My background: 

I am a digital native with over ten years of experience in the field of innovation. I support companies in implementing innovation strategies and new business models. I catalyze ideas from corporate leaders in the areas of strategy and innovation and provide advisory from the initial thought to market entry.

I have studied computer science and business administration with a focus on human-computer interaction and management accounting at RWTH Aachen University. I continued as a scientist at the Fraunhofer Institute for Applied Information Technology FIT. I hold a Ph.D. (Dr. rer. nat.) in computer science and founded a start-up for algorithmic sports performance analysis based on big data.

Furthermore, I hold several teaching positions at the TU Munich, TH Cologne, and TU Dortmund.

Everyone talks about "crossing the chasm" as an innovation problem.

Early adopters on one side. Mainstream on the other.

But most innovation projects never get there.

Not because customers reject them.
Because someone internal does.

The real chasm is not adoption.

That is the path. And most projects get stuck somewhere in the middle.

The most expensive mistakes in industrial product development rarely happen late.
They happen at the very beginning — when teams believe they already know enough to commit.

In that moment:

• assumptions feel like facts
• direction feels logical
• confidence replaces evidence
• budgets and engineering capacity get locked
• and reversing course becomes costly or impossible.

This is what I call false certainty before commitment.

Industrial companies don’t usually fail because of bad execution.
They fail because critical decisions were made on invisible, untested assumptions long before development resources were committed.

That’s where I come in.

I design decision processes for industrial leadership and product teams exactly at the point where:

• a product idea feels right but lacks evidence
• multiple options compete for development capacity
• market assumptions are driving internal commitment
• strategic direction is being locked before real validation
• circular business model decisions increase systemic risk.

My role is not to create ideas.
Not to build consensus.
Not to decide for you.

My role is to make decision-relevant assumptions visible, structure uncertainty and help teams gain clarity before serious resources are committed.

Because once development budgets, engineering capacity and roadmaps are locked, every wrong assumption becomes expensive.

NUMBERS DON’T LIE… OR? 

Ever seen a calculation method that seems to work perfectly—until you try it with different numbers?

That’s exactly what happens in this video.
Try the square root of 16... I am not the best at math, but I know it is not FIVE.

And it’s a powerful reminder:
📌 Just because numbers look convincing doesn’t mean they’re correct.
📌 Data without context can be misleading.
📌 The real question is: What’s behind the numbers?

In product development and innovation, numbers often give a false sense of certainty:
 •	Business cases built on best guesses
 •	Market projections with untested assumptions
 •	ROI calculations based on wishful thinking

Why Do Most Ideas Never See the Light of Day?

HOW THE FIRST IPHONE CHANGED EVERYTHING.

Back in 2007, every phone had fixed keyboards and buttons.
They were the same for every app, whether you needed them or not.

That’s still true today.
And yet, many innovation teams build features, technologies, or products … instead of focusing on the improvement customers actually want.

The formula is simple:

➪ Customers buy if the perceived improvement is bigger than the cost & effort to use it.

➪ If not, even the smartest R&D team will fail to create adoption.

ICH WAR LETZTE WOCHE IN EINER SCHULE.

Mal nicht als Elternteil. Als Beobachter.

Vier Stunden. Jugendliche zwischen 12 und 14. Sie haben Aufgaben gelöst – alleine, in Kleingruppen, im Team. Wir vier aus der Wirtschaft haben zugeschaut und beobachtet.

Unsere Aufgabe: Nur Stärken sehen.

Das klingt einfach. Ist es nicht.

Ich habe gemerkt, wie schwer mein Gehirn dagegen arbeitet. Der erste Impuls ist immer: bewerten, einordnen, korrigieren. Wirklich nur zu schauen, was jemand kann – das war am Anfang anstrengend.

Und dann wurde es leichter. Und dann war es schön.

Am Ende haben wir jedem Jugendlichen eine Urkunde mit seinen fünf Stärken überreicht. Das war ein toller Moment.

In Innovationsprozessen machen wir beides falsch:

➪ Manche Ideen werden zu früh tot geredet. „Haben wir schon probiert." „Zu teuer." „Der Chef will das nicht." – bevor irgendjemand wirklich hingeschaut hat.

➪ Andere Ideen werden zu lange geliebt. Teams verlieben sich in ihre Lösung, ohne je zu fragen, ob irgendjemand da draußen dieses Problem wirklich hat.

Beides ist ein Wahrnehmungsproblem.

In der Schule haben wir vier Stunden lang geübt, anders hinzuschauen.

I just walked through.

Some guy honked and gave me the finger – because he had green. Also very German.

MOST PEOPLE BELIEVE that making a product sustainable automatically makes it more desirable to customers.

I believe that making a product sustainable only works if it aligns with what customers truly care about.

Too many companies assume:
🚨 Customers will pay more just because it’s sustainable.
🚨 Green labels alone will drive purchasing decisions.
🚨 Sustainability matters more than price, performance, or convenience.

But in reality, customers make trade-offs. They care about sustainability—but not at any cost.

Want to make sustainability a real business advantage? Align it with customer priorities.

✅ Solve a real problem first—sustainability should be a value-add, not the only value.

STRATEGY ≠ PLANNING. 
And what Customers have to do with STRATEGY... 


Many companies confuse planning with strategy—but they are not the same.

📌 A strategy is a set of integrated choices that position you on the playing field -and describe the assumptions of why this is the right one and how you can win.

📌 A plan is a list of things to do—often not connected with an outcome, usually focused on spending resources.

Planning feels safe.
✔️ Build a new factory
✔️ Hire more people
✔️ Launch a new product

Why? Because you control those things.

Strategy feels risky.
✔️ You define an outcome, but CUSTOMERS decide whether it works.

When you ask customers why they bought, most answers are:

➪ Symptoms

➪ Problems

➪ Fake causes

If you stop there, you miss the truth.

Because people often don’t know why they act – or they lie (even to themselves).

That’s why JTBD interviews work differently:

Assume nothing – you don’t know the cause.

Dig deeper – there is always a story behind the “impulse buy”.

Look for tradeoffs – progress always comes with choices.

Play dumb – people explain more when you pretend not to understand.

Everybody lies – your job is to get below the surface story.

Lesson: The goal is not to collect opinions.
It’s to uncover the causal chain of progress.

YOU NEED TO CREATE VALUE FOR YOUR CUSTOMERS. HERE’S HOW… 👇

Most ideas fail—not because they aren’t creative, but because they don’t solve a relevant problem for their customers.

Too often, ideas focus on the solution itself, never questioning or testing their assumptions.

To reduce the risk of failure, you need to validate the problem-solution fit early.
One of my favorite tools for this is the Value Proposition Canvas (by Strategyzer). It’s simple yet effective.

Here’s how to use it in 4 steps:
1️⃣ Understand your customers.
Define their jobs, pains, and gains.
💡 And remember, it’s not just functional jobs. Emotional and social jobs often drive buying decisions even more.

2️⃣ Map your solution.
How does your product relieve pain and create gains for the customer’s jobs?

3️⃣ Analyze the fit.
Ask yourself:
🔹 Are you solving an urgent and important problem?
🔹 Is your solution truly better than existing alternatives?
🔹 Would customers switch from their current solution to yours?

4️⃣ Validate your assumptions.
How much real evidence do you have?
📌 Not what you think, but what you know from customer feedback, interviews, and tests.
📌 Define your riskiest assumptions and find ways to test them before going all in.


TL;DR:
A great idea isn’t enough.
✔ Clearly define the customer problem.
✔ Identify the assumptions that must be true.
✔ Test them early to reduce risk and build confidence.
