𝗣𝗿𝗮𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗰𝗲 "𝗥𝗶𝗴𝗵𝘁 𝘁𝗼 𝗗𝗶𝘀𝗰𝗼𝗻𝗻𝗲𝗰𝘁": Even in Jan/Feb, encourage a "Hard Stop" for internal pings after 7:00 PM.

I’m making a big bet for 2026: 𝗧𝗵𝗲 "𝗠𝗮𝗻𝘂𝗮𝗹 𝗥𝗲𝗰𝗼𝗻𝗰𝗶𝗹𝗲" 𝗶𝘀 𝗼𝗳𝗳𝗶𝗰𝗶𝗮𝗹𝗹𝘆 𝗱𝗲𝗮𝗱.

Every January, I talk to public practice owners who are proud of their "war stories"—the 80-hour weeks, the caffeine-fueled T4 marathons, and the late-night data entry.

But as we hit the second week of January, I want to challenge that. 𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗴𝗿𝗶𝗻𝗱 𝗶𝘀 𝗻𝗼𝘁 𝗮 𝘀𝘁𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗲𝗴𝘆. 𝗜𝘁’𝘀 𝗮 𝘁𝗲𝗰𝗵𝗻𝗶𝗰𝗮𝗹 𝗱𝗲𝗯𝘁.

If your senior staff is spending hours trying to tie out a payroll discrepancy for a T4 filing, you aren't just losing money—you’re losing your best people. That’s high-level Canadian tax expertise being wasted on a math error that a machine could have found in milliseconds.

This is one of many reasons why we are doubling down on 𝗔𝗜 𝗔𝗴𝗲𝗻𝘁𝘀 𝗮𝘁 𝗖𝗼𝘂𝗻𝘁𝗮𝗯𝗹𝗲. Right now, we are seeing the shift happen in real-time. Leading firms are moving away from "Basic Automation" (which just follows a rule) to "Agentic Workflows" (which solve the problem).

Let’s be honest: January in public practice usually feels like a losing battle against a mountain of PDFs and T-slips. 🇨🇦

But "Busy Season" doesn't have to be a hazing ritual. To win 2026, we have to stop romanticizing the grind and start prioritizing the shift.

Here is what it looks like to move from 𝗠𝗮𝗻𝘂𝗮𝗹 𝗦𝘂𝗿𝘃𝗶𝘃𝗮𝗹 𝘁𝗼 𝗔𝗴𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗶𝗰 𝗢𝘃𝗲𝗿𝘀𝗶𝗴𝗵𝘁:

𝗦𝗧𝗢𝗣 𝗧𝗛𝗜𝗦: Manually auditing your vendor list for T4A/T5 eligibility. 
𝗗𝗢 𝗧𝗛𝗜𝗦: Use AI to run a "Vendor Diagnostic." Let the machine flag every payout over $500 without a tax ID in seconds.

𝗦𝗧𝗢𝗣 𝗧𝗛𝗜𝗦: Sending generic "Document Request" emails that get ignored. 
𝗗𝗢 𝗧𝗛𝗜𝗦: Deploy an automated portal that compares this year’s uploads to last year’s. If a slip is missing, the system sends a specific, personalized nudge—no human typing required.

𝗦𝗧𝗢𝗣 𝗧𝗛𝗜𝗦: Finding payroll errors during the T4 Summary filing on Jan 30th. 
𝗗𝗢 𝗧𝗛𝗜𝗦: Run an AI anomaly check today. Catch the CPP/EI discrepancies now, while you still have time to fix them without the CRA’s "help."

𝗛𝗲𝗿𝗲’𝘀 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝘁𝗿𝘂𝘁𝗵: The shift won't be pretty the first time. It might not even be perfect the fifth time.

New workflows feel clunky. Staff might be skeptical. You’ll probably have to tweak a prompt or two. But it gets better with practice. Each "Agentic" task you hand off is an hour of capacity you give back to your senior team.

In public practice, we were trained to find the "right" answer and stay there. But the world of 2026 doesn't offer a "right" or "final" state anymore. It offers constant, relentless evolution.

Being a firm owner today isn't about finding a perfect system and resting. It’s about becoming a 𝗣𝗲𝗿𝗳𝗲𝗰𝘁 𝗝𝘂𝗴𝗴𝗹𝗲𝗿. 

Think about it. You are currently juggling:

The Jan 31st compliance deadlines.
A team that is wary of disruption.
A client base that expects 24/7 digital speed.
And now, the massive shift toward AI and Automation.

You might feel like dropping the balls. You might think, "Now is not a good time to disrupt my team."

"I’m waiting for the AI to be perfect or decent enough before we switch."

If I could give one small piece of advice to public practice leaders this January, it would be this: 𝗦𝘁𝗼𝗽 𝘄𝗮𝗶𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗮 𝗽𝗲𝗿𝗳𝗲𝗰𝘁 𝘄𝗼𝗿𝗹𝗱 𝘁𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗶𝘀𝗻'𝘁 𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗮𝗻𝘆𝗺𝗼𝗿𝗲.𝗲𝘃𝗲𝗿.. 

In 2026, technology isn't just evolving; it’s accelerating faster than our ability to document it. If you wait for the "perfect" version of an AI workflow, you aren't being cautious—you’re becoming obsolete.

Winning 2026 is about: 
Choosing "Better than Yesterday" over "Perfect." 
Testing workflows in the heat of Jan/Feb, not in the quiet of July. 
Realizing that "safe" is actually the riskiest place to be.

The world is changing one week at a time. You can either be a spectator or a pilot.

"My team isn't ready." "It’s missing too many small features." "Our desktop system is perfect—why break it?"

If you’ve said these words recently, you aren't alone. As Firm Owners, we hear the friction. Change in public practice is hard because we are trained for 𝗽𝗿𝗲𝗰𝗶𝘀𝗶𝗼𝗻, and new systems—especially cloud and AI-driven ones—can feel "messy" compared to the local desktop we’ve used for a decade.

𝗕𝘂𝘁 𝗵𝗲𝗿𝗲 𝗶𝘀 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝘀𝗰𝗶𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗶𝗳𝗶𝗰 𝗿𝗲𝗮𝗹𝗶𝘁𝘆: Staying on a "𝗽𝗲𝗿𝗳𝗲𝗰𝘁" legacy system is the highest-risk move you can make in 2026. 

In a desktop environment, your data is a 𝘀𝗻𝗮𝗽𝘀𝗵𝗼𝘁. In the cloud, your data is a 𝘀𝘁𝗿𝗲𝗮𝗺. When teams resist, they aren't being "difficult." They are experiencing 𝗟𝗼𝘀𝘀 𝗔𝘃𝗲𝗿𝘀𝗶𝗼𝗻. They fear losing the "shortcuts" they know for a future they haven't mastered yet.

How to lead the shift (only if you are willing):
