A Chinese doctor moved to the U.S. and couldn't find a job at a hospital. So he opened a small clinic and put up a bold sign that read:

“Cure for $20 — If you’re not cured, get $100 back!”

One day, a clever American lawyer saw the sign. “This looks like a scam,” he thought, “but maybe I can make a quick $100!” He walked in, feeling confident.

Lawyer: “Doctor, I’ve lost my sense of taste.”

Doctor: “Nurse, Box 22 — three drops in his mouth.”

Lawyer: “Ugh! That’s kerosene!”

Doctor: “Perfect! Your taste is back. That’ll be $20.”

A few days later, the lawyer came back.

Lawyer: “Doctor, I’ve lost my memory. I can’t remember anything.”

Doctor: “Nurse, Box 22 — three drops.”

Lawyer: “Wait! That’s kerosene again!”

Doctor: “Wonderful! Your memory is restored. That’s $20.”

Still determined, the lawyer tried one last time.

Lawyer: “Doctor, my eyesight is failing. I can’t see a thing!”

2. The more you consume, the more pessimistic you become:

Whenever I go down a rabbit hole on LinkedIn or X, I get bummed out. Culture wars, fighting, lack of empathy for our fellow humans. It's gross.

3. The longer you write, the better at your craft you become:

If you write every single day for a long time, you will eventually become a relatively decent writer. And there's no better way to communicate your thoughts.

4. The more you outsource creative work to AI, the dumber you become:

The more AI does your creative work, the more you forget how to be creative and original. You sound like everyone else. You blend in. You're not interesting.

TL;DR:

1. Create daily
2. Consume less
3. Write until you're good
4. Don't outsource creative

Is it a perfect data point? 
Do haters sometimes win?

Of course.

But I'm not interested in the outliers.
I'm interested in what happens 90% of the time.

Lead from the front, be optimistic and supportive and lift someone up when you see them accomplish something worth celebrating.

Be a karma entrepreneur.

Because even if you're successful as a hater, it's far more lonely when you get there, and nobody's there to congratulate you.

Unhappy people ignore the basics.

They make life insanely complicated.

1. Marry someone who compliments them.
2. Spend time working on their health.
3. Build a business they own.
4. Protect their time.

That's it.

Sure, there are lots of other things that are nice to get right, but if you nail these?

But they're the whole game.

Maybe nobody in your family is an entrepreneur.

Nobody in mine is.

They didn't work for themselves.
Nobody built something from scratch.

My parents didn't bet their income on an idea they had in the shower.

From when I was a kid, the path was always laid out:

Get a degree, get a job, stay for 40 years, and retire.

That was the plan. 
And everyone I know from back home followed it.

So when you say "I want to build something on my own," sometimes you don't have anyone in your corner who understands.

They're not being mean or disinterested.

They just don't have a frame of reference for what you're describing.

I've found that to be a big advantage, actually.

The people who grew up around entrepreneurs usually inherited someone else's playbook.

They work through a set of assumptions about what a business should look like. 

How much funding to raise. 
How hard it's supposed to feel.
How many employees you need. 

Maybe you don't carry any of that baggage.

You get to start with a blank page. 

You don't have to live up to anyone else's expectations about how big your business should be, or how fast it should grow, or what success is supposed to look like.

The first person in any family to do something different has one thing nobody else has: 

The freedom to define their life and business from absolute scratch.

You just have to be willing to figure it out without a map.

The more you do, the luckier you get.

That's what my Dad used to tell me.

Turns out, he's a pretty smart guy.

The "luckiest" people I know often operate in a different gear, especially earlier in their lives and careers.

- They read and learn more.
- They reach out to more people.
- They show up to more opportunities.
- They share their knowledge more freely.

In the end, luck is just the aggregate total of time spent learning + the sheer number of good things you've put out into the world.

Is it a guarantee?
Nope.
Not much in life is.

Does it increase your likelihood?
Hell yes.

A richer life can be found by filling up the 3 most important buckets.

1. Health

Nothing in your life matters if you aren't in good health.

You can be rich, famous, loved, adored, have the biggest and most complete family, and if you're not healthy enough to enjoy it, it doesn't matter.

Cultivate a strong mind and body daily with one action.


2. Wealth

Wealth doesn't mean accumulating as much money as humanly possible.

It means understanding how to use financial gain to create leverage and optionality in your life.

The "wealthiest" people have enough. And that enough-ness means complete freedom.


3. Relationships

You can be as healthy as a horse and as wealthy as you can be, but if you don't have anyone to spend your time with, it doesn't matter either.

Build an optimistic, like-minded, open, caring group of friends and family to share your life with.

Now...of course, there are many other things in people's lives:

- Faith
- Service
- Purpose
- Etc.

I'm not discounting those at all. All admirable and part of a well-rounded life.

But once you have your health, wealth, and relationships in order...

When I was 27, a friend of mine made me feel very stupid about my $45,000 salary.

She didn't do it on purpose.

She was just genuinely surprised that I was "making so little" compared to what she was making at the same age.

It stung, to be honest.

The truth is that you feel behind because you only know how to read the current scoreboard.

And scoreboards are just snapshots of a specific moment. 

They can tell you exactly where things stand right now, but they're terrible at predicting what happens next.

On August 2nd, 2019, a good friend of mine told me I was making "the dumbest mistake of my career."

The day before, I had walked away from a high-paying C-level role at a company worth north of $500M.

I'm sure he wasn't the only person who felt that way.

I think my parents might have.
Most of my friends probably did.
And my old co-workers thought I lost my mind.

But when I looked around at everyone else's life, here's what I saw:

A bunch of people who had made reasonable choices their whole lives, and ended up unhappy.

My only thought was to act on it accordingly.

The best vehicle that lets you achieve this.

5. Travel the world: 
Learn how others live so you can relate.

(and of course, for each person, there are other additions)

Things not on this list:

1. Working weekends.
2. Climbing the corporate ladder.
3. Chasing the most money possible.
4. Working to impress people you don't even like.

The crazy part is that most people spend 90% of their time on the second list.

Then they wonder why they feel empty when they "win" that game.

Here's what I've learned building my business:

The more I subtract, the more I can focus on the first list.

Fewer projects to manage.
Fewer obligations on my calendar.
Fewer things that pull me away from what matters.

You don't need more. 
You need less of the wrong stuff.

Protect the five. 
Ignore the rest.

Quiet people don't win.

I hate that, but it's true.

I spent nearly two decades making other people extremely wealthy.

That's how it works.

You generate money for the business.
You keep about 25% of that.

They keep the rest.

Every deal closed, dollar earned, and team built had a huge baked-in margin for the company.

They reaped the rewards of upside.
I got the salary and bonus.

At 38, I came to my senses:

If you want to capture 100% of the value you create, you must work for yourself.

So I walked away.

Now, I keep 100% margins, own my hours, build deeper relationships with customers, and all of this compounds for me over time.

What a huge difference in leverage creation.

Employees trade upside for security.
Entrepreneurs trade security for upside.

Both are very valid, and neither is "right" or "wrong."
