Starting at NAB on the graduate program of 2001 for six intense months, I was exposed to all jobs within the bank from teller, documentation, filing, home loans, business loans and transactional banking. After successfully completing the graduate program I was appointed to Business Banking Officer at Marrickville. 

Climbing the ranks to Credit Analyst, Relationship Manager in Corporate, Business Banking Manager In Custom Business and finally completing my tenure at the bank as Senior Business Banking Manager. 

Ten years came and went, and on ten years and one day, long service leave was taken and I decided to see what else was out there. 

In my last role at nab I was responsible for the management of a portfolio of medium to large sized commercial enterprises with turnover ranging between $10m and $100m+ per annum. Portfolio size was $125m+ in both deposits in lending.

•	Sales/Revenue: The main KPI in this role. To promote the bank’s products through to existing clients, in order to achieve revenue, specialist, lending & deposit targets. Portfolio generated $4m+ in underlying profit per annum. 
•	Maintain and Develop Relationships: with current clients & commercial lending introducers (Brokers, Solicitors, and Accountants). Manage and increase portfolio of introducers through proactive calling, the attendance of industry events and through referrals. Ensure that the relationship with both internal & external clients is developed & nurtured through efficient service and clarity of process & policy.

Senior Business Banking Manager 

Embarking on my entrepreneurial journey at the tender age of 11, I discovered my flair for business by selling avocados harvested from my backyard tree to the local fruit shop. The excitement of filling my backpack with green treasures and making the three-block trek to Bay Street was not just about making a sale; it was the initiation into a world of negotiation and understanding the dynamics of commerce.

While the avocado venture was fruitful, it also taught me valuable lessons. One defining moment occurred when the shop owner proposed paying me less per avocado—an early lesson in the concept of purchasing power. This experience laid the foundation for a business mindset that would evolve and flourish in the years to come.

This realisation led to the creation of Peak Capital, a venture dedicated to specialising in Commercial Lending. Redom Syed - Mortgage Broker

Breaking: Commonwealth Bank just sent shockwaves through the investor lending market.

From tomorrow, CBA will only allow new trust lending for active CBA customers, everyone else is cut off.

This move comes less than 24 hours after Australian Prudential Regulation Authority publicly warned that it is “closely monitoring any build-up of domestic vulnerabilities, particularly in the housing market.”

It was only two weeks ago Macquarie Group made a similar move, blocking all trust lending.

These changes are reflective of a very targeted lending regulator, making a surgical, targeted change...zeroing in on the riskiest pockets of lending.

So why is trust lending viewed as risky?

It's the way they’re used:

Here’s the issue in a nutshell:

→ Under current lending rules, a 3% assessment buffers apply to ANY mortgage debts.  This is designed to protect borrowers and the system, ensuring everyone can afford their mortgages in any rate environment.

 → When utilising trusts, property investors can get creative and find ways to ensure that any existing debts inside that trust often aren’t stressed tested at all.

 → When obtaining a loan in a new trust, the bank checks whether the borrower is meeting repayments today in any 'existing trusts', not whether they can survive a stress-tested environment.

 → Borrowers can thereby 'recycle' trusts here, opening a new one when they are tapped out, and find ways to circumnavigate the 3% mortgage stress test on their existing trust.

 →  The risk here is investor borrowers are not adequately 'stress tested' and can push themselves too far. 

In a market where 40% of all loans are going to investors, and a material chunk of those are running through company/trust structures, you can see why Commonwealth Bank & Macquarie Group moved quickly.

My favourite part of the job?

Playing coach

Getting into the weeds of what it takes to thrive as a broker, sharing everything I know and trying to level others up.

Lately I’ve been flying city to city, working with our team, getting them uncomfortbale in front of the cam.

The lessons:
- tell stories that make people feel
- share who you are, not what you know 
- just do it. Embrace discomfort…confidence will come 

Oddly enough…being ‘cringe’ for years and years is the lesson I’m sharing.

Embrace the cringe…the sound of your own voice…the weirdness of putting yourself out there

(Or in my case, the annoying gray hair that refuses to go away!)

Eventually you go from being the person being laughed at…to the person teaching others how to do it.

