Engineering students design and build earthquake-resistant towers and test them on an actual seismic shake table. Their structures sway, bend, stress-test, and still hold their form under real quake simulation.

They learn physics, engineering, teamwork, design, failure, iteration, all in one exercise.

This is education. Not mugging. Not rote learning. Not “finish the syllabus.” Actual skills + real-world problem-solving.

The first time I visited Varanasi - this is what a boatman told me, 

“Kashi mein shiv in Mandiro mein nahi, yahan, hamare beech, Hamaare saath nav chalate hai, Subah ki chay aur puri Bhaaji, shiv ke saath hi toh hoti hai. Aapke liye shiv, Wahan Upar (pointing upwards) Bhagwan hai, hamare liye, woh yahan hai, hamare bachon ko school Tak surakshit pohochane ka zimma uthate hai” 

(Translation: In Kashi, Shiva isn’t only in the temples, He’s here, among us, rowing the boat with us. Our morning tea and puri-bhaaji… that’s with Shiva too. For you, Shiva is God up there (pointing upwards). For us, He’s right here - taking responsibility for getting our children safely to school.)

It is but obvious I have gone 14 times after that but, the aesthetics with which each individual, residing in banaras talks about the life there, is something no mumbaikar or Delhi-ite would understand. 

Every time I visit Kashi, I feel most of us somehow lost the plot. Between making money, achieving our ambitions, finding the right kind of wallpaper for our new flat, we forgot to zoom out and look at the nature of this brief piece of life, we have no macro perspective of our pacing lives. Banaras is all macro - it doesn’t care about your career, your PHD or your CTC, it cares about three things: Birth, Death and Liberation. 

What arrogance we carry without even noticing it.

An MNC Managing Director, three decades into his career, armed with quarterly targets, leadership frameworks, and a vocabulary full of “vision 2026.” One weekend, he finds himself standing at Manikarnika Ghat in Banaras, where death has no PR filter and no corporate hierarchy. Bodies burn continuously, kings, labourers, CEOs, saints, all equalised by the same fire.

And in that heat, something hits him.

His suit, his title, his carefully crafted legacy deck… all of it ends as the same black, indifferent ash rising into the sky. Worse, if part of the body doesn’t fully burn in those five relentless hours, the doms simply toss it into the Ganges. No ceremony. No leadership offsite. No “vision statement.”

Just… gone.

Kashi grounds you. Kashi reminds you. Kashi shows you your future. Sometimes in wanting more all the time, we forget that we are mere mortals on borrowed time, 

Kashi is that lender who calls you up in the midst of deepest, darkest nights, to remind you of this.

What an alarm clock it is.

This apple a day will not keep the doctor away.

But it will definitely keep your savings away. And that’s one of the many reasons a working professional who wants to actually make money and keep it eventually feels the need to leave Mumbai.

Here’s why:

1/ Maharashtra was the state with the highest iPhone sales in 2024, contributing over 25% of India’s total iPhone purchases.
That’s roughly 3 million iPhones out of ~12 million shipped nationally.

Now layer this with income data:

— Only 8–10% of Maharashtra’s working population (around 5–6 million people) earns over ₹1 lakh a month.

— The average iPhone costs ₹75,000–₹80,000.

— And 65–70% of all iPhones in India are bought on EMIs/loans, mostly by people earning below ₹50,000 per month, driven heavily by “aspirational” pressure.

So the point isn’t the iPhone.

It’s the fact that you’re being seduced into paying for things you don’t even personally aspire to… but the people around you do, with money they don’t actually have.

Let’s talk about the ‘illusion of progress’ - In India today, about 10 out of every 1,000 people work gigs.

That’s a good thing right? 

> Well - 55–75% of India’s gig/platform workers are blue-collar location-based (drivers, delivery, couriers)

> barely 20% are intellectual workers - writers, designers etc. Even this number is going to be decreasing for the following reason. (Read number 2)

1. India’s gig economy today is mostly “blue-labour on a platform.” What we see right now is the platformization of existing manual and service jobs, like delivering food or driving people. Platforms give some benefits like more stable payouts, better tracking, and sometimes insurance, but they do not automatically increase the worker’s skill or productivity.

