#AI in #Tax #Finance and #IT  — Progress, Pressure & Perspective

There’s something fascinating about how quickly AI has gone from “future trend” to “daily reality.”

In just a year, I’ve seen tax, finance, and IT teams move from cautious curiosity to active experimentation.

Small pilots. Process automations. AI tools for data validation or report drafting.
The momentum is real — and it’s not slowing down.

But with that progress comes a quiet pressure.

AI promises efficiency, yet it introduces new questions:
❓ Who owns the outputs?
❓ How do we explain decisions made by algorithms?
❓ Where’s the line between human oversight and machine intelligence?

In tax, AI is helping to clean and reconcile data faster than ever.

In IT, it’s reshaping architecture conversations — about data pipelines, security, and trust.
And in finance, it’s helping teams forecast, model, and plan in ways that once took days.

Still, every gain brings a responsibility.
We can automate, but we can’t abdicate.
AI can assist, but it can’t be accountable.

The companies who seem to be doing the best aren’t the ones rushing to “AI everything.”

They’re the ones building frameworks, not just workflows. ✅ 

They’re asking hard questions early — about data lineage, control, and ethics — before the tech is embedded too deep to change.

Because the real opportunity isn’t in using AI faster.
It’s in using it wiser.

That’s what separates transformation from turbulence.

Last week I spent a lot of time in conversations with organisations preparing for — or already deep into — their #SAP #S4HANA transformations. And something struck me that I can’t quite shake.

Across industries, leaders are fully aware of how fast the world is moving.

They see the #regulatory shifts, the rise of real-time data requirements, and the increasing sophistication of tax authorities. (Just this week, #ANAF in Romania openly discussed how they’re consolidating and cross-checking data at a scale we haven’t seen before, with audits for 500 large companies announced)

Yet many transformation programs are still focusing almost exclusively on the narrow questions:

“Do you cover this localisation?”
“Do you have tax determination?”
“Can you plug into our existing workflow?”

Important questions — of course. But they’re not the whole story.

What surprised me is how few teams are stepping back to consider the bigger picture:

❓️What will we need 12 months from now? 24 months? Five years?

How will we handle a world where tax authorities don’t just collect data — they connect it?
Where cross-checking is the norm, not the exception?
Where Excel simply won’t keep up?

The #tax authorities are already thinking this way. But in many transformation programs, the tax function still isn’t. Or they are being asked to do this with less than 1% of the overall programme budget.

Too many decisions are being made based on today’s pain points rather than tomorrow’s realities. Too many local or non-scalable solutions are being implemented into programs meant to last a decade.

The biggest shift we’re experiencing isn’t just e-invoicing, or even continuous transaction controls. It’s the data shift: the ability — and expectation — to reconcile, validate, and tell a coherent story across every touchpoint all the way from #vat into #tp and beyond.

And S/4 transformations are a rare moment where organisations can set themselves up to handle that shift gracefully… or end up revisiting the same questions sooner than they think.

My takeaway this week?

The companies that look beyond the immediate checklist — the ones whose tax, finance, and IT teams are thinking in years, not quarters — are the ones preparing not just for compliance… but for resilience.

Tax authorities will be present in every step of your daily operations, not at only month end.

Running SAP BW in-memory on Db2 BLU is super fast and operates at a fraction of the cost of BW on HANA. Plus, if you run SAP on Db2, you’re already licensed for BLU in-memory acceleration. Not a penny more need be spent.

Try it if you plan to stick with ECC and BW for the foreseeable, it’s excellent. Fast as lightning, cheap as chips, and far greener than the alternative.
