Two months late but better than never! In early December, I had the chance to attend my very first Canadian Association of Professional Speakers Convention in Halifax. What a VIBE!

At most conferences I attend everyone has a similar area of expertise - all HR folks or accountants or engineers. At this conference, everyone has a totally different area of expertise but what they do have in common is that they SPEAK about that expertise. So there are HR folks but there are also criminologists, CEO's, athletes, magicians and EMCEEs.

This makes for a wild experience! This was by far the most outgoing conferences I have ever attended and also the most friendly and accessible for a first time attendee. We got to hear from world class speakers and see some of Halifax in the process. We saw speakers like Drew Dudley experiment with a new format on stage that was totally captivating despite the fact that he didn't actually speak... it was a reminder of the art in what we do.

Congrats to Anders Boulanger and the Prairie Shield Chapter on winning the award for most new members in 2026! We're building such a strong chapter in this region and the learning events have continued to be stellar!

It was also lovely to get to attend this for the first time with my buddies Margaux Miller 🎤 and Nicole Dubé.

If your team is in a constant state of overwhelm and stress – it’s time to acknowledge something isn’t working. 

Even if your team is ‘succeeding’ when it comes to delivery, goals and KPI’s, if it’s coming at the expense of their wellbeing, it’s not a success.
 
There are always challenges at work. It’s part of what makes work interesting and gives us opportunities to grow and learn. But I don’t think work needs to be draining. It doesn't need to be hard or stressful all of the time.
 
Work isn't so hard if we run into a challenge but we have purpose connected to why overcoming that challenge matters.

Work isn't so hard if we run into a challenge but we feel supported by our team and our leaders.

Work isn't so hard when we feel empowered to own and tackle that challenge.

Work isn't so hard when we have the time and resources to intentionally tackle that challenge.
 
Work doesn’t have to be hard. It may be challenging at times, but it doesn’t have to be draining, lonely and demotivating. That shouldn't be the norm.