2. The Mobility Trap. Because most workers are in delivery and transport, the system depends on large numbers of workers, not on specialized or high-cognitive talent. So, there is job mobility, you can join easily - but very limited upward socio-economic mobility compared to traditional knowledge jobs like coding, writing, engineering, design, or finance.

👉 We aren’t a gig economy - we are becoming a blue collared economy. 

👉 The British pushed India a hundred years behind. This delivery-heavy gig economy will push us another fifty.

I tried understanding why India forces banks to lock so much of their money. The answer is SLR. And it explains a lot.

SLR (Statutory Liquidity Ratio) is a rule in India that tells banks to keep 18% of all deposits in government-approved safe assets.
So if a bank gets ₹100, it can’t lend the full amount. 

It must keep ₹18 aside.

This rule was created decades ago to make sure banks always had a safety buffer.

But here is the surprising part:

- The US doesn’t do this anymore.
- America removed its reserve ratio for most deposits.
- Banks there don’t have to keep a fixed percentage of deposits locked away.

They follow a different system based on capital and risk checks, not forced deposit parking.

This means:

- Indian banks have less room to lend.
- US banks have more flexibility.
- Our credit growth slows because too much money stays stuck in low-yield assets.
- Businesses and startups get less access to loans.

Experts say India wants to be a fast-growing economy, but we still use old rules that restrict how banks operate. SLR doesn’t stop fraud. It doesn’t improve accountability. It just limits how much money enters the real economy.

If India wants stronger lending and faster growth, it needs to rethink whether the 18% SLR still makes sense.

I’m still learning, but the more I read, the more I realise that some of our financial rules haven’t kept up with the goals we talk about.

What happens when a robot becomes cheaper than an employee?

Tesla’s humanoid robot Optimus is now learning real, everyday tasks, sorting items, folding cloth, lifting objects, and assembling parts.

Not a demo. Actual task learning.

And the timing is important.

— The humanoid robot market was $1.8 billion in 2023.

— It’s projected to hit $13.8 billion by 2030.

— Tesla aims to price Optimus below a small car, making it accessible even for mid-scale companies.

This means the disruption won’t just hit the US or Europe.

It will reach India, and faster than we think.

— Manufacturing: 3.5 human workers can potentially be replaced by 1 robot (due to 24/7 shifts).

— Logistics: Moving boxes and organizing warehouses.

— Elderly Care: With global labor shortages, robots may soon be the primary caregivers for the aging population.

Tesla aims to sell Optimus for roughly $20,000.

If a factory can buy a worker for $20k that works 24/7 without breaks, the math changes overnight.

I’d say McKinsey & Company.

1/ They built their own generative-AI platform called Lilli, which searches and summarises their internal knowledge base of 100000+ documents and interviews.  

2/ Over 70% of their 45,000 employees now use Lilli routinely.  
Use cases include: drafting PowerPoint slides, summarising research, finding internal experts, and preparing client-meetings. People save roughly 20-30% of their time on routine tasks.  

For a consulting firm whose value relies on knowledge, insight and problem-solving, using AI to free up time from mundane work means more focus on strategic value for clients.

👉 The largest conglomerates...when asked about ‘AI’ - think about their ‘knowledge foundation’- the documents, frameworks, client-histories, playbooks they have built. If they can put AI on that, they change their operational model, not just their interface.

The world is going to see far more suicides and serious mental health issues in 2026. India, specifically, is heading for something devastating.

You don’t need statistics to see it coming. Just look around.

3 fundamental shifts are destroying the mental health foundation that once protected us:

1. We’ve poisoned our bodies, and our minds followed.

India’s culture understood something profound: mental health is inseparable from physical health. Home-cooked dal, sabzi, rot, this kept us alive. 

