My $0 MBA: What building (and failing) a startup taught me

I am enthusiastic about creating things and didn't want to make innovation solely. That burning desire led me from the structured halls of academia into the wild west of startup life. Little did I know I was enrolling in what I now call my "Private MBA" - except this one came with real stakes and real consequences.

The highs? Landing that dream client everyone in the industry knows. The lows? Watching my company hit a dead end. But here's the thing about startup life - every moment, even failure, is a masterclass in business.

Three expensive lessons I'll never forget:

1. Diversity isn't a buzzword - it's survival. We were three IT nerds with similar mindsets. Great for tech talk, terrible for challenging assumptions. Today, I know: diverse perspectives aren't just nice to have - they're essential for innovation.
2. Tight budgets are secret weapons. When resources are scarce, you learn to execute fast, think lean, and never lose sight of your goals. No theoretical framework can teach you what a dwindling bank account can.

My background: 

I am a digital native with over ten years of experience in the field of innovation. I support companies in implementing innovation strategies and new business models. I catalyze ideas from corporate leaders in the areas of strategy and innovation and provide advisory from the initial thought to market entry.

I have studied computer science and business administration with a focus on human-computer interaction and management accounting at RWTH Aachen University. I continued as a scientist at the Fraunhofer Institute for Applied Information Technology FIT. I hold a Ph.D. (Dr. rer. nat.) in computer science and founded a start-up for algorithmic sports performance analysis based on big data.

Furthermore, I hold several teaching positions at the TU Munich, TH Cologne, and TU Dortmund.

As a member of the advanced product development team, I was responsible for new technologies on high quality windshields and automotive glazing.

I led the flag ship development project for smart coatings with a team located in the US, Japan and Europe and presented the results to the Ministry of Economy of Luxembourg. I enjoyed the open innovation in a multi-cultural team very much. 

That's why I initiated many round tables including colleagues from different departments, customers, suppliers and development partners to produce innovative windshields for camera based autonomous driving cars and with the help of this amazing team we could improve the optical quality by a factor of 5. I'm so proud of contributing to our safer roads - for drivers, passengers and pedestrians. 

Besides I supported sales and marketing department with business plan, flyer, website and fair presentations. These tasks were fun due to my artistic creativity and were a great balance to my technical creativity.

I wrote in total 7 patents about my topics.

As a product manager I was responsible for cost calculation, customer interviews, demonstrations, quotes, testing, specifications, sales trainings, technical marketing for all glass inspection systems, e.g. for float glass, architectural glass, coated glass, switchable glass, automotive glass, pattern glass, 3D curvature measurement.

I was in contact with all well-known glass suppliers, like AGP, Pilkington, Saint-Gobain, AGC, Central Glass, Carlex, Sisecam, Fuyao, ... That's why I have a great overview of the whole glass market.

Product management was the best position for a creative all-rounder like me. I loved to use my spontaneous, artistic and technical creativity and to work with a multi-cultural team all around the world.

As a R&D developer I build camera-based test setups, coded automated evaluation software in Matlab, wrote software prototypes modules, prepared customer demonstrations and managed the lab. 

I was the bridge between R&D and software department.

During this time, I learned a lot about cameras, LED illuminations, image processing, machine learning, objects classification and glass quality requirements which made me the best candidate for my promotion to product manager.

I helped build a nano particle inhanced scanning near-field optical microscopy (SNOM) and conducted measurements of the Förster Resonance Energy Transfer (FRED) on dye-doped DNA.

For this I used a two donut-beam microscope with a Nd:YAG and a Helium laser for excitation of different dyes. Moreover, I gained insights into the working principle of cantilever-based tip microscopy and plasmonic resonance curves of silver and gold nano particle.

I used this deep knowledge many years later in my development of smart coatings.
