A VP candidate walked away from a $280K offer.

Two weeks later, she proved “playing safe” is the real risk.  

She came to me as a Director. Strong track record. Clear VP potential.

A big brand posted a VP role.

Scope looked huge. Title looked shiny. Process dragged for 10 weeks.  

Panels. Presentations. Homework. Politics everywhere.

Final offer: $280K total.

After hundreds of Senior Manager & Director resumes each year, I use a simple 5-step “Impact Rewrite” process.

Clients who follow this process often double interview rates.

Here is how I do it with them.

Step 1: Pull raw responsibilities
• Copy bullets from past roles
• Keep every line task-based for now

Step 2: Find the main business lever
For each bullet, mark one lever:
• Revenue
• Cost
• Risk
• Customer or employee experience

Step 3: Attach a number
Use any real number you can find:
• % change
• Dollar value
• Volume or time
Numbers turn noise into proof.

Step 4: Use the formula
Action + lever + metric

For example:
“Led cross-functional project”
becomes
“Led cross-functional launch that grew ARR 18% & added $4.2M pipeline in 9 months”

Step 5: Compare with target Director or VP role
• Open a job description
• Scan each bullet on your resume
• Check match with scope, scale, levers in that role

2. "The market is bad right now."
TRUTH: Top talent moves in every market. While you hide in the weeds, your competition is taking the seats at the table.

3. "I have too much unvested equity to leave."
TRUTH: Calculate the hourly rate of your misery. Those options aren't worth your sanity or your health. And they can just be easily negotiated into the new role.

4. "My boss said promotions are coming next cycle."
TRUTH: A verbal promise is a corporate lie. If it’s not in writing, it’s a distraction tactic to keep the mule pulling the cart.

5. "I'm just grateful to have a job."
TRUTH: This scarcity mindset is exactly why they feel comfortable paying you 30% under market value.

Stop waiting for a lifeboat. 
The ship is sinking.

Until we turned her into the obvious external upgrade they could not ignore.  

Senior product leader. Six Director final rounds.  

Six times, the call came:  
“We went with an internal person.”  

She felt cursed.  
Strong resume, strong references, strong skills.  
No offers.

• “Here is how I traded speed vs risk with legal and compliance”  
• “Here is how we moved X metric over four quarters”  

Next panel. Global tech company. Two strong internal front‑runners.  

Offer went to her. Director title. Meaningful pay jump.  

Internal preference loses power when you speak risk, bets, and outcomes in the company’s own strategic language.

I'll never forget the dream job I thought I had locked down. And then ghosted. 


Four rounds of interviews. Met with the hiring manager twice. Presented to the team. 

Even had a final conversation with the VP where he said, "We're really excited about bringing you on board. You'll hear from us this week."

Four weeks later, No call. No email. Not even a generic rejection.

I followed up once. Then twice. Then realized I was chasing people who clearly didn't respect my time enough to send a two-sentence email.

I’ve had jobs with free lunches, gym memberships, game rooms, and happy hours.


You know what I never used? Most of them.

Because I was too busy commuting 90 minutes a day, sitting in an office, and pretending to look busy at 4:55pm on a Friday.

Now I work remotely. No free lunch. No ping pong table. No office perks.

Ghosting is becoming too common. But, we can avoid ghosting by coming up with a better strategy.


A hard truth I’ve learned from years as a career coach: 

Recruiter ghosting has reached epidemic proportions.

Recently, I worked with a client who told me he was ghosted 3 times in the span of 2 weeks after interviews.  

No feedback, no rejection email—nothing.

This isn't just frustrating—it's demoralizing. And it's happening at every level, from entry positions to executive roles.

I’ve come up with 3 strategies that dramatically reduce ghosting:

✅ 1 // Establish next steps DURING the interview. Don't leave without clarity on timeline and communication expectations. 

My clients who ask "What are the next steps in your decision process?" see less ghosting.

✅ 2 // Create meaningful connections beyond the hiring manager. Research and reach out to potential team members on LinkedIn before interviews. 

Candidates who connect with 2+ team members see higher response rates.

✅ 3 // Send a strategic follow-up 48 hours post-interview that adds unexpected value. 

One client attached a one-page solution to a problem mentioned during the interview and received a response within hours after a week of silence.

The unfortunate reality is we can't control employer behavior, but we can control our approach.

My client Jessica came to me after being passed over for a promotion three times in two years.

Same manager every time. Same excuse every time.

“You’re not quite ready yet.”

Meanwhile, she was training the people getting promoted over her. Running projects her manager took credit for.

She’d spent two years trying to prove herself to people who’d already decided not to see her value.

“Maybe I’m just not as good as I think I am,” she told me.

I’ve had clients stay in jobs that were slowly draining them for years.


Not because they loved the work.
Not because the money was life changing.

Because they were scared of what leaving would say about them.

“What will people think?”
“Will it look bad on my resume?”
“Maybe it gets better if I just give it more time.”

It never gets better.

I’ve never once had a client tell me they regretted leaving a toxic job.

Not one.

But I’ve had dozens tell me they stayed two, three, four years longer than they should have. And every single one said the same thing.

“I wish I had left sooner.”

Here’s what I want you to hear today:

Quitting is not failure.

Staying somewhere that chips away at your confidence every single day, that’s the real failure. Not to you. To the people and opportunities waiting on the other side of that decision.

The job market has convinced us that loyalty means endurance. That leaving makes us look weak or uncommitted or difficult.

It doesn’t.

It makes you someone who knows their worth.

Your career is not a prison sentence.

You are allowed to leave what isn’t working. You are allowed to find something better. You are allowed to choose yourself.

The only thing you’re not allowed to do is stay somewhere that doesn’t value you and pretend that’s ok.

It’s not ok.

And you already know that.

Not because they were happy.

-Another year going through the motions.

My client Emma stayed at her toxic job 4 years because a recruiter told her "job hopping looks bad."

I almost didn’t start my freelance business. Basically out of “fear of failure.”


I told myself I wasn’t ready. 
That I needed more experience. 
More credentials. 

More proof that I was qualified enough to help people.

So I waited.

And while I waited I watched people with less experience than me build something.

One day I got tired of waiting to feel ready.

So I started anyway.

On paper it made sense. 
Benefits were solid. Stable income.

She kept telling herself just one more year.

One more year became four.

By the time she reached out to me, she wasn’t just looking for a new job. She was trying to find herself again.

We came up with an action plan:
