I love building enterprise AI businesses that focus on the people who use, buy, and sell the product. My belief is that scaling isn't about optimizing functions in isolation, but about creating a single, unified engine where the brand, the sales process, the product delivery and the daily operations all work together.

Joined Katonic AI to build its marketing function, but quickly saw that the real bottleneck was operational. To solve this, I expanded my role far beyond marketing, taking ownership of the entire non-technical side of the business - from sales and partnerships to finance, HR, and day-to-day operations.

I act as the bridge between our business and technology teams, I translate complex customer problems into technical briefs, ensuring what we build is what our customers need to succeed. This was about building a playbook for the entire business, not just for sales or marketing.

My career has taught me one thing, from being part of the founding team at Akasa Air to leading global initiatives at VFS Global and navigating turnarounds at Jet Airways and Godrej: in a market with no permanent technology advantage, a business that runs on trust and operational excellence is the one that wins.

Negative EBITDA. High burn. Crowded market. No differentiation. So many red flags. 

​But as a parent, I couldn't help but hope.

Ravi Gupta walked in with his daughter Siya, with a dream he built by selling family gold and mortgaging his house.

​And he walked out with nothing.
No deal. No funding.

Just a polite rejection in front of the person he wanted to impress the most.

​The result said he failed.
But I found myself cheering for him anyway.

​We are a society obsessed with success.
We casually ignore the courage it takes to take risks. Especially those without privilege. 

​Ravi didn't get the money. But he showed his daughter the hardest lesson of all.

​Not how to win.
But how to keep going even when you lose.

I once worked with a Sales Head who had an opinion on everything Marketing did.

​In every meeting, before his own sales targets were even discussed, he would pivot.

He would start listing how Marketing needed to "support better."

​And how he would do things differently.
If he were in charge.

​Then the Marketing Head moved on.
So the CEO offered him the role.

​He declined immediately.
Said he didn’t have the "relevant experience."

​This isn't about Sales or Marketing.
I have worked in both.

​It's about how everyone’s job looks easy.
Until you actually have to do it.

Growing up, my father used to worry about my education. 

Most of his postings were in rural areas so the schools I went to were at best, basic.

So he took it upon himself to fix that. 

Like this game he invented. Every week, we would choose a word we were banned from using.

We had to find a substitute.

​We couldn't say "Hot."
We had to say "Sweltering" or "Scorching."

​"Sad" became "Melancholy."
"Practical" became "Pragmatic."

​As a child, I found it annoying. Why use complex words when simple ones will do?

​I didn't understand the lesson then.
​
My dad came from a small village, went to government schools, studied on a sports scholarship. 

Always felt he could have done more in life. 

So he was trying to give me every possible advantage in life that he could. 

He didn't want my ability to speak a language to become a handicap. 

A lot of things that our parents did, 
Make no sense to us as kids. 

It's only when we have kids of our own that we finally begin to understand. 

The thing is, our dreams don't end with us, 
Sometimes they carry on through our children. Gently.

I once had a product which won awards but didn't sell. 

It was a fridge with a built-in music player & FM radio. 

The premise was simple, housewives could listen to music while cooking.

This was 15 years ago. 
The world was different.
No Spotify. No podcasts. No Jio.

It won design awards. It was called revolutionary. Yet, sales were poor.

So I started visiting stores to figure it out.

I watched a couple walk up to the fridge.
The lady looked at the buttons. She tried pressing them.

Silence.
She walked away.

I walked up to her and asked why she lost interest. Her answer was simple. She thought it didn't work.

Then she pointed to the wall of TVs. "The TVs are on. I can see the picture clarity. But since the fridge isn't working, how do I know if the speakers are good?"

That was the gap.

Shop owners keep fridges off to save power and avoid water formation.

Our customers never got to experience the product live.

I took this insight back to my seniors. Always super supportive, they immediately initiated a project with the Research Head.

We built a battery-powered workaround just to power the fridge's radio.

During Onam, we even tied up with a radio station. The stores came alive. The product started moving.

Instead of stock liquidation, the product kept selling for years.

The truth is, you can be an industry veteran with decades of experience. But nothing replaces talking to people.

As I still tell my team, 
Hear your truth from the real customer.
Not AI generated reports.

We mock people who stand the moment the airplane lands. It bothers me but I think I understand why they do that.

Is it because they feel their bags will be stolen?
Or that they won't get buses or cabs in time?
Or the immigration queue will be too long?

I think it's deeper than that.

It's a feeling that if any of that happens,
We are on our own.

A deep sense of distrust in the system.
A system that has repeatedly failed many of us. 

