My career started as an assistant golf course superintendent in one of the oldest golf clubs in Kuala Lumpur after graduating with a Bachelor of Science in Agricultural and being promoted to Golf Course Superintendent two years later.

 Four years later, I was offered as Golf Course Superintendent at another reputable Golf Course in Kuala Lumpur. I oversaw the golf course construction and eventually to the maintenance stage. 
Curiosity regarding the investment world and financial literacy never thoughts in school made me further my self-study related to the subjects.

🔎We started off as a humble premium gifts company in 2003. In 2004, we were appointed by MasterCard Malaysia to identify, negotiate and secure privileges for their cardholders in Malaysia. 

We did this for 11 years and in 2015, we decided that there are other ways to make purchases affordable, other than extending upfront 50-90% discounts which negatively impacts the bottom line for companies🔍

If I could rewind time and start LinkedIn all over again in 2026,
I wouldn’t post few times a day like I used to do back in 2022-2024

I’d post once a day

Here are the 3 biggest changes I’d make:

1️⃣ I’d stop trying to sound smart
Back in 2020, I thought LinkedIn was a place to sound impressive

Big words. Big ideas. Very professional tone.

Turns out, the posts people remember aren’t the clever (professional) ones 

They’re the honest (simple) ones

The moment I started writing like how I actually speak, conversations happened (for me, everything changed when I started 'conversing' in Manglish🙊🙉🙈)

2️⃣ I’d connect with more Malaysians 

I tried to connect with everyone from all over

So I ended up connecting deeply with… no one 😱😅

If I started again, I’d be clearer:

Who am I really writing for this week?

Is it someone in UK as in Ulu Kelang (not United Kingdom) or LA as in Leboh Ampang (not Los Angeles)?🤷‍♂️🙊🙉🙈

Because relevance beats reach every single time

3️⃣ I’d focus less on “posting” and more on “listening”

Some of my best posts didn’t come from inspiration

They came from comments, DMs, and quiet observations in meetings

LinkedIn isn’t a stage

It’s a long coffee conversation 

And the best insights usually come after you listen

What hasn’t changed?

Consistency still matters

Curiosity still matters

The "Hustle" Trap: What The Tortoise and the Hare Teaches Us in 2026

We’ve all heard it since we were toddlers: 

"Slow and steady wins the race"

In the context of the classic Aesop Fable, we usually cheer for the Tortoise’s grit while mocking the Hare’s arrogance 

But if we look at the modern Malaysian landscape, between the 9-to-5 (or 8-to-8) grind and the pressure of "kiasu" parenting, this story hits a lot differently

The Modern Hare Syndrome

In our digital-first world, the Hare isn’t just arrogant; he’s burnt out

Many of us are sprinting at 110% capacity 

We want the promotion by 30, the perfect "Insta-worthy" family life, and children with black belts in coding, piano, and Mandarin before they hit Standard 1 😱😅

But like the Hare, when we sprint without a sustainable pace, we end up crashing by the side of the road 

We see it in:

Working Adults: Chasing "sprint" goals while neglecting the "marathon" of long-term health

Parents: Enrolling kids in every possible tuition class, forgetting that childhood is a long-distance journey, not a 100-meter dash

The Tortoise’s Secret?🤷‍♂️

 Consistency > Intensity

The Tortoise didn't win because he was slow; he won because he was undistracted 

In Malaysia, we often feel the "FOMO" (Fear of Missing Out) 

If our colleague is staying late, we feel we must too 

If a neighbor's kid is in a specialized enrichment program, we panic

The Tortoise teaches us that relevancy is found in your own lane 

Consistency in your career—building deep skills rather than jumping at every "get rich quick" trend

And consistency in parenting, showing up for the small moments rather than just the big awards, is what actually crosses the finish line

When I first read that saying… I thought it was just fancy words for “keep trying harder” 🙄

But then came parenthood

Some days at work, I’m chasing deadlines like a marathon runner chasing a Grab at rush hour 🚗💨

Ten years ago at home, my six year old boy and four year old girl will ask me the same why-why-why question for the twenty thousand time about why the sky is blue 😱😅

At first I think

Omaigad again ah? But but but I tot we oredi settled this?🤷‍♂️

But after repeating the answer (louder every single time) 

When they finally stop and think before asking

That’s when I realised:

Small efforts — repeated with patience — actually change outcomes

At work: explaining tasks clearly, following up, checking in twice, not just once (dat's not nagging or micromanaging, just being present and letting others know if they need help)

At home: answering the same question with patience instead of irritation (is a huge challenge for me)

Getting my minions to memorize their multiplication tables was no walk in the park back then 🙊🙈🙉

Those small, repeated efforts eventually become habits that matter

Success isn’t always a breakthrough moment

Often it’s the sum of many tiny ones

The ones other people don’t see

Back in 2012, I worked on an idea with a beautiful plan

Not just any plan

A proper one

Milestones mapped

Dependencies colour-coded

Timelines stretching so far into the future they needed sunscreen 😅

We knew what we’d launch in Month 3, tweak in Month 6, scale in Month 12

Everyone nodded in agreement

Confidence level: high

Then reality arrived

Uninvited

Late

And with negative opinions😱😅

Customer behaviour changed

People left

Something we thought was “nice to have” suddenly became the thing

By Month 4, the plan was already… aspirational 😅

At first, we tried to defend it

More meetings

More slides

More explanations on why reality was “temporarily wrong”

Eventually, someone said the uncomfortable but necessary line:

“Are we executing the plan… or solving the problem?”

That was the pivot

We threw away more than half of the roadmap, kept the intent, and rebuilt from where we actually were — not where the spreadsheet said we should be

Here’s what I learned:

Planning too far ahead isn’t the problem

Getting emotionally attached to the plan is

Good plans give direction

Great teams know when to let go

Since then, I still plan — just closer to the ground

Back in 2000, when I first heard about unlimited leave, my initial reaction was:

“Wah… sounds shiok leh”

No more counting days

No more awkward negotiations

No more mental math like, “If I take Friday, can stretch to Monday or not?”

But then I watched it play out in real life

In some teams, unlimited leave worked beautifully

People rested more, planned better, came back sharper

No guilt 

No drama 

Trust went up

In other teams… something else happened

Nobody actually took leave

Because when leave is unlimited, the unspoken rule becomes:

“Don’t be the one who takes too much”

So instead of HR tracking days

People started tracking each other 😱😅

Here’s what I’ve learned over time —

Unlimited leave is not really about leave

It’s about culture

In high-trust teams with clear goals, adults behave like adults

Unlimited leave becomes flexibility

In low-trust teams with fuzzy expectations

Unlimited leave becomes pressure — just invisible pressure

Personally, I don’t think unlimited leave is good or bad

It’s like giving someone a sharp knife

In the right hands, it’s useful

In the wrong environment, someone gets hurt

So before asking, “Can we offer unlimited leave?”

Maybe the better question is:

“Do we have the trust and clarity to support it?”

⏱️ Why deadlines feel shorter than they actually are
 (and what to do about it)

Ever notice how deadlines always feel like they are due tomorrow, even when they are technically due next week?🤷‍♂️

I learned this the hard way — not once, not twice, but but but too many times until I lost count 😱😅

Many years ago, I committed to delivering a project paper for a bank

In my head: “Should be kacang puteh (easy) lah, got two weeks mah”

On paper: two weeks exactly

In reality: the deadline became next Monday before I knew it 😱😅

How did that happen?🤷‍♂️

Here’s the thing:

Deadlines not just dates, it's like mental block one

Our brain see the date, auto-panic like got ghost—even if still got time 😱😅

In the first half of the timeline, we dilly dally: 🙊🙉🙈

“Oh, I’ve got plenty of time”

Coffee breaks

Quick meetings 

Even worse?

“I’ll start tomorrow” 😱😅

And tomorrow becomes next week 🙈🙉🙊

Then suddenly?

The deadline is tomorrow😱😅

Why?

Because our brains use urgency, not calendar math, to allocate attention

And that’s why most of us end up sprinting in the last 10% of the timeline — the least efficient place to sprint

Over time, I found a simple mental shift that helped:

Break big deadlines into small decision points

Not tasks, but decision points

Instead of “Finish slide deck by Friday”, try:

Decide the core message by Tuesday

Gather feedback by Wednesday

Finalise visuals by Thursday

Suddenly, the entire week doesn’t feel like one mountain — just a few manageable hills

Here’s the key:

Urgency creates movement

Clarity creates consistency

When your deadlines become a series of clear mini-obligations, your brain stops panicking and starts planning

And the amazing thing?🤷‍♂️

You end up finishing before the deadline feels “real”

The best Malaysian workplaces I see doing well in 2026 all share one thing:

They say the hard things early

They talk openly about:

🔥 What “high performance” really means

🔥 What growth looks like (and what it doesn’t)

🔥 When extra effort is required — and when it’s not

Because clarity builds trust

And trust keeps people longer than perks ever will
