You see, Chubbies almost went out of business because of the exact problem we're trying to solve at Marathon.

In the early days at Chubbies we built Brand because we had to. We had no money. We were scrappy, creative, dynamic. 

And we built an awesome Brand.

Then we monetized that Brand with performance DR. 

We convinced ourselves that that was the source of our growth. 

We almost went out of business.

We righted the ship and built, brick by brick, to a >$100m exit, culminating in a >$1B IPO, and now, doing well over $100M / year at nearly a 30% EBITDA margin, but to do that we had to overcome the overwhelming pressure to take a short–termist approach.

As we've seen this direct–to–consumer brand market evolve over the years, we've seen the same cycle happen to nearly every other business out there: Starting hot, pushing performance marketing, then stalling out and never getting to long-term sustainable growth.

This was the problem we felt absolutely compelled to solve because we felt for these brand builders and entrepreneurs. We were in their shoes. And but for a whole lotta luck and a gritty–a** team, it would have sunk us.

Then we looked around and realized there just isn't anything on the market that helps companies do this — this most important thing imaginable.

I started Cheers nearly a decade ago while I was a student at Princeton University. After reading about the discovery of the alcohol-related properties of our hero ingredient, DHM, I couldn't think about anything else. Within 2 weeks, I decided to make a major career change, from Baptist minister to entrepreneur, and dropped everything to begin working on Cheers. 

I knew DHM was the future for the alcohol industry, and I believed that I had a unique responsibility to bring it to market in an ethical way. Starting in 2014, Cheers became the first company selling purified DHM at scale in the United States.

While getting this DHM formula into the hands of drinkers is a good thing, how you bring it to market is of the utmost importance. The fact of the matter is that even responsible drinking can lead to feeling less than 100% the next day. I believed that we could promote the use of DHM in a responsible way and ultimately create a category called "alcohol-related health"—which Cheers would be the crown of. 

Our human studies with DHM revealed that it was most effective when combined with cysteine and other ingredients. Today, these formulas are covered by US patent #9,603,830 (granted). Our big, hairy, audacious goal is "A Billion Better Mornings by 2035." With 25 million doses already sold, we're 2.5% there already.

When used in a proper way, alcohol is a good thing through its ability to bring people together. We work each day to promote the good of alcohol while reducing the bad. Our mission is "bringing people together through promoting fun, responsible, and health-conscious alcohol consumption." Just 2 brand building DUDES at Expo West!! Cheers has grown revenue from $8m to $40m+ from 2024 to 2026... that's 5x in 3 years. So much of that success comes from Sean Riley. He taught us 1) be ourselves & 2) push our brand past the comfort zone!!

Some quotes from him: 
"If you don't have haters, your vision's not big enough."

"For every emotional reaction, there's an opposite and equal emotional reaction."

"If people love your brand, you're going to have people who don't really like it or hate it. If no one loves your brand, you're just sitting in the middle... and that's like a flat-line bad position to be in."

Sean ended up being the inspiration for us doing "edu-tainment" and "Bill Nye the Science Guy" style advertising. 

Initially, we were afraid that it might make the brand look bad and too unprofessional... but Sean gave us confidence that we could break the rules and have fun with it. And that ultimately would serve us better by being ourselves and connecting with people in an authentic way, rather than being the way we thought people would want us to be.

They've always said that the best performing Meta ads are between 45 seconds and a minute and 15 seconds... We ended up flipping that on its head and changed our whole way of presenting the brand on social media.

We went from:
1) PROFESSIONAL (professional videos)
2) SHORT (less than 1 min ads)
3) LIFESTYLE (less science)

to 

1) FUN (crazy, wacky, etc... like pouring wine on my head 😂)
2) LONG (our typical ads are 3-4 minutes long now... we even had 1 go viral that's 1 take and 10 minutes long!!! 🤯)
3) SCIENCE (we don't shy away from explaining the science at all. We go into it at various levels of complexity, but sometimes we'll do 10 minutes' worth of complexity or 2 minute's worth of complexity.)

Now people come up to us on the streets, at airports, at bars, and tell us how much they love seeing our marketing and actually want to take selfies with us!!

-How much they appreciated the science explanations...
-How they share the videos with their friends...
-How much our products have changed their life...
-How grateful they are that we exist..

It makes me so proud that when I think about it, I almost cry with JOY when I think about how far we've come as a team/brand! 📈 🥰

That picture is us coming back from Bentonville last week. If it’s an event where I shouldn’t be trying to get too much attention (e.g., like wearing white at a wedding) I’ll switch to a regular suit but Lilly shirt underneath.

Then Shelby and I always try to match or coordinate together!

Our brand pillars at Cheers are 1) SCIENCE, 2) FUN, and 3) DEFYING AGING. 

We want to bring Bill Nye The Science Guy energy… but like he’s on a tropical vacation and having some cocktails. And still being able to enjoy life and thriving in his 30s, 40s, 50s, and 60s… WITH KIDS!

That’s the “vibe” we’re trying to bring to the world with our branding/marketing/sales. It’s also the life we’re trying to live and help our customers live!👨‍🔬🌴🍹

Brooks = Panic Attacks?! You bet… I started getting them when I was ~22 and about a year into Cheers and 6 months after retiring from D1 swimming. Here’s what I’ve found so far!

My first panic attack happened at an airport. I flew from Houston to San Francisco for a weekend of hanging with some advisors I just brought onto Cheers as well as the Chubbies team. They had some festival that weekend so it ended up being long days with late nights, early mornings, and lots of booze.