Research confirms what our grandmothers knew: people consuming ultra-processed foods several times daily are three times more likely to struggle with serious mental health issues. Depression risk increases 50%.

Thanks to Swiggy, Zomato, and globalization, the same forces that destroyed the West’s relationship with food are now conquering India, one delivery at a time.

2. Social media has fractured our perception of time itself.

Watch someone scroll through reels. They’ve lost track of time. But it’s worse than that.

You see someone’s success at forty, and at twenty, you’re devastated, convinced you’ve failed. You don’t understand that person had twenty years you haven’t lived yet.

This temporal distortion creates pathological urgency. Young people rush to achieve everything immediately, before they’ve developed the emotional infrastructure to handle any of it.

WHO data shows problematic social media use among adolescents jumped from 7% in 2018 to 11% in 2022. Teens using social media over three hours daily face twice the risk of negative mental health outcomes.

3. We’ve made sexuality a recreational experiment instead of what it is, profound psychological entanglement.

When I hear sixteen-year-olds casually “experimenting” with sexuality, I don’t see liberation. I see young people being handed dynamite and told it’s a toy.

Sexuality creates bonds, chemical, emotional, neurological, that don’t dissolve because you’ve decided the experiment is over. The brain at sixteen isn’t equipped for this. The prefrontal cortex doesn’t fully develop until the mid-twenties.

Casual promiscuity rewires your capacity for attachment, for trust, for intimacy. Some scars are permanent.

I realize this observation lacks data. It’s based on what I’ve witnessed.

Bad food destroys your body’s ability to regulate mood. Social media destroys your perception of time. Premature sexuality destroys your ability to form stable attachments.

Put them together: a generation simultaneously depressed, anxious, and emotionally unmoored, convinced they’re running out of time to achieve things they’re not equipped to handle.

We already know the solutions. They’re just inconvenient.

Cook real food. Limit screens. Protect childhood.

The mystique of tacit knowledge.

January 2007. Macworld Conference.

1. Jobs stood on stage, about to unveil the iPhone. At the time, the world was dominated by Blackberrys with tiny keyboards. Every competitor was using styluses. The entire tech industry believed physical keyboards were non-negotiable for smartphones. ﻿﻿

But Jobs saw something different.

2. Years earlier, he had envisioned a device people could interact with using their fingers, not a stylus. When his team showed him a multi-touch prototype, he had an epiphany: “My God, we can build a phone out of this.” ﻿
﻿
The decision to launch a phone without a physical keyboard was the biggest call they had to make. His team experimented with membrane keyboards. Engineers pushed back. Critics would later call it crazy. ﻿﻿

But Jobs trusted something deeper than data. Something you can’t find in spreadsheets or focus groups.

He trusted his tacit knowledge.

3. Tacit knowledge isn’t something you learn in a classroom or read in a manual. It’s the deep understanding you accumulate through years of experience, the pattern recognition, the intuition, the gut feeling that whispers when logic screams the opposite.

It’s information gained through personal experience that’s difficult to articulate or share with others. 

You can’t write it down. 

You can’t fully explain it. 

But it’s often the most valuable knowledge you possess. ﻿

- You can work 80-hour weeks. 

- You can be the most disciplined person in the room. 

- You can follow every productivity hack.

But without tacit knowledge, without that accumulated wisdom that comes from deep experience, reflection, and trusting your intuition, you’re missing the secret ingredient that separates good from legendary.

The new metric for AI apps to focus on is not DAU. It’s DDU.

Daily Durable Users. Not Daily active users.

— DAU shows attention. DDU shows value.
Someone could open your app and leave, still counted as DAU.

— Durable users come back because your product is part of their workflow.
When someone needs your app to think, work, write, code, design, or produce, that’s durability.

For AI consumer apps, the challenge is not just acquisition but making the app indispensable so users stick.

With AI apps, people often open the app out of:

- novelty
- curiosity
- hype
- FOMO

DAU counts those users as “active” even if they don’t care about the tool.

So DAU is a visibility metric, not a value metric.

