Our team, GRIT-X Awa, has been selected as a Global Finalist in the NASA International Space Apps Challenge 2025. This year’s program brought together 114,094 participants from 167 countries and territories, forming 18,860 teams and developing 11,511 projects across 18 challenges. Being recognized among the top 45 projects worldwide by NASA’s Global Judges is an accomplishment we value deeply.

GRIT-X Awa, is a uniquely international team, bringing together members from six different countries. Working side by side with such a diverse and talented team Sanawer Batool, Rishi Kalaiarasan, Pablo Manjarres, Krish Patel, Yiğit Faruk DEMİR  has been genuinely inspiring and a privilege. Our shared commitment, discipline, and creativity defined this journey.

Regardless of the final outcome, we felt we had already succeeded through what we learned, built, and experienced together. We celebrated this with a small team gathering, appreciating the dedication and resilience that shaped our path.

This experience has strengthened our motivation for what comes next, and we look forward to continuing to contribute to innovative and impactful work.

You don’t need to be technical to get involved with NASA - National Aeronautics and Space Administration Open Data

I spoke at the NASA Open Data event in NYC hosted by Nate Cooper at Datadog with Micah Acinapura  and Alex Burg , and it was incredibly energizing to see how open and accessible this mission really is.

Here are 3 simple ways to start exploring NASA Open Data as a non-technical person:

1️⃣ Use tools like Perplexity to understand NASA datasets quickly: Many NASA datasets span decades, missions, and instruments. Asking targeted questions helps you get clarity fast so you know which datasets are worth exploring.

2️⃣ Find NASA data that connects to a real curiosity or challenge: Whether it’s Earth observation data, space imagery, climate indicators, or atmospheric measurements, start with the part of NASA’s catalog that speaks to something you genuinely want to understand or solve.

3️⃣ Prototype a simple idea using NASA data, not a full app: Use no-code or AI tools like Lovable to build one small feature that brings a NASA dataset to life. A quick demo or mini-app helps you validate whether the insight or use case resonates before investing more time.

Last night at Evil Twin Brewing in DUMBO, we celebrated Civic Tech'ish's 3rd anniversary. The event had over 400 RSVPs, and we now have more than 1,000 people in our community.

What's made these gatherings special is the breadth of attendees: folks working at the federal, state, and local levels, from government, nonprofits, consultancies, startups, and even venture studios—all focused on improving how government delivers services, from public benefits to transportation.

While the group has grown considerably since the original four of us in 2022, we've tried to preserve what made it work from the start: collaborative, positive, and light. The events have led to partnerships, hires, and idea-sharing, but we try to ensure they're uplifting and casual first and foremost. That's why we host these at breweries rather than offices, with fun additions—like this year's cactus raffle.

I'm proud to have spent a portion of my time building this, and I'm grateful to everyone who has joined us over the years.

More to come in early 2026—possibly even a co-hosted event. Stay tuned.
