🔥  Spring Boot 4.0 dropped yesterday! - Here's What's New for Testing 🧪 

Spring Boot 4.0 and Spring Framework 7 bring significant improvements to our testing setup. 

Here are the top three changes:

• RestTestClient - A modern replacement for TestRestTemplate with a fluent API for testing REST endpoints 🍃 
• Automatic Context Pausing - Cached test contexts now pause when inactive, eliminating resource conflicts and reducing memory usage ⏸️ 
• JUnit 6 Support – Seamless migration from JUnit 5 with enhanced null safety and better support for nested test classes 🧪 

Other notable updates include bean override support for non-singleton beans, Testcontainers 2.0 integration, and a new modular dependency structure.

The migration is straightforward, especially with OpenRewrite recipes available for automation (check out Thomas Vitale's post from yesterday 👀 )

Spring Framework 7.0: Application Context Pause during Tests ⏸️

Continuing my Spring Boot 4.0 sneak peek series with a game-changing testing-related feature from Spring Framework 7.0! 🎯

Spring Test's hidden gem: The TestContext context caching caches application contexts for reuse during tests, drastically reducing build time when configured correctly 🚤 

The problem before Spring Framework 7:

Cached contexts stayed fully active in the LRU cache - meaning scheduled jobs, message listeners, and background threads kept running across multiple contexts simultaneously 🔢 

This could cause:

🔄 Multiple scheduled jobs interfering with shared resources
💾 Database conflicts
🐛 Unpredictable test behavior

See an example with a scheduled logger in the picture below.

Prior to Spring Framework 7, the scheduled task logs a message for each active application context.

This can result in conflicts when multiple contexts are running concurrently! 😱

The solution in Spring Framework 7.0 🍃 

Contexts are now paused when cached and reactivated when needed. All components implementing Lifecycle or SmartLifecycle are stopped until the context is used again by a test.

The result: Clean, isolated tests with no background interference while contexts sit in the cache. ✨

This ensures your test suite remains fast and reliable!

Clemens walked us through how AI is shaking up code and product security - the good and the bad. He shared some recent research on AI-generated code security and how well AI can actually spot vulnerabilities in existing applications.

Talk 2: Hands-on LLM Security by Florian Teutsch 💻 

Florian showed us the typical ways LLMs can be exploited - prompt injection, jailbreaking, RAG poisoning - all through a live interactive demo. Watching how easily an LLM can be tricked was both entertaining and eye-opening.

The audience was really engaged with lots of questions and people sharing their own experiences 🤗 

Definitely took away some valuable insights.

The migration from JUnit 5 to JUnit 6 is much smoother than the 4 → 5 transition. Expect minimal breaking changes and straightforward upgrades.

Testcontainers 2.0 🐳

Major cleanup incoming:

• ❌ JUnit 4 support removed
• 📦 New module structure: postgresql becomes testcontainers-postgresql
• Update your dependencies accordingly!

Bean Overrides for Non-Singleton Beans 🔄

Spring Framework 7.0 extends bean override capabilities beyond singletons. More flexibility when mocking and overriding beans with different scopes in your tests.

Updated Testing Libraries 📚

Spring Boot 4.0 ships with the latest versions:

Bottom line: While Spring Boot 4.0 brings breaking changes, the testing ecosystem is evolving in the right direction - more modular & more powerful.

Five Common Spring Boot Testing Mistakes 🔎
 
When I started testing Spring Boot applications, I made every mistake imaginable 🍃 
 
Slow test suites, brittle tests, and hours of debugging - all because nobody told me the fundamentals that would have saved me countless headaches.
 
Here are 5 things I wish I knew when I started testing Spring Boot applications:
 
#1: You Already Have a Testing Swiss Army Knife
 
 Every Spring Boot project comes with spring-boot-starter-test—a complete testing toolbox including JUnit 5, Mockito, AssertJ, and more. I spent weeks researching testing libraries when everything I needed was already there, perfectly integrated and version-managed.
 
#2: @SpringBootTest Is Not Your Default Choice
 
 I used to slap @SpringBootTest on every test. Big mistake. This loads your entire application context - like starting your car's engine just to test the radio. Save it for true integration tests where you need the full context.
 
#3: Slice Tests Are Your Secret Weapon
 
 Spring Boot offers focused testing with slice annotations: @WebMvcTest for controllers, @DataJpaTest for repositories, @JsonTest for JSON handling. These test only what you need, making your tests faster and more reliable.
 
#4: Context Caching Can Make or Break Performance
 
 When you mix @SpringBootTest with different @MockBean configurations, you create unique contexts that can't be cached. This turns a 10-second test suite into a 10-minute nightmare.
 
#5: JUnit 4 vs JUnit 5 Mixing Is Dangerous
 
 Copying code from Stack Overflow without checking JUnit versions leads to incompatible annotations (@Before vs @BeforeEach, @RunWith vs @ExtendWith). Pick one version and stick with it.
 
These insights transformed my testing approach from frustrating to joyful.
