I'm not (just) a product marketer! (part 3 in the series)

Leadership at home first for the win.  I’m a proud father of (adult) twins and a grateful husband to an amazing wife. Building a strong family has been the most challenging and rewarding leadership experiences of my life. It teaches you quickly that authority without trust goes nowhere, and that listening is often more important than being right.  Sounds like the life of a #PMM!

Beyond listening, learning how to prioritize conversations with your kids (at any age) over other demands, can be a tough one.  I am pretty sure I'm not the only parent to ever sought to avoid a challenging chat with my kids and used work as an excuse.  And - understanding how and when to shape conversations with the right messages to three very different audiences and walk out unscathed - sometimes miracles occur.  😁   Sometimes. 

Family life sharpened my ability to communicate with empathy, adapt to different personalities, and tell stories that connect rather than divide. Raising kids as a team really reinforced the concept that leadership isn’t about control, it’s about creating environments where people feel seen, supported, and motivated to grow.  About having the chats late at night, early in the morning - and at times, breaking one message into two very different conversations to manage the differences between a teen son and teen daughter.  

Those lessons translate directly into how I build teams, mentor leaders, and create messaging that resonates with real humans instead of abstract personas.  Paying attention to the subtleties that make us different, appealing to what motivated my kids, recognizing my wife for ALL that she did to create a great family - those are leadership lessons that last.  ✔️ 

And the great thing - 30 yrs of marriage later, and two fantastic kids who are independent and doing well, regularly call and seek our thoughts - we feel we did something right.  Kinda like a product launch that really brings in the attention and leads - hard to push them out of the door, and wonderful to see the results.

I'm not (just) a product marketer - the series wrap-up.  Or is it...?  😎 

I’ve trained Brazilian Jiu Jitsu for nearly 19 years and taught it for more than 15, earning my black belt along the way. Jiu Jitsu is a constant lesson in humility. You spend a lot of time failing, adapting, and learning to stay calm in physically and mentally uncomfortable situations. Progress is slow, nonlinear, and earned, not given.

A core tenent in BJJ is learning how to be comfortable in uncomfortable situations.  Having a 250lb person trying to smash, choke, bend arms/legs in the wrong direction and staying calm while you move to a better situation - can be intimidating.  But - there's also a tremendous trust that gets established, as we want to both protect and improve our grappling partners.  One of my favorite memories - a few years back I was going for a final job interview, and shared with one of instructor friends that I was a little nervous about it.  He said 'Hey, it might be tough, but at least he's not going to be choking you."    I survived the interview 😁 and got the job.

As I shared on a comment to Jonathan Pipek 🔱 - I also carry over a philosphy around fail forward to how I approach training, teaching and business.  We all make mistakes, but it's what we do with them that matters.  And - like each time we 'tap out' in Jiu Jitsu, it's one less time we'll make that same mistake.  So - it's less of a failure and more a step forward in learning.  

That mindset shows up everywhere in my professional life. I’m comfortable experimenting, learning constantly, and failing forward when something doesn’t work as hoped. I believe deeply in teaching - not just directing - and in helping others discover their own path to improvement. 

Jiu Jitsu also taught me how powerful storytelling can be when it’s rooted in lived experience. Whether I’m explaining a concept on the mat or positioning a product in the market, I care about telling a story that helps people see what’s possible for them on the other side of the struggle.

Thank you for reading along with my series - I have really appreciated the comments and thoughts - and allowing me to share a bit more about my life.  I encourage you to do the same!  I'm big on looking at the stories and experiences that have shaped people and see how they have gotten where they are. I’m not (just) a Product Marketer.

That’s the headline, but it’s not a gimmick. It’s coming out of some great holiday reflections of how I got here and why I work the way I do.  😎 

Before #productmarketing became my focus within the broader context of Marketing, I was shaped by experiences that had nothing to do with frameworks, launches, or messaging decks - and everything to do with accountability, trust, pressure, and people. I’ve led teams when the risks were real and in your face. I’ve learned how to ask hard questions without breaking trust. I’ve built something that lasts - at home, on teams, and in communities. And I’ve spent nearly two decades deliberately putting myself in uncomfortable situations to learn how growth actually happens.

