commenting 69x per day
• No paid ads
• No AI spam in comments

Just good content that showed how they think and work.

You don't need a massive following or growth hacks.

Nobody talks like that at lunch.

So don’t write like that online.

You see, adding complexity = trying to sound smart.

Trying to sound smart = sounding like you don’t know what you’re talking about.

If you actually do know your stuff, you won’t need jargon to explain that. 

You need simplicity.

• Say what you mean in one sentence
• Use examples your reader actually relates to
• Cut every word you wouldn’t say out loud