A ‘Freakonomics’ style of content does really well.

Observing a thing that everyone does but no one questions + your authentic opinion on it. 

We’re living in a time where there is a heavy inflow of very mediocre, factual content that has no story telling all thanks to GPT. LLM models are great at giving data, stats, the latest case study or whatever is happening around the country but to add a personal touch to it is largely missing. 

No effort is being put into crafting a story out of facts that have been presented. 

For eg:

1. From buying a fridge to investing in stocks:
Google → Instagram → Reviews → YouTube → Ask mom or cousin → Buy.

2. Most Indians don’t uninstall apps — they just stop using them.

Great for MAUs. Terrible for retention analysis.

3. Indians overshare financial struggles… but hide financial wins. People talk openly about EMI pressure but keep promotions, bonuses, and raises quiet.

These are some anecdotal observations, but making a story out of these, using this data, is art.

“Just because you suffer, doesn’t mean you’re founder material my friend.”

I remember telling this to a friend the other day. I cracked up when he told me that building his content marketing agency is like ‘eating glass and staring into an abyss.’

It felt performative because we were enjoying a spaghetti whilst he was saying so. 

This ‘fake startup’ syndrome is very real. 

Over the last few years, the act of ‘starting up’ has gained a lot of hype and with the obvious positives, there have been hysterical negatives. 

Some symptoms:

1) You aren’t big enough to have a culture problem.

Culture becomes important when the number of employees grow.

When you need 200 minds to move in the same direction, you need a shared catalyst, that catalyst is culture. But if you’ve got two people sitting at the same desk, you don’t need culture. You need coffee, instant noodles, and the DND button on your iPhone.

2) The fantasy of suffering. 

You’d be surprised to know that many founders who are building something or the other, aren’t suffering as much as you think they are. 

Just because you build something, it doesn’t mean suffering is a byproduct of it. I know so many peaceful, happy founders who don’t wish to IPO but are happy with where they are. Few lakhs a month, or crores and they are good. 

Correlation is not causation. 

Looking like a duffle bag with a long face has nothing to do with the success of your startup. 

3) Posting about your ‘thing’ is very different from selling your ‘thing.’

Talking about your startup online is great. It builds awareness, personality, community, even some curiosity.

But it is not the same as building a business. Business happens when you sell, when there is revenue. Period. 

That’s the only metric. Sales. 

You aren’t big enough to follow any other metric. (At least in the beginning)

4) Mistaking networking for execution.

Events are fun. Panels are fun. Selfies with famous founders are fun.

But none of it replaces sitting down, shutting up, and doing the actual work.

Sales is the solution to every (most) business problem(s). Yet people choose to ignore this because selling isn’t easy. Instead of battling the dragon, many are playing catch with the kittens, thinking they are learning how to fight. 

Stop building a fake startup, it’s very painful. Building a real one is much easier and much more fulfilling.

The courage it takes to live well has nothing to do with how much you ‘learn’ or ‘educate’ yourself of the world around you. 

Look around you, the people suffering around us aren’t 5th grade pass outs. They’re well-educated, knowledgeable individuals who know how many grams of protein they need per kilogram of body weight.

Look around you, the people getting heart attacks, those committing suicide, those who are perpetually on psychiatric medications are not those who spent decades waking up at the same time, walking to the same bank job, sitting for seven hours, and returning home through the same lanes to the same predictable routine.

Look around you, the people struggling to get out of bed every morning aren’t the middle-aged men who never migrated to cities like Mumbai or Delhi - the ones who still sit by the ghats of Varanasi, sipping their evening tea and living life at a slower, steadier pace. The ones who can’t are increasingly in their 20s, people whose bodies function perfectly, who have two meals a day, who have people who care for them, and who have far more comfort and freedom than the generations before them ever did.

Look around you. The world promised you a lot of things, and those who believed it are suffering. Those who refused it became sages, and those who were fortunate enough to avoid those promises, are blessed enough to go to their terraces and watch the stars twinkling.