Unless you are rich and powerful.
Unless you have the right connections.
You are on your own. 

Everything exists.
Rules. Law. Enforcement.

But will it work for you?
Will it protect you when you need it?

One can never be sure.
That's why we rush.
Cut lines and break queues.
Ignore manners and others.
Look out only for ourselves.

The real problem is the nervous system of a country where everyone is nervous. 

Where we are all on our own.
And that is what scares us.

Saying we don't have civic sense is not enough.
Building systems that actually work is what's truly required.

LinkedIn is a professional platform. 
Yet, I often share stories that are deeply personal.

And honestly, I often wonder if I am doing the right thing. 

Then I look at the DMs I get.

When I write about becoming a dad at 40. Other older dads tell me how the anxiety of how long do they have with their kids keeps them awake too.

When I talk about how it took me 35 years to buy my first car. People tell me how they felt like failures for being "behind" everyone else. 

It is easy to assume that I am the one giving advice here. 

But the truth is, I am the one who needs it.

When I share these stories, and I hear from you. 
It is I who breathes easier.

We are all professionals, yes. And we have all been trained to share only our highlight reels. 

But the truth is, sometimes, it just helps to know we are not the only ones going through life's challenges.

It helps to know we are not alone.

We feel life was easier for our parents. 
I think it was a lot harder.

My dad worked in a bank. 
My mom was a homemaker. 
For 30 years, we lived in rented apartments.

Company quarters. Leased flats. 
Houses where you couldn't hammer a nail. 
Because the landlord would cut the deposit.

When they finally built their own home after retirement, it was a matter of pride. 30 years of saving, all for that moment.

The living room got the majority of the budget. 
Because guests would visit. 

The bedrooms got the teak wood. 
Because that is "investment."

By the time they reached the bathroom, 
The PF money was thinning out. 
So it became "purely functional." 
Basic tiles. Standard taps.

To be honest, I never really noticed it. 
It was just a bathroom.

Until my last visit.
I was bathing my baby boy. 
He loves the water and refuses to come out. 
So I sat on a small plastic stool, waiting for him to be finally done.

I just looked around. 
And I noticed the contrast. The compromise.

​I remembered it again, when I read the Asian Paints report on Indian bathrooms later. They call it the "least visible room."

Whether we accept it or not, our homes are a reflection of our life. 
How far we have come. And if we have made it.

We prioritize the living room because it is for the show. 
But the bathroom is for the soul.

A mirror where we truly see ourselves.
And what could be more important than that?

I was looking for a new blazer.
Something not black or blue. 

Green. Cream, even Pink. 

The tailor master insisted I double-check with my wife first. 

I was intrigued.
I asked him, "Aren't you the expert?

He smiled and said his opinion won't matter once I walked out of the store.

But my wife's opinion? 
It would matter every day. 

Maybe that's why in spite of having all the right data, we see expert advice so easily rejected. 

Because influence isn't about being right. 
Influence is about proximity and frequency. 

The people with the most access to the decision-maker usually determine what gets implemented and what gets ignored.

A middle-class upbringing is built on the scarcity mindset. 
Maybe that’s why we are so obsessed with “Extra”.

We try to multitask in meetings and end up missing the point.
We scroll our phones while watching a movie and remember neither.
We buy gadgets packed with features we never really use.

There is nothing wrong with it. 
Money is hard-earned. 
It is natural to want to squeeze the most out of it.

But the problem arises when the core purpose itself gets diluted. 
Term insurance is the perfect example.

We all remember our father's friends asking us to buy "mixed" policies. 
Protection and returns, all in one.

It sounds like the perfect ROI. 
But we usually end up getting neither. 
Acko Life Insurance's print ad calls this out perfectly.

When we try to make our insurance "earn" for us, 
We often end up shrinking the protection. 
And that is a dangerous trade-off.

Those who chase returns often end up with a cover so small, 
It simply isn’t enough for their families when they are gone.
Protection shouldn't perform. It should just protect.

Last year, I ran an experiment on myself.

I took the transcripts from our note taker of the daily scrum I was running. And fed them into a private AI agent.

The objective was simple: Evaluate my management style and give me feedback.

The first report was brutal.

Long monologues, context switches and using the word "correct" over and over again.

Stuff I didn't even know I was doing.
It stung. But I needed to see it.

Over time, I started fixing the gaps.
Becoming more self-aware.

Simple stuff, like speaking last instead of first.
And forcing myself to speak for less than 20% of the total call time, creating space for the "quiet ones" in the team. 

When we think of AI, we always start from the bottom. How it can make our team members better. 

I think we should start from the top. Help us become better managers and leaders.

It has happened to me. Multiple times.
