Nike’s current turnaround attempt is fascinating - not because it’s flashy, but because it exposes a tension every brand eventually faces:

Brand vs. performance.

For years, Nike leaned heavily into brand power. Cultural dominance. Emotional storytelling. 

And then they shifted. Chasing margins with a move from wholesale to D2C and a focus on last click performance metrics.

Nike didn’t suddenly become a bad brand. But they lost their identity and shelf space in a crowded wholesale market.

This left a gap for new competitors like Hoka and ON.

But with Elliot Hill back at the helm as CEO and a turnaround strategy in place, hopefully we are at the beginning of a positive shift for Nike.

That’s why Apple's CEO Tim Cook increasing his stake in Nike matters as a supporting signal. It’s a vote of confidence in leadership and long-term brand equity.

Nike’s challenge isn’t relevance.

It’s proving again that the product deserves the story, and showing that brand and performance can work well together.
