my Pastor at church asked me 2 weeks ago for an update after he saw my prayer request. I mentioned I was trying to see a specialist, and that I was scheduled for January.

he asked if it was a certain neuro opthamologist and I said YES. He knew him.

he sent a text and I saw him the next day and discovered that my problems were likely not lymes but rather the spine leak.

tomorrow I go in for a blood patch at 6am.

Alongside three other dads and their sons, we celebrated the transition from boyhood to manhood.

Inspired by The Intentional Father by Jon Tyson,
we built a full day of adventure, challenge, and blessing.

→ Hearty breakfast with the dads
→ Time at the gun range
→ All-out paintball battle
→ Knighting ceremony at an overlook in St. Paul
→ And a feast at Fogo de Chão to finish the day

Each dad stood before his son, sword in hand,
and publicly declared,

“You are now entering a new season and chapter, may you trust in the Lord 
With all of your heart, all of your strength and all of your soul”

Now is the time for more young men and women to rise up
→ the journey is just beginning
→ the real work of shaping, praying for and guiding
→ the input from peers, and wise grandparents

But we need more:

More intentionality.
More fathers speaking life.
More moments that mark the shift from child to adult.

Let’s raise sons who know who they are
and daughters who know what kind of man to look for.

This book was a catalyst but the vision was inside.

As the director of clinical business operations at Texas Children's Cancer Center, I serve as the bridge between hospital administration and clinical faculty to ensure accurate billing and documentation, appropriate staffing based on patient volumes, identifying new opportunities for expansion of services, and education of faculty on the business side of medicine. I developed an innovative dashboard for accurate real time tracking of patient volumes, gross charges, distribution of billing codes and RVU at the provider, care setting and cost center level.

Established a new program for the care of children with rare tumors at Texas Children’s Hospital. This is the largest rare tumors program in United States treating approximately 70 new patients per year. The program provides free consultation service to physicians around the world. As part of the program, I established a rare tumors tele tumor board which takes place online once a month. In the two years since inception, 61 cases from 39 institutions and from 32 different cities were presented and discussed in this tumor board. I established multiple national registries for rare tumors. This program is now recognized as a premier program for children with rare tumors in North America.

The program includes liver tumors program, bone tumors program, neuroblastoma program, rare tumors program, thyroid cancer program, and soft tissue sarcoma program. Program members include 16 physicians, 2 nurse practitioners, 3 nurse coordinators, and 2 social workers. As the leader of this program, I am responsible for quality of clinical care, faculty development, setting research priorities, developing practice guidelines, developing internal and external collaborations and development of new programs.

Hematology Oncology section is one of the largest within the Department of Pediatrics with approximately 180 faculty and 1000 staff members who serve at four Texas Children’s sites including the Medical Center, the West Campus, the Woodlands, and the Vannie E. Cook Clinic in McAllen .  In this role, I was responsible for overseeing the day-to-day clinical operations of the center, which includes partnering with nursing and administrative leaders. I was responsible for effort allocation and scheduling of 150 clinical faculty. In addition, I worked with the Division Head in recruiting clinical faculty, financial planning, and strategic planning. Eight associate directors reported to me in this role. I led COVID19 related changes in patient care, physician safety, telemedicine and strategic planning.

Established a new program for children with thyroid cancers at Texas Children’s Hospital. This multidisciplinary program brought together endocrinologists, oncologists, ENT surgeons, pediatric surgeons, nuclear medicine physicians and pathologists under one program to provide state of the art care for children with rare tumors. Organized the first national conference focusing on thyroid cancer in children in October 2018. Mentored junior faculty Dr. Mahajan who took over as the director of the program in January 2020. Currently, working to design the first national clinical trial for children with thyroid cancer through Children’s Oncology Group.

The Children's Oncology Group, a clinical trials group supported by the National Cancer Institute, is the world's largest organization devoted exclusively to pediatric cancer research. Soft tissue sarcoma committee is responsible for the design and conduct of clinical trials for children with rhabdomyosarcoma, synovial sarcoma, desmoid tumor and other soft tissue sarcomas. As the leader of the soft tissue sarcoma committee, I am responsible for setting the research priorities for the committee. I lead a team of 50 clinicians from various disciplines including pediatric oncology, pediatric surgery, radiation oncology, pathology, basic science and radiology.
