“Do you have a hot date after work?”
That’s what my boss said to me one afternoon.

He glanced at what I was wearing and laughed.
I laughed too.

 Because that’s what you do, right?
But inside, it felt like a punch in the gut.

There was this instant rush of shame — sharp and unexpected — like I had been exposed.

 Like I had done something wrong just by showing up as myself.
I remember thinking, Oh. That’s how I’m being seen.

I rationalized it.

 He didn’t mean anything by it.
 I’m being too sensitive.
 It’s not a big deal.

But my body told a different story.
I threw on my coat.
 Wrapped a scarf around myself.
 Covered up.

The rest of the day, it lingered.
 The rest of the week, it lingered.
And if I’m being honest — it lingered for years.

That one comment didn’t just live in that moment.

After that, I started choosing “safer” options.

I stopped trusting the things I loved.

I’d put something on that felt like me — and then take it off.

Back and forth.
 Back and forth.

And what messed with my head the most?

It felt silly.

Years later, through my work as an image coach, I realized something:

I thought it no less than 100 times while sitting in the courthouse hallway this week.

Not to be rude.
(Though let’s be honest — it was a little judgy.)

But mostly?
From the perspective of someone who does this for a living.

Because here’s the truth:

Everyone in that hallway was making silent decisions about who was important… who was credible… who was getting taken seriously.

And in today’s world, that decision gets made in 1/10 𝐨𝐟 𝐚 𝐬𝐞𝐜𝐨𝐧𝐝.

Here’s what I saw:
❌ 𝐎𝐯𝐞𝐫𝐬𝐢𝐳𝐞𝐝, 𝐰𝐫𝐢𝐧𝐤𝐥𝐞𝐝 𝐬𝐮𝐢𝐭𝐬... silently saying “I didn’t prepare for this.”
❌ 𝐂𝐥𝐢𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐬 𝐢𝐧 𝐡𝐨𝐨𝐝𝐢𝐞𝐬... silently saying “I don’t take this seriously.”
❌ 𝐎𝐮𝐭𝐟𝐢𝐭𝐬 𝐭𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐝𝐢𝐬𝐚𝐩𝐩𝐞𝐚𝐫... silently saying  “Please don’t notice me.”

But I also saw this:

✨ A female attorney in an all-grey suit, printed sweater, silver loafers, and a clean barrette. Quietly in command.

🤠 A male attorney in a pinstriped navy suit 
and cowboy boots. Not my taste — but undeniably 𝘪𝘯𝘵𝘦𝘯𝘵𝘪𝘰𝘯𝘢𝘭.

💜 A law clerk in bold magenta pants and a coordinating sweater. She wasn’t dressing up — she was dressing like she 𝘣𝘦𝘭𝘰𝘯𝘨𝘦𝘥.

We don’t talk about this enough — how much your 𝐜𝐥𝐨𝐭𝐡𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐢𝐬 𝐬𝐩𝐞𝐚𝐤𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐟𝐨𝐫 𝐲𝐨𝐮 before you get to open your mouth.

You’re being judged.

Not for being perfect.

But for whether you look like you belong there.

Whether you carry the weight of your role.

Whether you care.

And if you’re showing up in a way that says “I’m just here to survive,”
