Exactly 1 year ago, I quit my job.  
Not fired—not forced out. I chose to leave, even when the economy was down and no new jobs were coming up.

In one call, I saw why so many GTA families feel broke on time, not money.

I was supposed to be writing this post from Cancun while sipping Margaritas.
Instead, I am stuck in a Toronto bedroom!

Six months ago, me and friends planned a full one week trip to Mexico.
5 years in canada and our first boys trip.
But some last minute immigration changes (good for my long-term status, bad for my vacation) meant I couldn't leave Canada.
I asked them to fly without me.

Some problems we don't have any control.
But most money problems start because we listen to the wrong people.

I see it all the time in my discovery calls.
People who studied for 10 plus years making mistakes because
- some friend or uncle told me about this stock to invest in
- my landlord has stayed here for 2 decades so I trusted him
- oh we went to a party and this friend's friend talked about crypto so we put our money there.
- we send money back home as Indian market is strong and we don't want to invest here
- my company takes care of the investment

But when plans are opened
People loose confidence
When capital gains taxes or estate taxes are explained, then people sweat.

It takes months and sometimes years of discipline and consistency to undo the mistakes.

The Canada Child Benefit just got increased—families with kids under 6 get up to $8,157 per year, and those with kids aged 6-17 get $6,883.

But here's what nobody talks about:

What are you doing with that money?

If you're not putting it into an RESP, you're leaving thousands—maybe tens of thousands—on the table.

Here's why RESPs matter:
The government matches 20% of your contributions through the Canada Education Savings Grant (CESG), up to $500 per year and a lifetime maximum of $7,200 per child.

That's free money—just for saving for your kid's education.

But it gets better when you see the numbers:

Example 1: Start early, contribute $2,500/year

If you contribute $2,500 annually for 15 years (to get the full CESG match), you'd put in $37,500. With the $7,200 CESG grant and compound growth at 7%, you could have over $82,000 saved by the time your child turns 18.

Example 2: Lump sum + annual top-ups

Some parents contribute $16,500 in year one ($2,500 for the CESG + $14,000 extra), then keep topping up annually. By age 18, with 7% returns, this strategy could grow to over $116,000!!

The difference? Time and compound interest working for you—not against you.

Your Canada Child Benefit is already coming.
The real question is: are you turning it into your child's future, or just covering today's bills?

This summer, I did zip lining with my dad.

Helmet. Harness. Locks double-checked.  
Three staff did safety checks.  
I tugged the straps again and again, asking, “Are you sure this is safe?”

You get all the prep, but at some point you realize: someone else picked the gear, set the rules, and decided what “safe enough” means.  
All you can do is trust—and hope nothing gets missed.

It hit me later:  
Group insurance at work feels a lot like that harness.

Yes, it’s inbuilt into your company. Sometimes it’s practically free, or you pay a tiny premium. But you don’t pick the coverage, limits, or what’s checked.

All those checks don’t matter when you’re no longer strapped in.

3. INVEST & LEARN

You don’t need to predict the market, but you do need to understand the basics of what you own.

Over the past few weeks, I went down a rabbit hole and read more than 300 pages of research on money and debt in Canada. What I found was very different from the feel‑good headlines:

- Canadians owe about $1.74 for every $1 of income—one of the highest household debt levels in the world.
- Over 70% of Canadians carry some kind of debt, and many use credit just to cover normal monthly expenses.
- Savings are low, retirement planning is weak, and a lot of people use things like HELOCs or payday loans without really understanding how costly they are long term.

So people turn to Reddit and Quora, asking strangers what to do with their life savings. 
A close friend of mine did exactly that—put over $200–300k into Bitcoin because “everyone online” said it was the next big thing. Today, she has under $50k left. That’s the kind of mistake I don’t want to see repeated.

Anonymous usernames giving financial advice.

Type “canada finance” into Reddit and you’ll see it:
people posting questions that, if answered badly, can wreck years of their life.

“First real job, first paycheck – where do I even start?”
“Thinking about moving my TFSA/RRSP… is this the right move?”
“Should I sell my mutual funds?”
“Net worth 650k – am I doing this right or screwing it up?”

These are not bad questions.
The problem is when and where they’re being asked.

And the answers?
Strangers. Anonymous usernames. People who might know what they’re doing… or might just be parroting what they did with their own money.

Let me ask you, health is not good, which advice you would follow Reddit or Doctor?
You’d find a qualified doctor, listen carefully, and follow the plan.

Money deserves the same respect.
There are professionals who understand cash flow, tax, investing, retirement, and estate planning—but you have to ask them in the right places, not in a comment thread.

Here’s the quiet reality no one likes to admit:
Most people don’t have a written money plan.
Most people have never sat down with an expert to map out,
“Here’s where you are. Here’s where you want to be. Here’s the path.”

So they outsource their family’s future to:
Reddit threads
TikTok clips
Group chats
The “finance guy” their parents used 20 years ago
