I grew up with nothing. At 14, I almost lost my life and it changed how I saw everything. Since then, I’ve felt a deep urgency to make the most of every chance I get.

At 18, I started my first business. I was coaching, selling courses, making £10K months while still at uni. Then at LSE, I built a blockchain startup. It pivoted into a venture studio, and I helped launch two others in spacetech and biotech. I learned a lot about the importance of relationships and collaboration.

I’m 25 and 3 months into building a new business from scratch.

A year ago I shut down my studio of nearly 3 years

Most investors tell founders to build an audience but refuse to do it themselves. Here's why that's backwards

Yesterday at the Investor event co-hosted by Futrproof, 

An investor asked me: 

'Why should I build a personal brand when I can just write checks?'

It’s a fair question.
Here’s what I shared.

Founders with strong distribution perform better.

You already believe that.

You also encourage your portfolio founders to build an audience.

You prioritise founders who can attract talent, capital, and attention.

So the real question is:

Why isn’t the same logic applied to investors?

As an investor your work is more than sourcing deals.

Your work is attracting the right founders, supporting the ones you back, and increasing the value of your ecosystem.

Your audience is part of that ecosystem.

Have you thought about the traffic you'll drive to founders by building your brand?

Or the deals that would surface if your online presence did the first layer of filtering?

When a founder builds an audience, it supports one company.

When an investor builds an audience, it lifts an entire portfolio.

I'd look at their content.

Founders stalk investors
Investors stalk founders.

Investors will ask your network about you, and they will look through your socials.

Question 1: "Is this founder obsessed with the problem?"

Traditional DD: Ask them in a meeting (they'll say yes)

Content DD:
Have they been writing about this problem for 2+ years?

Do they share insights others don't have?

Are they still excited about it after months of posting?

Question 2: "Can this founder recruit top talent?"

Traditional DD: Ask about their hiring plans (theoretical)

Content DD:
Do talented people engage with their content?

Do they have followers who are potential hires?

Can they inspire people through their writing/videos?

Question 3: "Will this founder be able to fundraise the next round?"

Traditional DD: Look at their pitch deck (one data point)

Content DD:
Can they tell a compelling story consistently?

Do other investors follow them?

Are they building relationships with future investors?

Question 4: "Is this founder coachable?"

Traditional DD: Ask references (biased)

Content DD:
Do they admit mistakes publicly?

Does their thinking evolve over time?

Do they engage with criticism constructively?

Question 5: "Does this founder understand their customer?"

Traditional DD: Ask about customer research (they'll have an answer)

Content DD:
Does their content resonate with their ICP?

Do potential customers engage with their posts?

Are they teaching things their customers find valuable?

This is the unspoken truth from investors,

Position yourself as a problem solver

Founders get further when they lead with the problem they’re obsessed with. Not the amount they want to secure.

I’ve seen this over and over again.

The founders who open with a number create distance.
The founders who open with a mission create momentum.

Investors meet hundreds of people every year.
Most conversations start with funding targets.

Very few start with a purpose worth remembering.

Everything changed for me when I stopped positioning myself as a studio and started communicating the problem I was actually solving.

Creators are exceptional at building audiences.
They’re not always equipped to build ventures or tech.
That gap slows down incredible potential.

It’s expensive.
It wastes time.

It kills momentum before it ever compounds.

When a founder articulates the problem with clarity, investors understand the direction, the intent, and the scale. 

Metrics matter more once the narrative behind them makes sense.

Marcus Lemonis says business is personal.
He’s right.
People back people.

They want to understand the mindset, the thinking, and the intent behind the work.

Video pitch decks give investors that insight.

They let founders communicate tone, conviction, and context that static slides never capture.

I’ve spent the last 7 months watching how Nick Green gets it there.

Working this closely with him has changed how I see the craft.

It is the way he moves through the process

the detail he pays attention to

the decisions he makes long before the camera rolls.

Every beat of the music is intentional.
Every angle, every colour choice, every lighting setup is deliberate.

I’ve watched him spend four hours shaping a single short video for a client because the story needed that level of care.

AI will support a lot of teams next year, but the person directing the creative still matters.

The one moment that changed how I understand friendship did not feel big at the time.

It was just Jenny saying something I could not forget.

We met when she was still studying at Imperial College London.

Today she spends her days around billionaires and family offices, helping scientists turn breakthrough IP into real companies through Nytrogen.

Her trajectory is wild.
The rooms she is in are wild.

What I admire most is who she is when no one is watching.

The moment that stayed with me happened in the middle of an ordinary conversation.

She said,
“I want to introduce you to people so you have a support system when I am not here. And if anything ever happens, I will fly over from Canada.”

She was completely serious.

I sat there thinking,
I do not think I have ever had a friend say anything like that to me.

I almost cried.
And it is not just the big gestures.

She bought me ketchup popcorn seasoning.
There is only one person in my life who would remember the detail of my ridiculous obsession with ketchup.

Last year she got me 2 (not 1) power banks.
Because she clocked how many times I text “sorry, phone about to die.”

