Most investors tell founders to build an audience but refuse to do it themselves. Here's why that's backwards

Yesterday at the Investor event co-hosted by Futrproof, 

An investor asked me: 

'Why should I build a personal brand when I can just write checks?'

It’s a fair question.
Here’s what I shared.

Founders with strong distribution perform better.

You already believe that.

You also encourage your portfolio founders to build an audience.

You prioritise founders who can attract talent, capital, and attention.

So the real question is:

Why isn’t the same logic applied to investors?

As an investor your work is more than sourcing deals.

Your work is attracting the right founders, supporting the ones you back, and increasing the value of your ecosystem.

Your audience is part of that ecosystem.

Have you thought about the traffic you'll drive to founders by building your brand?

Or the deals that would surface if your online presence did the first layer of filtering?

When a founder builds an audience, it supports one company.

When an investor builds an audience, it lifts an entire portfolio.

Harry from 20VC sends a video with his term sheet because he understands how founders think and how decisions get made.

It stands out.
It creates an experience.
It keeps him top of mind with the people he wants to back.

I also shared my belief on the importance of video decks in fundraising via PHIAM - the room agreed that its much easier to watch a video than just a deck, having both stands out.

Yesterday’s conversation reminded me how much I enjoy hosting events and hearing perspectives from both sides of the table.

Prospect: You guys are the best, can you send over a proposal ( by the way I don’t have a budget and don’t want to share it until I see your packages ) 

Us: Sure

Prospect: Ahhh I can’t afford any of your packages, my budget is £X 

Us: for £X this is what we can do ( reduce scope of work ) 

Prospect: Ok cool but I want to try you guys so I’ll do half of £X 

Us: ….. 

Prospect: Can you come next week to do a trial day, I want you guys to script, film, edit and then I’ll look at the contract and maybe sign it.

😃 you know what I’m most annoyed about - I saw it coming before meeting him in person.

Work with clients that value you, not ones that want to just take everything from you and flee ( happened once too… )

2026 is the year you'll see more people doing live streams.

And more 7 hour+ long videos. ( Might want to rethink letting your kids/partner watch an extra video before bed  )

others like him and Mr Beast are going all into live streaming this year.

Is your investor call starting the same way?
"So, let me clarify what we actually do now..."

Then you spend 20 minutes rewinding. 
Re-explaining. Correcting the version of your company that lived in their head before you even got on the call.

Your product evolved six months ago. 
Your strategy pivoted last quarter.
But somehow, you're still fundraising against who you were.

This is narrative lag.
And it's the silent deal-killer.

By the time investors understand what you're building now, the meeting's over.

They're evaluating the outdated positioning. 
The strategy you already outgrew.

The best founders win because the story was already in motion before the room.

When your narrative is clear, consistent, and public: 
Trust builds before you ask for it 
Conversations start 10 steps ahead 
You stop explaining and start closing

Your company moved forward. Your story's still standing still.
And every conversation you have is paying the tax for that gap.

The fastest way to move is to work, collab with the right people.
Yesterday I jumped on a call with some devs to jam on a social media tool idea.
We had 3 insane breakthroughs in 40 minutes.

Last week I was riffing on content with Anthony McGuire. 
By the end, we had a week worth of ideas.

When you put different brains on the same problem, 
you move faster and see things you couldn't see by yourself.

Your blind spots become obvious. 
Their ideas unlock yours. 
The work gets better and more fun.

Look for the right people to think alongside. 

If you're stuck, the answer is finding someone who thinks differently than you do.

Creating content is way more fun with people / a team. If you're creating solo right now, maybe start thinking about doing it with someone!

Connection feels rarer than ever.
That’s also why I care so much about creating it between the right people.

Sometimes that happens through events.
Sometimes through content.
Or a direct intro.

I’d pay almost anything for the right connection.

Because the right connection can change the direction of someone’s work, confidence, or life.

I’ve learned that connection usually starts with stories.

If you know me, you’ll know I'm more than a content girl.
I run events.
I make strategic introductions to people who should know each other.

I love watching what happens after an introduction.
The relief.
The excitement.
The moment when you see the spark.

I also love helping founders and investors share their stories properly.
There are so many stories people carry that could help someone else feel seen, make a better decision, or take a braver step.

2026 feels like a year for stories.
The real ones.
The ones that come from experience.
The ones that can’t be copied or manufactured.
