Patric Versteeg

Remco M.E. van der Schoot works at Utrecht University of Applied Sciences, researching cybersecurity behaviour, shadow IT, and shadow AI within the Cyber Security Research Group. Additionally, coordinating and teaching the course ‘Human Factor in Cybersecurity’ in the Master’s program in Digital Security.

With a multidisciplinary perspective and background, Remco conducts research on cybersecurity behaviour. He holds a Bachelor’s degree in Safety and Security Management, a Minor in Applied Psychology, and a Master’s in Project Management. He is currently pursuing his doctorate in the Department of Work and Organisational Psychology at Radboud University, towards employee shadow IT and shadow AI use. 

Human behaviour is complex and often irrational. This makes designing cybersecurity interventions challenging, as the risk is that well-intentioned measures may be perceived as pessimistic, condescending, or controlling, which helps no one. Cybersecurity can be more social by putting people first, since what is genuine wins.
