🎵 I wish  #NFTs existed 10 - 15 years ago.

I have practically been a music nerd for all my life. 

I used to play in various bands and as a solo artist as well as worked for record labels, organized festivals & managed up and coming artists.

I consider this experience very precious and am thankful for the opportunities I received.

I got to play in Los Angeles on Sunset Boulevard and toured the entire US.

Ranked up over half a million plays on Myspace (Yes, Myspace did exist back then)

Got featured in the biggest Rock/ Metal magazine in China.

And was on German TV.

Why am I telling you this?

It sounds like that could pay the bills right?

It didn't. AT ALL. It was a +- business.

Independent artists without much representation have it hard. 

Music piracy did not help at the beginning of the century.

And the model of streaming pays independent artists unfairly.

Along came COVID and seriously threatened live music and musicians.

Music NFTs taking off (in the next few years) feels like a resurrection for the music industry to me.
 
🎸 For independent artists NFTs could provide an opportunity to connect with fans in unique ways.

NFTs are not a get-rich-quick scheme, it needs work, but it could enable artists to make a better living than now.

You don't need millions of streams on Spotify, but maybe only a few hundred devoted fans that invest in your journey and see you grow.

💿 Record labels, publishing agencies & more can use NFTs to offer new experiences to music lovers.
At the same time creating new income streams could also mean that more investments go into up and coming artists long-term.

It puts a little bit of the power back into the hands of the music industry.

I've seen artists disappear over the years because they ran out of fuel at some point (financial wise).

BREAKING: Udio strikes AI licensing deal with Merlin, representing indie labels in 70+ countries and 15% of global music:

Merlin now licenses music to Udio for AI training.

Here's why this matters:
↳ Merlin represents indie labels in 70+ countries.
↳ They control 15% of global recorded music sales.

The deal structure:

→ Artists choose to participate
→ Labels get paid for their music
→ Compensation flows back to creators
→ Terms protect "human artistry"

This follows Udio's settlements with:
↳ Universal Music Group (October)
↳ Warner Music Group (November)

Both majors dropped their lawsuits.
Now they have licensing deals instead.

Merlin CEO Charlie Lexton said it best:
↳ "We work with partners who respect artists."

Udio CEO Andrew Sanchez added:
↳ "Independent artists are the driving force."

The shift is clear:

From courtroom battles:
↳ To commercial partnerships.

Udio is also hiring.
A Head of Artist Partnerships role.
Based in LA or New York.

For Merlin, this follows their ElevenLabs deal.

Another AI music licensing agreement.

The indie music world is choosing consent over conflict.
