How to build rapport in DMs without annoying your prospects

Most people think rapport in DMs means being nice. It doesn’t.

Rapport is built when the other person feels understood, not impressed.

Here’s how to actually build it:

1/ Slow down the pitch: If you jump into explaining your offer, you’ve skipped the human part. Start with context. Why are they here? What caught their attention?

2/ Ask Specific questions: Not: “Tell me more.”
But:
→ “What have you tried so far?”
→ “What’s the biggest blocker right now?”
Specific questions signal you care.

3/ Mirror their language: If they say “overwhelmed,” don’t switch to “optimisation.” Meet them where they are. Use their words. It makes them feel heard.

4/ Clarify before advising: Repeat back what you understood: “So what you’re saying is…” This builds trust instantly.

5/ Guide, don’t convince: Your job isn’t to win the conversation. It’s to help them reach a clear decision.

6/ Don’t rush the pivot: Rapport first. Offer later. If they don’t feel safe, they won’t move.

When someone feels understood, the sale stops feeling like a sale.

You can sound deep.

And still check your bank account like,
“Wait… what?”

Because content is distribution. But distribution of WHAT?

If there’s no positioning…
no clarity…
no system behind it…

You’re just yelling into the internet.

Here’s what actually makes content convert:
- Clear positioning (who this is for)
- Specific pain (what it solves)
- A defined mechanism (how you do it differently)
- A path to action (what happens next)

Without that, content just builds ego metrics and keeps you busy.

Coz if your content isn’t tied to revenue, it’s a hobby with WiFi.

You’re going to see more content in the future than ever before. 

Writing has become easy. AI removed the friction, so now everyone can produce. And when production becomes effortless, volume explodes.

But here’s what also increases: busy experts who look active and sound intelligent but still struggle to make money. 

Because now that they can write, they assume writing is the skill that grows a business.

It isn’t.

Writing is output. Strategy is direction. 
And output without direction just creates noise faster.

You can post every day. 
You can share smart insights.

How to turn your AI-generated content into client-generating content:

Okay, listen, AI can write posts. But AI alone doesn’t bring clients.

Strategy does.

Here’s how to make AI content actually work for your business:

1/ Start with the problem, not the prompt:

Before asking AI to write anything, define:
• Who you help
• The exact problem they’re struggling with

AI should amplify your message, not guess it.

2/ Add your experience:

AI gives information. You give perspective.

Edit the draft with:
• Your story
• Your client results
• Your lessons

That’s what builds authority.

3/ Tie every post to your offer (or at least 75% of your weekly content):

Most AI posts educate… and stop there.

Instead:
Problem → Insight → Solution → Offer.

Your content should naturally lead to how you help.

4/ Use clear CTAs:

Don’t end with “Hope this helps.”
End with: “DM me ‘PLAN’ if you want help with this.”

Content should move people closer to working with you.

5/ Stay consistent with ONE message:

AI makes it easy to create lots of content.

But authority comes from repeating the same core message from different angles.

AI writes faster. Strategy converts faster.

Prospect: “I post good content. I share valuable tips. I’m consistent with my posts. But still, I struggle to attract new leads and clients. My calendar doesn’t fill.”

Me: “What kind of content are you posting?”

Prospect: “Mostly educational content, things that help my audience understand concepts and solve small problems.”

Me: “And do you think just posting educational content is enough to grow your business?”

Prospect: “Yes, I think so! Everyone says post educational content.”

Me: “Then why are you not booking calls or attracting new leads and clients?”

Prospect: “Hmm... I don’t know.”

Me: “Okay, let me ask you this: Would you buy from someone who only gives you free information but doesn’t show why they’re the best person to solve your problem?”

Prospect: “No, I wouldn’t. I need to trust them and know they can deliver results.”

Me: “Exactly! So why are you expecting your Ideal Clients to do the opposite?

Here’s the thing:
→ Your audience doesn’t just want tips, they want to see transformation.
→ They need to know you understand their specific problems.
→ They need proof that you’re the right person to help them achieve their desired results.

Prospect: “Hmm, that makes sense. But how do I show them that? I’m already posting educational content that can help them.”

Me: “But do they really need that basic information? The kind they can easily find on Google?”

Prospect: “Hmm, maybe not. But then what should I post?”

Me: “Posting educational content isn’t enough. To build trust and get them to buy from you, you need:

→ A strategy that connects your content to your Ideal Clients’ specific problems and goals.
→ A strategy that can Attract →Nurture →Convert your audiences.
→ A system for leading conversations in your DMs and comments to build trust and guide them towards working with you.

Prospect: “Interesting. But how can I create that?”

Me: “You’ve got two options:

1/ I guide you, and you implement. 1:1 mentorship, comment 'SS' for details. 

2/ Comment “Strategy”  and let's see if we are the right fit. If so, I'll create and implement the entire strategy for you.

People don't ignore your DMs because they're not interested. They ignore them because they can spot a sales pitch in the first 5 words.

We've all gotten them.
"Hey! Loved your content. I help coaches scale to 6 figures..."
Or my personal favorite: "I don't usually reach out like this, but..."

Yes you do. That's literally what you're doing right now.

The problem isn't that DMs don't work.

It's that yours sounds exactly like the 47 other DMs sitting in their "message requests" folder.

Here's what I do instead:

I actually read what they posted + profile. Then I ask about it.

That's it. No pitch hiding behind fake interest.

Because here's the thing, if someone's dealing with a problem you solve, the conversation will naturally go there. You don't have to force it.

And if it doesn't go there? They probably weren't your ideal client anyway.

Stop trying to "optimize" your DM script.

Just talk to people like a normal human.