👉 Those experiences didn’t go away when I focused on product marketing. They became the foundation of how I approach it. How I think strategically, and focus on buyers as humans, not personas. How I navigate ambiguity, conflict, and change. How I build teams that collaborate instead of compete. How I stay calm when plans go off the rails and man - they often do.

Over the next few weeks, I’m going to share parts of my background that many people don’t know, but that have directly influenced how I drive differentiated marketing growth and lead connected, high-trust teams.  If nothing else - you'll learn a bit more about me and hopefully - it add some inspiration for your own journey self-reflection!

I'm not (just) a product marketer - the series begins!  
       (see earlier post if you have no idea what I'm talking about 🧐 )

Learning leadership when there’s no room for hesitation.   🚤 

For ten years, I served as a Boatswain’s Mate with a Coxwain speciality in the U.S. Coast Guard. My job was occasionally simple in planning and often unforgiving in reality.  At 20 years old, I was responsible for people and 41 foot boats on open ocean and inland waterways, made fast decisions, and got everyone home safely. There’s no ambiguity when you’re navigating in rough water. You either know what you’re doing, or you don’t - and the consequences are immediate.  And without an effective team, chaos is gonna happen.  

More than once, I was in situations where I had to quickly triage and react - do I go after a boat in danger of sinking, call in a runaway tug or investigate a possible bridge jumper ...? (all within 5 minutes).  Manage my boat while ensuring my crew's safety, navigate (a few times) in 8 foot waves, prepping for a helo pick up someone we'd rescued and so much more - there were days that felt like minutes.  Oh yeah, and getting shot at, as well as having to shoot at a gun-runner off the Florida coast.  Good times.

Those and many other experiences shaped how I lead and how I operate professionally. Accountability isn’t a buzzword when you’ve lived it under pressure. Teamwork isn’t theoretical when everyone’s safety depends on trust, effective communication and clarity. And calm matters when things go sideways.   

In product marketing, launches slip, communication gets mixed up, markets shift, and plans change. I learned early that good leadership isn’t about being loud, always being right or reactive - it’s being steady, clear, and focused on outcomes, even in chaos.  Knowing when to lead, when to listen, effectively communicate and when to make a decision based on what's at hand.

I'm not (just) a product marketer - keeping the series going!

❓ Learning to ask better questions leads to better outcomes. ❓  

Before getting into business and product marketing, I spent seven years as a Nationally Board Certified Counselor. Getting my Master's degree in Counseling Education and working with a variety of people challenges fundamentally changed how I listen. It played off my empathic style, helped me better listen, seek to understand, identify challenges and develop a plan for solution.

Counseling  teaches you that most problems aren’t solved by talking more, they’re solved by asking the right questions, especially the uncomfortable ones people tend to avoid.  And - there were plenty of times conversations were hard, patience was important as well as persistence to help the person articulate their challenges and their story.  

Developing the skill of reframing to ensure clarity was definately an area that counseling really helped me with, and later impacted my capabilities in business and marketing. That skill shows up every day in my marketing work. Understanding buyers, aligning stakeholders, and building strong teams all start with curiosity and empathy. ☺️ 

I don’t default to assumptions or surface-level answers. I’m comfortable slowing conversations down, reframing the problem, and helping people articulate what they actually need, not just what they initially ask for. That ability - to guide people toward clarity and positive change - has been just as critical in boardrooms and launch war rooms as it ever was in counseling sessions.  

This is why the So What, Why, Who Cares framework has been such a big part of my personal and professional journey.  Challenging assumptions, seeking clarity, and focusing the need of the person/audience - just makes sense and fits!
