What's the most visible (and quickest) way to show people how good you are at your job?

Your job postings.

They're more than just a way to find active job seekers. They're your most looked at marketing assets - by a mile.

Roughly 90% of job postings start by telling the reader about the company.

Why?

I understand why large companies do it - they're a bit tipsy from drinking their own Kool Aid.

But I don't understand why agencies do it - especially as the vast majority of their job postings are trying to keep the hiring company anonymous. 

That's like entering a one-legged man into an arse-kicking contest.

But seriously, if you're an agency recruiter, why are you starting your job postings with something you can only talk about in vague generalities?  

Is it because that's how most job descriptions start and so that's what job postings should look like?

Or maybe it's because you think the company is the biggest/best selling point?

Or is there another reason?

There are lots of potential candidates out there that aren't as fulfilled in their job as they once were.

But it hasn't got so bad that they're starting to hate their job. Not yet anyway.

Add to that the fact there are fewer relevant openings (and all the conflicting reports on qualified candidates being ignored in a sea of faked applications) it makes it very easy for them to just hold tight and stay where they are.

But that lack of fulfilment doesn't go away.

The question is, do you need them now, or can you wait till they hate their job and become desperate?

Here's something from Neil Matthams on recruiter outreach.

The only part I slightly disagree with is the message execution - but the overall theme of clarity and brevity is spot on.

I particularly liked this part:

"If you cannot articulate the role in 300 characters, the market will reveal it anyway. Better to learn in five minutes than five weeks."

Most people do look at recruiter outreach. But 'look at' isn't the same as read.

But, the fact remains that if a recruiter can't write a compelling job ad, they almost certainly can't write a compelling outreach message.

It's never about the channel. It's always about what you put into that channel.
