After a 2 year semi-hiatus, where I managed SEO and Digital marketing departments for other companies on a contract basis, I set up Nikki-Pilkington.com.

Taking the 30 years of experience I have in Digital Marketing and promoting websites, and realising that my skills lie in writing copy and content for websites and blogs that shows up well in Google, I decided to focus purely on this.

I went into a client call last week with dread - their traffic wasn't going to set any LinkedIn post alight, I knew they'd been burned before and were looking for me to prove myself, and I wasn't sure how it was going to go.

I also knew my strategy was the right one, and it was going to work for them.

The comment I made that elicited the above soundbite? I told them I checked their status, rankings, and conversions every day. 

They told me that an enquiry from organic search had led to them pitching for a £50k job.

Neither of us know yet if it's going to result in work.

But they know that I've got their back.

AI has changed copywriting, maybe forever.

Not because ChatGPT writes better than you (it doesn't). But because clients think it does.

You're competing on price with people charging £50 a page for website copy. You're justifying your rates to clients who don't understand why they should pay you when "AI can do it for free." You're watching work dry up or margins shrink.

Adding SEO changes this.

Because while AI can write words, it can't audit a website and identify what's broken. It can't develop a strategy based on business goals. It can't understand search intent properly. It can't optimise existing content someone else wrote three years ago.

When ChatGPT hit, my copywriting enquiries dried up. Clients went to AI for blog posts and website copy. It was rough, and I was worried.

But my SEO work kept coming. Retainer work that meant I had a regular monthly income and wasn't as desperate for those one-off copywriting projects.

And once I'd proved myself to clients on the SEO front, when I told clients their AI content wasn't helping their rankings - and showed them the data proving it - they listened. And they paid me to fix it.

Being able to offer SEO didn't just add another service. It carried me through months when copywriting work was thin on the ground. It meant I had something clients couldn't get from ChatGPT.

The Government fine parents for pulling kids out of school to go on holiday because ‘even missing one day of school adversely affects your child’s education’ (utter garbage, imo)

and yet they are now having to consider the idea of schools going to four day weeks to avoid teacher burnout and stem the rising tide of teachers leaving the profession.

Tomorrow has traditionally been one of my least happy days of the year. 

l have to produce content about the Budget as quickly as possible after the Chancellor stops speaking. ln days gone by that would mean sitting at my keyboard writing while the speech was going on but that makes it very easy to miss important points. 

These days there’s no need to do that because l can record the speech, feed the transcript to my AI ‘pal’ and have it create the first draft of the blog which l then edit. The AI can repurpose the blog into social posts, emails or anything else l need. 

lt makes the entire process much less fraught and l get time to think about tailoring the content to the audience rather than simply getting the main points down. 

So, although financially AI has had a negative impact on my business this year, this is a big upside. 

Tomorrow afternoon will be a breeze instead of a storm. Thanks Claude 😊
