Despairalysis is what happens when grief freezes action.
We step back. We go inward. We hunker.

And we might believe that this
is the same as staying calm. 

🧊But often, it's just staying in that freeze state
that your nervous system is serving up as a coping mechanism.

It's not surprising that we withdraw 
when feeling overwhelmed.

Most of us are taught early that despair must be processed 
quietly, and mostly alone. 

But for many, what heals isn’t this painful isolation.
It's not slow, quiet grieving.

It is action.
Not mindless doing, but intentional movements.

Because small focused action is what sends a message
to our nervous system that we are not trapped. 

That we have choices.
That we can complete things.
And this sense of regaining agency
shifts the energy. 

Grief metabolizes when it’s directed. 
It sharpens resolve. It becomes fuel.  

It pushes enlivening energy outward in waves.

History is full of grief-powered movements.
MADD. Life-saving product innovations. 
Local protections of people and places. 
All started by individuals overwhelmed by loss 
who chose one small action.

🌟Sometimes the smallest thing  
can tilt despair toward imagination, creative energy,
and momentum.

Right now, even when we regulate our own nervous system,
we may be surrounded by others
who are paralyzed by their despair.

Tight chest. Nervous stomach. A background hum of vigilance. 
Bodies evolved to detect change. 
When systems crumble, bodies notice first. 

That’s situational intelligence, and we need to pay attention to it.

The danger isn’t in noticing. It’s in dismissing. 
When we try to deny what we sense
or think our way out of 
what our nervous systems are already registering,
the signal doesn't go away. 
It just gets louder. 

What actually helps now is acknowledgment.
 “This is different.”
 “This is likely just the beginning.”
 “I don't know what will happen, but I want to feel more prepared."
 “I need to create stability for myself rather than constantly reacting."

That’s not fragility. It’s recalibration.
It is recognizing what we're seeing,
finding our way to remain steady,
and choosing how to respond.

How might your body be responding to change in ways your mind has not yet named?

In my Disrupt2Uplift project, I help others disrupt despair through creative, courageous, and comically subversive actions that delight and inspire.

The power of small actions is that they prove that we are not trapped.
That we can respond to how we feel by choosing to connect and act.

And that we can have FUN with it.

We can free our shut-down imagination 
and our numbed-out sense of humor 
and let them go little WILD.

Here's how it works: 
Pick a buddy. 
Start plotting TODAY.
And plan to implement your silly act of resistance THIS WEEK.

Think gleeful and visible acts 
that make others gasp and giggle.

Legal and safe. No property damage.
This isn’t about destruction.

It’s about filling you, your buddy, and those in your community 
with a sense of joyful solidarity.

Remember the videos of the person 
wearing an inflatable frog costume 
while facing masked men carrying guns? 

There is a specific advantage to choosing silly ways to resist:
they can be remarkably disarming. 

Unexpected. Delightful. 
And discombobulating to those whose role is to be intimidating. 

Because silliness is re-humanizing, if only for a moment.

I'm no expert, but something tells me that 
there were some smirks behind those masks. 

I'm guessing it's a lot harder 
to shoot someone at point-blank range
when you're trying not to laugh. 

Being silly and subversive might be the safest way to resist.
It's certainly the most fun. 

Remember that you can turn your despair about the world 
into creative energy and some good-hearted and healing mischief 
for the sake of those all around you.

Like the subvetsive merrymakers in my Disrupt2Uplift project, 
you can remain anonymous.
It can be a secret shared only 
between you and your partner in silliness. 
This keeps you safe, and honestly, it's downright thrilling.

Embracing laughter, silliness, and joy is 
not a lack of commitment to the cause. 

It is how we fall in love with what is still possible.