Who am I to deserve a friend like Jenny Tang?

If there was an award for good friend, I would place myself very far down the list.

Through her, I have learned what support looks like.

Consistency.
Choosing inconvenience when it matters.
Regular emotional check ins.
Honest feedback that stings a little and still makes you better.

Beyond the friendship,
I learn a lot just by watching her work.
Focused.
Patient.
Completely herself.

Building a career with so much conviction that it makes you reassess what you thought was possible.

Her passion for scientist entrepreneurs is obvious.

We spent more than an hour talking about DNA, the periodic table, and the longevity space.

She knows her stuff. Deeply.

Some people anchor you.
Some people expand you.
Jenny somehow does both for me.

Long distance makes things harder in a practical sense.

But I never worry about us.

There is a calm certainty that we will keep growing in parallel, back each other when life is heavy, and step in when it counts.

I am excited for the seasons ahead.

To learn from each other.
To keep building a friendship that evolves as we do.

Yesterday I spent 3 hours writing a week’s worth of posts for a founder.
But those 3 hours weren’t just writing time.

They were research, empathy, and translation.

Here’s what I did:

I used his platform myself puting my shoes into those of his users.

I wanted to feel what his customers feel, see what they see, and understand what makes it worth their time.

Then I wrote down every question I had: the small gaps, the technical details, the “why does this matter?” kind of stuff.

We jumped on a call, and I asked him all of it.
Because nuanced content comes from context.

You can’t write what you don’t fully understand.
Once I had everything, I switched hats again this time into his voice.

I thought like him.
Spoke like him.
Wrote like him.

That’s what I love about this work.
ghostwriting isn’t just writing.

It’s a masterclass in how other people think.
(Learning hack: if you want a mentor, offer to help them write.)

The real job of a ghostwriter is getting inside a founder’s head and explaining their vision so clearly that others finally get it too in their tone, 

with their intent, through a process of iteration that helps them reach content–market fit.

Founders need help translating. They're amazing at what they do.

Turning what’s in their head into words that attract customers, partners, or investors who finally see what they see.

That’s the bridge I build.

A client said: We only hire people who are comfortable being on social.

That’s where it’s all heading.

Employee-generated content - the next stage of brand storytelling.

By 2026, your team won’t just represent the company.

They’ll be the company.

When Nick and I worked at a Series A startup, 

we made it our mission to get everyone creating even tho it wasn’t in our JD.

 At first, most said the same thing:
“I don’t think I have anything to say.”

Few months later, 
they were posting weekly.
Some still are, after we left.

Its clear to me in business that
a founder brand builds trust but a team brand builds community.

Think of your company like a film.
The customer’s the hero.
The CEO’s the main guide.

And the team?
They’re the supporting guides — the characters people fall in love with.

That’s why YouTube crews and bands work so well.
Different voices. 
Same story.

The audience gets the joy of learning from  story of the individual and the dynamics of the group. 

If your people aren’t comfortable showing up online, you’re missing out on more than reach.

You’re missing out on relationship.

This week, something happened in my business that broke a belief I didn’t even know I had.

For the first time, a client told me she chose to work with me because of how I think, not because of what I do.

She said:

“For this role, I need someone who can think, not do.”

She already has a team of great executors. 

What she needed was a different kind of value: 

original thinking, fresh perspective, ideas that challenge the status quo.

And that’s why she picked Futrproof.

For years, I’ve been paid to do things. 
Deliverables, source, write, create, execute

But this was the first time someone said, “It’s your brain I want.”

Honestly, it felt different.

It was like a limiting belief quietly shattered:

Grateful for AI, creating memories that actually look real 🤣

When I started helping others with content, I felt imposter syndrome.
I didn’t come from the classic personal brand world.

I built a student writing business.
Then a tech startup.
I ran events for founders.
I helped early startups with their tech and fundraising problems.

And now I was writing again. And filming. 
Guiding people on their voice.

I was nervous of this change.
Until I started asking the people who wanted to work with me one simple question:

What made you reach out?
Their answers put my mind at ease.

Here’s what they kept telling me:

I understand how founders think
 I give clarity they can actually use
 I know how to simplify complex ideas into content people follow
 I make the process feel easy rather than stressful
 I see blind spots they didn’t know were slowing them down

That’s when the imposter syndrome started fading.

Because people weren’t choosing me for how polished I was.

They were choosing me for the journey I’d already lived.

If you’ve pivoted through multiple paths and worry it makes your story confusing, know that people come to you exactly because of that.

His understanding of what makes a leader compelling
And the consistency it takes to show up behind the scenes every day

This is the part most young operators miss.

Most early-career people overlook this.

They chase attention instead of building expertise.

They try to stand out before they understand what excellence looks like.

You don’t need a loud personal brand to build a powerful one.

You need proximity, observation, and the discipline to translate what you see into stories people value.

Show the world the standard you’re exposed to daily.

Share what you’re observing.

Share the lessons you’re absorbing through doing the work.
