I’m the CEO and Principal Consultant at DevSquad a boutique consulting firm that specializes in strategizing, designing, and developing digital products. (most SaaS Products). I’ve led the build of 100+ software products. This includes SaaS products for bootstrapper founders, VC-funded fast-growing startups, and big enterprises like ADP, Box, and the US ski team.

The success of my consulting firm (DevSquad), is allowing me to bootstrap my second SaaS product. (I sold my first SaaS years ago).

I recently started a Podcast. my goal with this podcast is to learn from SaaS founders so that I can become better at building SaaS products for myself, and my clients, and hopefully have the podcast listeners learn along with me.

I’ve seen nearly everything there is to see with health plans and life insurance since obtaining an insurance license in 2011. I joined USI in 2025 because they aligned with my values and give me the tools I need to do my job well: guiding clients on how to control their costs.

I believe in ethical selling, pounding the pavement and the phones, teamwork, and finding the best clients to help. I believe in creativity. I'm not afraid to look at every possible solution, in or out of the box. 

I believe healthcare is fundamentally broken, and I do everything in my human power to put control back into the hands of my clients and their employees. 

I understand the cycle of healthcare in the current environment in America incentivizes driving prices upward year over year. I know where the carriers hide fees, how the hospital networks and PCP consortiums stay within their networks only, how simple things like labs and x-rays can absolutely demolish plan renewals and costs, and how to get those things under control with the right design and incentives. 

If I'm adding you or reaching out, chances are I've done my research and I know I can help. There's also a really good chance I've just reached out to be friends, because people are cool and I want to have a strong network to help my clients however they need it.

Had a sales cold call that went nearly 30 mins recently. By all measurements, my corporate standards would mark it as a true first meeting/discovery call.

At the end, the guy on the other end (  a CFO of a decent-sized local corp, mind you) admitted he was bored because it was Friday, he was sitting at home with nothing to do, and he felt like talking with me but had no intention of setting a meeting.

😑😑😑

I was feeling petty… so I asked him what his time was worth. It was pretty decent, about $300 per hour. 

He was like “what about you?”

I gave him my answer. 

And then I did the math about the money he’d wasted between his worth and mine, and notified him I’d be sending him a bill. 

He laughed. 

I sent the bill. 

And to his credit, he paid it. 

Followed up with an email that said this: 

“Dennis, thanks for the time you took to teach me how the insurance carrier is taking advantage of us. Sorry for screwing with you; I paid your bill. I would be mad is someone did that to our salespeople here, too. 

“I’m going to look into this further with my broker. If I don’t like the answers he gives me, you’re my first call. Feel free to follow up in a week or two.”

Wild what happens when you stand up for yourself and draw hard lines.

I keep our house as analog as possible. 

No smart locks.

No garage apps. 

No computer fridge. 

No touchscreen toasters.

No sprinklers being controlled from my phone.

I even have a heckin-basic washer and dryer. 

I am Apple integrated where it makes sense: watch, phones, iPad, Apple TV, Mac. 

I do like my Nest thermostat. 

I have a couple of cameras, and I love my doorbell cam. 

But dude…. Not everything needs a screen, a mic, a camera, and my GOSH COULD WE MAKE EVERYTHING STOP SINGING FOR THE LIFE OF ME!!!!

We are at the moral ceiling of healthcare deductibles, co-pays, and out-of-pocket maxes. 

Simply raising the deductible to combat increases won't work another 3-5 years from now. 

One of the best moves you can make now to combat this is to look at self-funding your company health plan (where the premiums go straight to claims) and put direct primary and specialist care, as well as a covered Rx forumlary ($0 drugs) — subscription-based, non insurance-paid relationships —  and put these subscriptions at the center of your plan, and then incentivizing your employees to fully utilize them at their first line of care.

Reducing the claims that hit plan is the very strongest move you can make to get this under control.

It starts with DPC.
