Last month, I got an unexpected request… and saying “yes” felt risky, but saying “no” felt worse.

I was at a speaking conference, watching the Friday night cabaret (basically Britain’s Got Talent for speakers), when two of my clients wandered over in the interval and said:

“Sarah… any chance you’ll do some comedy in the second half? Pleeeease?”

Now… I haven’t done stand-up in nearly two years. At least four prime ministers ago.

But if I said “no”?
What would my clients think?
Their coach doesn’t walk the talk?

Luckily, I’ve got a 5-minute set I’ve refined over the years.
I've developed the stories and jokes, tested and honed the delivery to deliver maximum laughs per minute.

(Pro comics target five laughs per minute, btw.)

I said, "yes, I'd love to help out'. 

Then I slipped out to the loo, pulled the set together on a piece of paper, and got in the right mindset.

I went on stage, held the paper like Dumbo's lucky feather, and then tucked it away once I felt back in the saddle… and it went down a storm.

I was chuffed to bits! 
People were coming up to me all weekend saying how funny it was.
A few asked me to speak.
Others asked how they could work with me.

None of that would’ve happened if I’d said “no”.
And it definitely wouldn’t have happened if I hadn’t got that material in my back pocket.

Here's why I'm sharing that story:

I didn’t get those laughs because I’m “naturally hilarious”.
Anyone can be funny, (I should know, I've taught stand-up to IT engineers and Accountants 😜) 

You just need to learn the mechanics, tools and practice. 
The formula. The Timing. Rhythm. Structure. Twists.
Not luck. Not winging it. Not “hope for the best”.

Most speakers want to be funnier… they just don’t know how to do it intentionally.

So they avoid humour entirely, or chuck in a random joke and pray, or worse try something that dies on its arse.

But when you know how to use humour properly?
You're more likely to get remembered, booked, and recommended.

That’s why I work on humour with my clients — not to turn them into comedians, but to help them understand the mechanics so they can use it on purpose.
