Back in 2020, at the age of 16, I decided the PR industry needed a shake-up. 

That's when I started Platinum Live.

Hey, I’m Carina! I help people stand out on LinkedIn by turning their thoughts, experiences, and expertise into content that gets seen and starts conversations.

As an Account Manager at the world’s leading personal branding agency, I work with founders, execs, and professionals to grow their audience, build credibility, and open doors to new opportunities.

I’ve spent years figuring out what actually works on LinkedIn, what flops, and how to create content that people want to read.

You can ace exams and still struggle in the workplace if no one taught you how to speak.

School didn’t teach me public speaking.

Girlguiding did.

At 14, I was running sessions and leading teams.

That’s where I got used to speaking in front of a room (and it's pretty daunting as a teen to do this in front of other teens!)

Most people don’t get that kind of practice.

So, standing up to speak often feels terrifying, even as adults.

Thankfully, by the time I started getting invited to speak as a panellist with my personal brand, I'd had plenty of time to practice.

If you're working on it, here are 7 tips that actually help:

🌻 Make eye contact with 5 people for 5 seconds each
🌻 Pause after key points to let them land
🌻 Start with a question, a story, and a clear message
🌻 Keep your palms open when you speak
🌻 Structure your message into 3 key points
🌻 Allow plenty of time to rehearse
🌻 Keep stories under 2 minutes

Speaking clearly and with confidence is one of the most valuable skills you can build.

And like anything else, you get better with practice.

🌻 Communication Skills
If people do not understand you, it is hard to do your job properly.
→ Speak clearly: Say what you mean in a way that makes sense to the person you are talking to.
→ Listen properly: Pay attention to what is being said instead of thinking about what you are going to say next.

🌻 Teamwork
Most jobs rely on working well with other people, whether you like it or not.
→ Be reliable: Follow through on what you say you will do so people can trust you.
→ Support others: Notice effort and give credit where it is due.

🌻 Adaptability
Things change quickly at work, and being able to adjust makes a big difference.
→ Stay open-minded: Try not to push back on change straight away without understanding it first.
→ Learn as you go: You are not expected to know everything, especially when something is new.

🌻 Problem-Solving
Every role comes with its own set of problems, and how you deal with them matters.
→ Break it down: Spend time figuring out what the real issue is before jumping to solutions.
→ Think creatively: Do not limit yourself to the most obvious option if it is not working.

🌻 Time Management
Everyone is busy, but managing your time well helps you stay in control of your workload.
→ Prioritise properly: Focus on what actually needs doing now instead of everything at once.
→ Plan ahead: Use tools like calendars or simple to-do lists to keep yourself organised.

🌻 Emotional Intelligence
Understanding people makes working with them much easier.
→ Know yourself: Be aware of how you react in certain situations and why.
→ Show empathy: Try to see things from someone else’s point of view before responding.

🌻 Work Ethic
Talent helps, but consistency is what people remember.
→ Be consistent: Show up, meet deadlines, and do the work even on quieter days.
→ Put care into your work: Small extra effort often makes a bigger difference than you think.

🌻 Conflict Resolution
Disagreements happen at work, and how you handle them says a lot about you.
→ Stay calm: Take a moment before responding so things do not escalate.
→ Look for solutions: Focus on moving things forward rather than proving a point.

These skills are not just about doing well at work.

We took young people hiking in the rain and mud

And the lessons were bigger than the puddles.

This weekend’s hike for DofE training wasn’t a walk in the park, literally and figuratively. I was there as a Guide leader, supporting young people as they trained for their expedition. 

We faced
🌧 Unexpected floods
🧭 Rerouted trails
👣 Boots half lost in mud

At first, the kids groaned. But within minutes they were
➡ Reading maps like pros
➡ Encouraging each other when the path disappeared
➡ Laughing at slips as part of the adventure

That’s resilience in action. It’s not about being perfect. It’s about adapting when the plan changes.

Nature gives young people what screens can’t real uncertainty and real choice. Outdoor learning connects them with others, improves their confidence, and teaches them how to persevere when the going gets tough.

Our main takeaways:

If everything went to plan, there’d be no stories
