I feel stupid. I fell for it too. In the moral outrage against the Pentagon for ending Anthropic's contract - we are being manipulated. This has all been theater to cover the biggest orchestrated mob hit ever.

Look at the timeline of what happened yesterday, all in less than 24 hours.

Amazon invests 50B in OpenAI - getting them the exact AWS infrastructure that they need to be eligible for classified government contracts.

The Pentagon signed a new contract with OpenAI with the *exact* terms Anthropic had to 'stand it's ground' over - within hours of severing the Anthropic contract. This doesn't make sense, AND it doesn't happen without careful planning  - over a long time. 

No shade on Anthropic. They are the one player with any actual ethical and moral considerations in this game. Team Claude, all the way.

But now OpenAI can claim the same moral high ground, displaces Anthropic's front-runner status as the go-to for AI development and the only AI provider with L6 / classified deployment, stops a rival in its tracks when it was about to overtake them in revenue in 2026, and messes with their IPO plans.

They couldn't beat them on tech. So they beat them in politics and money. This was a hit on Anthropic by a bunch of thugs.

All while US taxpayers will foot the bill for untangling Anthropic's current foothold in the Pentagon.

It as never about the ethics of mass domestic surveillance or automated weapons. That's a perfect distraction from billionaires doing their thing.

Someone on your team built an AI prototype this month. Then someone else did too. One of them showed it to a VP before you knew it existed. Then two more people built prototypes.

Last Tuesday, a debate broke out in my live masterclass Director+ product leaders. 200+ senior product leaders in the room. 

Someone asked which tools to use for rapid prototyping. 

A VP fired back: "not relevant for VP level." 

15 people had opinions about that - and raised further questions. Who is building now, product or engineering? What's the right level of technical depth to be helpful, or even indispensable when it comes to AI? How about leadership - are we all just supposed to go be 'Super ICs' to be a part of AI development?

Here's where I come down: It is NOT the VP's job to build. But it's genuinely hard to lead something you've never done at least once.

LLMs are the one technology where the gap between understanding from the outside vs. the inside is biggest. You can't read your way to that intuition.

The leaders moving fast right now did the thing at least once, built the intuition, and got back to the work that only they can do - enabling their teams with what they've learned.

The most dangerous thing in tech right now? A majority of product leaders feel "confident" about AI... while missing the revolution happening under their noses.

I'm seeing too many orgs celebrating their "AI transformation" while shipping chatbots driven by top-down requests and cost-cutting automation. We're optimizing the wrong things, asking the wrong questions, and dangerously overconfident about our readiness to lead in the AI era.

3 signs you're in "AI prototype purgatory" (Director, VP, Head of Product — this one's for you):

1. Prototype chaos. Anyone on your team can build one. That's the good news. But there's no system to handle the onslaught — no way to capture the best ideas, kill the wrong ones, and keep AI momentum alive without making half the team feel like their work just got canceled.

 2. You're running pre-AI QA on post-AI systems. There's no evaluation tied to launch decisions. NOT "does it work" — but how often will it fail? In what ways? Under what conditions? The old test battery doesn't tell you that. You're shipping and finding out.

3. Risk is a document you wrote at kickoff and never opened again. You don't fully understand the risks you're taking. Leadership may not either. When data drifts or a model changes, you get a nasty surprise. Sometimes you have to roll back features that were already live.

*These aren't edge cases.*

Elena Luneva and I surveyed 60 leaders across industries. 85% have no clear path from prototype to production. 75% have no evaluation tied to launch decisions. 43% handle risk reactively.

That's the baseline; NOT a few struggling teams.

When it comes to AI development, you don't know what you don't know.

You're not alone in that. But there IS a better way.

THEY ALSO CALLED THEIR FRIENDS
Persona didn’t just use what I gave them. They went and cross-referenced me against what they call their “global network of trusted third-party data sources”:
• Government databases
• National ID registries
• Consumer credit agencies
• Utility companies
• Mobile network providers
• Postal address databases

I scanned my passport for a checkmark. They ran a background check."

Director+ product leaders: When it comes to AI, you're not behind. Almost everyone is in the same place.

Elena Luneva and I surveyed leaders across product, engineering, and ops  on one question: how does AI work actually move through your teams?

The short answer: it mostly...doesn't.

83% — ad hoc, chaotic, or inconsistent path from prototype to production.
71% — no formal way to evaluate AI outputs before shipping.
Only 11% — risk review actually embedded in their delivery cadence.

These are not outliers.

The teams aren't struggling with AI. They're struggling with everything around it.

Building is getting cheap. Coherence is getting expensive.

Chipotle's AI bot just helped a customer reverse a linked list in Python. Then asked if they wanted a burrito. That's pretty funny. Until you realize: what would YOUR AI feature do right now if someone asked it something it's not supposed to answer?

Not a jailbreak. Not a prompt injection. Just... a normal human being asking a weird  question. Like they do. (Believe me, at Alexa, we saw it all!)

Someone on your team tested "does it take orders correctly?" Nobody tested "what does it do when a customer asks it something we didn't think about?"

Your product recommendation AI — what happens when someone asks it for medical advice? Does it answer? Confidently? In a way that makes you legally liable?

