Lately, I’ve been thinking a lot about writing. Not content. Not output. Actual writing: the kind that starts as a half-formed thought and only makes sense once you’ve lived with it for a bit.

I really consider myself a writer. It’s the part of my job I’m most protective of. The part I don’t want to automate away, even when everything around it is optimized for speed, volume, and “just ship it”.

And yes, before it sounds like I’m pretending AI doesn’t exist: I use it. Often. I use it to understand topics faster, explore angles, prepare better questions, sense-check ideas. It helps me learn.

But the writing itself still happens elsewhere. In the shower. At the gym. After long conversations. When something someone said keeps echoing longer than expected. That’s where opinions form. And writing without an opinion is just syntax.

That’s why a blog my friend Nicholas S. wrote stuck with me. Nick is an award-winning screenwriter, worked on sets for Disney and Lionsgate, and treats words like a craft, not a shortcut. His piece on AI and creative writing wasn’t anti-tech. It was a reminder. That writing is an art form. That voice isn’t generated, it’s earned.

One detail stayed with me: the em dash. How a punctuation mark became a giveaway for machine-written text. Not because it’s bad, but because style, once mass-produced, stops being style.

Everything feels faster now. Shorter. Video-first. “No one reads anymore anyway.” Maybe that’s true. Still, I miss good blogs. Long articles. Writing that trusted you to stay.

It makes me grateful for my language teachers — the ones who taught us that writing is thinking made visible. (see what I did there? ;))) )

AI can help you get informed.
It can’t give you a voice.

That part is still worth protecting.
