Hey!

I’m a London-based entrepreneur, angel investor, podcaster, startup mentor and public speaker, whose speciality lies in talking no-nonsense founder/investor advice and help. I'm currently co-founder of new B2B sales tool, trumpet, host of Pitch Deck podcast and co-founder of an angel investing venture-arm, Horseplay Ventures

I previously co-founded DesignMyNight, back in 2010 and managed to grow that over 7 years with minimal angel funding, to 100+ employees, 15,000 SaaS customers and 8m monthly uniques on the website. We exited to Access Group in 2017.

I live for the early stages of startups - building the brand, finding product market fit, iterating quickly and building out a team. Most of my content is centred around this, as well as tips from an angel investor. Even after exiting to financial freedom, I caught the founder bug again and have co-founded my next startup, trumpet, in 2022; looking to disrupt B2B sales and kill the sales pdf deck. When we hit $1M ARR at both my startups, I thought we’d made it. 
I was wrong.

That milestone didn’t feel like success, it actually felt like survival.
Everyone told us $1M was “product-market fit.”

But all I saw behind the scenes was a brittle system held together by caffeine and duct tape!

Our pricing didn’t match value.

The truth?

I speak to 100s of founders and "growth" is what they say they are searching. Few admit they’re addicted to motion instead.

In our early GTM days, I kept mistaking speed for progress.

We were testing every channel, hiring faster than our process could handle, rewriting the strategy too regularly.

You don’t realise how much this stuff compounds until you’re a few years in and think “Why didn’t I start this earlier?” so here are the 10 habits I wish I’d built from day one working in sales: 

1) Keep a Closed-Won list in Sales Nav
A simple list of every customer I’ve ever closed.
Re-engaging warm relationships shouldn’t rely on memory.

2) Track every champion I’ve ever worked with
Champions move companies.
A clean Sales Nav list would’ve saved me a lot of “Hey, long time” detective work.

3) Build my own performance tracker
Activity, velocity, pipeline coverage, conversion, attainment.
Don’t let your manager or RevOps be the first to spot the red flags.

4) Study two elite calls every week
Borrow the intros. Borrow the objection handling. Borrow the flow.
Most of sales is pattern recognition.

5) Make friends with RevOps early
They see the real story behind the numbers.
A quiet chat with RevOps can save you a quarter.

6) Keep a dead deals folder
Ghosted, stalled, lost.
Reviewing them weekly reveals uncomfortable but important patterns.

7) Build a small network of sellers outside my company 
Different playbooks. Different tools. Different truths.
It speeds up your learning more than any internal training.

8) Run my own QBR every quarter
What I won, what I botched, what I’m upgrading.
Treat yourself like a business unit, not an employee.

9) Maintain a moving list of champions and customers
Not just for the next quarter, but for the next decade of your career.

10) Focus on being the easiest rep to buy from
Clear next steps, tidy comms, simple decisions.
Buyers remember the reps who make their lives quieter.

None of these are complicated.

All of them compound.

And I wish I’d taken them seriously much earlier.

What's a habit you wish you'd built sooner?

This immediately kills deals.

Here’s why walking through proposals live is non-negotiable:

• You control the narrative
• You address objections in real-time
• You avoid any detail being misinterpreted 
• You can continue the discovery (it never stops) 
• You can read the room and adjust your pace, tone etc

The biggest reason though?

You’re not just selling a solution.

You’re selling confidence in the outcome.

And confidence is best built through conversations, not PDFs.