Execution > Planning. 99% of the time.

Most of us build mental barriers around the things we want to do.

“I’m too busy.”
“It’s not for me.”
“I’ll start tomorrow.”

What you’re really saying is: “I don’t want to get uncomfortable.”

Last year, I’d spend days preparing, thinking, planning… just to film one YouTube video.

And I still flopped. Over and over.

Embarrassing, low ROI, zero impact.

Now?

I can film three videos in 90 minutes. Minimal prep. 10x the views. And it fills our sales team’s diary for a week.

Thinking about doing what I wanted achieved nothing.

(Just like reading 12 self-help books and taking no action..)

The lesson?

Stop thinking.

Start doing.

Great leaders don’t rely on one style. 

They switch gears fast.

When I first stepped into this gig, the situation called for unity…bringing everyone together and creating one direction.

So i went about sharing stories, presenting visions with the aim of drawing connection with us, and where we are heading. 

Some days, it calls for strength: setting standards, drawing lines, making it clear what’s acceptable and what isn’t.

And sometimes, it’s none of that.

It’s simply being present. Listening. Showing I care.

Leadership isn’t about being one fixed version of yourself.

It’s knowing which version the moment needs.

My take out?

Intelligence isn’t about knowing things…

It’s about being adaptable…reading the room and adjusting quickly.

I’m not good enough…yet.

Most people would never admit that publicly.

But that’s exactly how I feel.

This was my first year leading large teams.  Somehow I’m leading 120+ people inside a year. The job is wildly different to a year ago.

Along the way, I made a lot of “scaling mistakes.”

Here are the top 3:

1. I hired too fast sometimes 

Pro tip: make the person your hiring sweat a little with some really hard technical questions or exercises…pressure makes diamonds!

2. I attracted some bad apples, the wrong kind of energy 🍎 

Just get rid of these people quickly…your team will thank you and your better off protecting the whole than the individual

3. Betted on the ‘shiny new thing’

Just focus on your plan…opportunities come at you in a 100 directions. Say no to 99 of them.

The big positive is…the above hasn’t really slowed us down.  

I’ve just reacted, reflected and kept on going.

Today we settle over $100m a month & reach over 1million eyeballs monthly with our content.

So my takeout?

“I’m not good enough, yet” isn’t insecurity.

It’s my fuel.

To be that bit better than yesterday.

The mindset that keeps me hungry.

And most importantly, my team growing.

APRA acted like the schoolyard bully today.

Shout, scream.  Try to scare.

But actually…

Do nothing.

Today’s announcement is just that.

From Feb 2026, banks can only issue 20% of all new loans where debt is >6× the applicant’s income.

Well…

BREAKING: APRA’s New Lending Cap Targets Property Investors

When I started broking, I was scared of failure.

My first 90 days were basically me vs. my own brain.

Every morning on the way to work, I’d have a self-help book or podcast playing. 

Not because I wanted to become a “mindset guy”…but because I was preparing my mind for something hard. 

This is where most new brokers tap out.

They don’t lose because they’re not smart enough or experienced enough.

They lose because they never built the belief to stay in the fight.

But here’s the part people get wrong: Mindset work is just the warm-up.

Don’t spend months “preparing” for a moment you never actually step into.

Reading self help books doesn’t earn you a dime.  Applying it does. 

At some point you have to move.

You have to pick up the phone.

You have to act before you feel ready.

That’s what actually builds confidence.

Get your mind right early…

Then stop thinking and start doing.

Am I taking enough risk for my business to survive in 5 years time?

This question circled my brain this evening after attending an AI event hosted by Lendi Group, where they shared their journey building with AI.  

Here’s what I learned:

- the pace of change is rapid, but we are still very early on in our change journey 

- take more risk, experiment, and fail very quickly

- ask yourself when building with AI: what can you do today with AI that wasn’t possible yesterday. 

- don’t use AI for AIs sake, there’s plenty of automation and technology pre AI that remains and will remain incredibly valuable.

There’s not many events I leave with more questions than answers…and I think that was exactly the point.

To challenge our beliefs, to inspire new ways of thinking.