Your internal assistant — what happens when someone pastes in a customer's SSN and asks a question about their account? Does it process that? Store it?

Your customer support bot — what happens when someone asks it about your competitor's pricing? Does it give a detailed, honest comparison? Including where you lose?

*If you're like 85% of teams building AI features - you don't know.*  Because your evals test what it's SUPPOSED to do. Nobody tested what it's WILLING to do.
                                                
*None of this is a personal or team failure..* We all inherited QA processes that test intended behavior. AI doesn't stay in its lane unless you build the guardrails — and nobody taught us how to anticipate the un anticipatable.

As a Claude Code-pilled Gamma Girlie, I am over the moon! 

Seriously, agentic workflows and Gamma have revolutionized how I create educational content for senior product leaders. I used to bemoan and begrudge the work to keep content up to date with the very latest changes.

For original content, I do a brain dump in Claude on what is essential for product leaders to know, cross-reference it with some perplexity research for anything I'm missing, debate and curate the best content to include, create an outline and drop it into Gamma, with a system prompt that's improved over time so I have to do less and less tweaking...

But what's truly revolutionary... a chron job runs to check for updates that matter.

1."Re-run deep research based on this outline, and tell me if there are any material changes that Director+ product leaders need to know about, and why they matter"
2."Make suggested updates to the outline, and re-create the slides in gamma"
3. "Email me a summary of the relevant updates, proposed outline changes & new gamma slide deck".

Two years ago, we made the biggest bet in Gamma's history.

I help digital health founders turn a great demo into enterprise adoption.

Anthropic Designated a Supply Chain Risk

Seven weeks ago, Anthropic launched Claude for Healthcare at JPM. Banner, Stanford, Novo, Sanofi — all on board.

Last Friday, U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) confirmed it's dropping all Anthropic products. The Department of War designated them a supply chain risk to national security.

The dispute was about autonomous weapons and domestic surveillance. Not healthcare. But the blast radius hits healthcare anyway.

If you sell AI tools to health systems, your buyer's procurement team just got a new concern: does your AI vendor have a stable relationship with the federal government? That question didn't exist two weeks ago.

Anthropic says commercial customers are unaffected. That's probably true. But "probably true" doesn't survive a vendor risk assessment at a health system that also holds VA contracts, CMS partnerships, or federal research grants. A lot of big academic medical centers do.

If your product runs on Claude and your buyer has any federal exposure, expect this to land on your champion's desk from their compliance team. Your champion won't evaluate it. But they'll be the one asking you to respond.

The irony is specific: Anthropic's pitch to healthcare was safety, reproducibility, rigor. Health systems bought it. That same safety commitment is why they're carrying a government designation typically reserved for foreign adversaries.

I don't think Anthropic should be designated a supply chain risk. Neither does OpenAI. Neither do most legal experts who've reviewed the statutory authority.

But the bigger problem is the precedent this sets for trust infrastructure in healthcare.

Healthtech founders spent the last three years building safety governance, responsible use policies, and compliance frameworks because procurement demanded it. Because patients' lives are on the line. Now the federal government just punished the highest-profile AI company for holding that same line. What does that tell the next founder deciding how much to invest in safety? Or the next procurement team deciding which vendor to trust?|

If you're in an active procurement cycle with a federally-connected health system, this is urgent. If you're not, it's worth watching. Either way:

-Ask your champion: does your health system hold federal contracts or VA affiliations? If yes, expect AI vendor questions from compliance.
-Have a vendor continuity plan ready before the question arrives. A one-pager: your architecture, your fallback, your migration timeline.
-If you built on one foundation model, start scoping what a secondary integration would take. Single-model dependency was already a flag in vendor risk assessments. This news made it louder.

The legal timeline on this designation is months. Your next buyer meeting doesn't.

The question your champion used to get: "Is this HIPAA compliant?"
The question they're about to get: "Is your AI vendor on the government's blacklist?"

Prepare them for it.

Healthcare AI vendors love saying "the clinician should have caught it."

Cool. So you claimed 85% sensitivity, delivered 33%, wrote a contract that pushes all liability downstream, and designed a system where overriding takes 5x longer than accepting.

But sure. The nurse should have caught it.

If you're a healthtech founder, this is what your buyer's risk committee is talking about right now. Audit logging, drift monitoring, subgroup performance disclosure — these aren't compliance extras. They're the architecture that gets you past procurement.

Last night, a consultant on stage at an OpenAI and Slalom executive event used the phrase "pilot purgatory" to describe where most enterprise AI deployments are stuck.

150+ C-suite leaders in the room. A lot of nodding.

He said something sharp about why: top-down mandates don't drive adoption. The CEO saying "thou shalt use AI" doesn't move people. What moves people is when someone two levels down says, "I love this tool, and I want more of it."

But that bottom-up pull only happens when leaders create space for it. And leaders only create that space when they actually understand what they're asking people to adopt.

The CIO sitting near me had just left a 7-year role. He said he learned more about AI in 2 months away from the job than in the entire time he was running the function.

That's not a failure of effort. That's what leading a large organization actually does to your bandwidth.

So the gap runs in both directions. Leaders don't have time to understand what they're championing. Teams don't have context to push back or build on it. Nobody's meeting in the middle.

That's why pilots stall after the first yes.