8 steps to Write non-toxic LinkedIn Posts:

→ Write as you talk
→ One topic at a time
→ Don’t overload with information
→ 1 Specific Problem + 1 Solution = 1 Post.
→ Cut down all the chunky words
→ Talk to one specific group of people
→ Use numbers, problems, transformations in the Hook.
→ Set a goal behind each piece of content - Attract - Nurture - Convert

Him: Every post ends with “DM me.” Feels desperate.

Me: That’s because most people use random CTA’s. Not purposeful ones.

Him: There’s a difference?

Me: Huge difference.

Him: Explain.

Me: There are Reach CTA’s. “Repost this.” Save this." These boost Reach.

Him: Okay…

Me:  Then engagement questions. Specific ones. “Which one are you struggling with right now?” “What do you think?” These boost conversation.

Him: That feels more natural.

Me: Exactly. Then you have trigger words. “Comment START.” Simple. Clear. Action-based. These are for Leads.

Him: That’s smart.

Me: There’s also a direct link CTA’s. “Grab the guide:[Link]” “Book the call:[Link]”  Low friction. And these Boost Sales

Him: So it’s not just ‘buy now’?

Me: Never. Each CTA has a job.

Him: So what should I use?

Me: Depends on your goal.
Reach? Use Save or Repost.
Engagement? Use a question.
Leads? Use a trigger word.
Sales? Use a direct action.

Him: Makes sense now.

Me: Good. Now tell me, what’s your next post trying to do?

Him: Hmm, let me tell you in the comments.

Me: Okay.

10,000 followers ≠ 10,000 clients. In fact, the math usually looks like this:

10,000 followers × weak positioning × no DM strategy = 0 clients

500 followers × clear positioning × strong conversations = consistent clients.

Without a bridge between
content → conversation → client

you’re just growing numbers. Not revenue.

I close 75% of my DM conversations. 

Not because I’m pushy.
Not because I “handle objections.”

Because I follow a simple framework:
CONNECT → RAPPORT → PIVOT → CLOSE

Here’s exactly how it works:

1/ CONNECT: No pitch. No agenda. Just a real conversation. Most people mess this up by selling in the first 3 messages.

2/ RAPPORT: Ask questions. Listen. Give value where it makes sense. Trust is built here. Not in your Calendly link.

3/ PIVOT: Once the problem is clear: “I actually help people with this exact thing.” Clean. Natural. No pressure.

4/ CLOSE: “Want to explore if I can help?” Not a hard sell. An invitation.

And the real secret?
I spend at least Week 1 building rapport.

Most people skip this and pitch on Day 1. That’s why their DMs feel cold.

When you rush the sale, you lose trust. And without trust, there is no closure.

The fastest way to kill a DM sale:

Ignoring that the person on the other end is drowning in identical messages.

Your competitors are sending the same "quick question" openers and "just circling back" follow-ups. So when you show up sounding exactly like everyone else, you've already lost before the conversation begins.

What breaks through? Specificity. 

A reference to their work that proves you've actually paid attention. 
A perspective they haven't heard. 
Value before the ask.

Think about the last DM that made you respond. It probably wasn't because someone had a great product. It was because they made you feel seen, understood, or genuinely curious.

Start there.

Consistency breaks when effort doesn’t match ROI.

When you see results, consistency becomes effortless. When you don't, it becomes torture.

So here's how to fix it:

1/ Stop measuring vanity metrics:
Views and likes don't pay bills. Track conversations, DMs, and discovery calls instead. Even 3 quality conversations are better than 3000 hollow likes.

2/ Shrink the feedback loop:
Waiting 6 months to see results kills motivation. Create weekly wins. One client inquiry this week = proof it's working.

3/ Reduce the effort required: If creating content takes 4 hours, you'll quit. Batch it. Repurpose it. Make it take 45 minutes. Sustainable effort = sustainable results.

4/ Celebrate micro-ROI: Someone saved your post? That's ROI. Someone messaged you "this helped"? That's ROI. Stop waiting for the sale. Recognize the progress.

5/ Fix your content-to-conversion bridge: If your content is good but nothing's happening, the problem isn't consistency. It's your call-to-action, your offer clarity, or your follow-up system.

All you need are better systems that create visible returns faster.

Because when you see your effort turning into results, even small ones, consistency stops being a struggle.

It becomes automatic.

How to use storytelling in your content

Most people think storytelling means sharing personal drama.

It doesn’t.

Good storytelling is simply experience + insight + action.

Here’s the structure I use:

1. Story: Start with a real moment

Example:
 “Last month a client told me she had posted almost every day for 4 months… and still hadn’t gotten a single inquiry.”

Now people lean in.

2. Realization: What did this moment reveal?

“That’s when I realized the problem wasn’t consistency. It was that every post was educational but none created demand.”

Now the reader sees the gap.

3. What I did: Show the action

“So we stopped posting random tips and started sharing positioning posts and client stories.”

Now the reader sees a move.

4. Lesson: Give the takeaway

“Consistency multiplies results. But only if the message is strong.”

You don’t need dramatic life stories.

Just real moments → insights → actions → lessons.

That’s it. Try this in your content.

Posting is half of the job.

The other half?

→ Using Data and starting a conversation in DMs.
→ Auditing what’s missing between views and DMs.
→ Making sure your content is doing its job: Attract - Nurture - Convert.

Most people stop at “I posted consistently.”

That’s like cooking a meal and not checking if it tastes good.

I don’t stop there.
I audit.
I track.
I test new angles.
I shift my approach based on what actually pulls leads in.

Because the goal is never just to post.

It is to attract Nurture and get paid.