When I was at the airport on the way home… I was exhausted but juiced up on some caffeine anyways. All the sudden it felt like my heart was skipping and I felt light headed and like my world was ending. I power walked the airport to try and calm my nerves and then forced myself onto the plane.

Freaking out that I was dying, I told the lady next to me: “hey if I’m acting weird, it’s cause I don’t feel well.” She was a nurse and explained—“look, you’re 23… you were an athlete… your heart is probably fine and it’s just a panic attack.” I didn’t believe her—but it was enough to get me through the flight.

Then next week I saw a heart doc. Got an ultrasound, wore a heart monitor for a week—forced myself to where I felt the effects again so it could be measured on it, etc. I was convinced and determined to figure out what was wrong with me.

All the tests came back showing I was perfect… it was really “all in my head”.

Doc prescribed a beta blocker for any time I felt them coming on. And that did the trick for when they did come… but only reactively, and usually my day would be shot from the event + hangover from it.

I lived that way with panic attacks every so often through my 20s. They got more frequent during busy stretches without much sleep, high stress, etc. And lowered when life was easier.

Ollie was born 2.5 years ago, shortly after I turned 30. That was a big wake-up call that I should really start taking my health seriously.

I started exercising again for the first time in a decade since I retired from D1 swimming. I also got serious about my diet, sleep, and stress—or at least a better mindset about tough times. I went pretty extreme and even got a sauna, cold plunge, cooling bed, tracked sleep, etc.

Magically, despite the business being harder than ever from all the growth and complexity, emotional weight of leadership, etc… on top of now having a child at home—and that hurting sleep, I went over 2 years without a panic attack!

Diet, sleep, and a different mindset about “stress” all help SIGNIFICANTLY. But for me the magic bullet is exercise—if I could only have 1 of them—it’s exercise. If I get 2x hard 1-1.5 hour workout sessions per week, I feel mentally bulletproof, especially if I get decent sleep. No matter how hard life gets!

It’s like it blows off the nervous tension steam so it doesn’t need another way out.

The harder life gets… the more I found I have to take care of myself. You can’t give/lead/work from an empty cup! It’s a life discipline.

$30k -> $130k/day: We're almost through Q1 2026... how is Cheers doing so far?! Well, here's a look at our eComm Revenue across Amazon/Website/TikTok vs our digital ad spend primarily across FB/Insta/TikTok. 👀📈

Pretty crazy to see this progress in 14 months: We've gone from $30k days in January 2025... to $130k days in March 2026! 🤯

You'll see that we are spending a LOT right now. Like ~$60k/day primarily on social media... how is that possible?!

1) You don't know how efficient that spend is from a new customer perspective. We run our eComm business on a LTV:CAC model, with certain payback windows that we're optimizing for.

So if we can get good customers at our desired CAC... we will invest HEAVILY & DEEPLY as it leads to long-term profit while making the short-term profit look lower. We NEVER pass up a good opportunity to acquire a lot of customers at our CAC targets!!

But this IS ultimately profitable spend—even before considering its wonderful effects on our brick & mortar retail business.

2) You also can't see our brick & mortar retail business here. But the long-story short is that this social media spend "SPILLS OVER" into our retail channels. And those charts are looking OUTSTANDING with this growth in marketing spend.

I've talked about this a lot before. But we can very clearly connect our successful social media spend to our brick & mortar retail sales charts.

And we have some BIG retail launches coming this year. And as that ACV increases, it will help us capture significantly more ROI from our marketing spend than just the eComm channels alone.

And as I've explained in recent industry presentations... more ACV = more ROI on marketing. And the better the ROI on marketing... the more you can spend. And the more you spend, the more retailers give you more distribution and ACV.

So the "brand scaling flywheel" is: 
1) More ACV = more ROI on marketing
2) More ROI = more marketing scale
3) More SCALE = more ACV awarded by retailers

And then you just keep running up that cycle bigger and bigger and bigger. The success begets success.

This is how a brand goes from $10m/year to $50m/year to $100m/year to $500m/year. All while retailers love you for the growth you're driving them. The math doesn't work without the ACV as eventually the marketing efficiency caps. But with more ACV... the marketing efficiency never caps so you can keep busting through more ceilings!

We're firing on all cylinders right now on the acquisition front. But what I'm even more excited about is that we believe have a LOT more juice to squeeze this year in various parts of the growth engine. But I'll save that info for once that starts to pan out! 😉

This is a BIG WIN for the Cheers team. It's a major team effort across all of our departments from Marketing, to eComm, to Ops, to Retail, to Finance. And I am so blessed to work with such pros each day and experience so much joy growing and winning with them through these seasons!

The Consumer Healthcare Products Association Annual Self-Care Leadership Summit is next week. It kicks off with a day of golf... last year I WON the LONG-DRIVE... I hope you come dethrone me!! 💪👑

This is now my third year to attend, and it feels like a homecoming of friends in the industry. I can trace so many of our connections and success back to this organization and this event!

It's one of those organizations that I'm so grateful exists and so blessed to be a part of! And this event is arguably the crown jewel of their schedule each year.

Also, I really do love events that have golf! Not just because I don't get to play much golf anymore... But I've always found you spend 4-5 hours with a group of people, you end up knowing them really well. 

And over the years and through the events, you end up racking up a lot of close friends that you look forward to seeing each year. 🥰

I don't know if you know this... but my parents (Beth & Gene Powell) actually run Cheers' warehouse & fulfillment center! And they share the SAME BIRTHDAY on March 12th... different age... but how cool is that?!

ATTENTION ECONOMY 101: "Out of the 75,000 people here this week... YOU are the BEST dressed!!" I got a version of this statement over a dozen times at Expo West. I also tried walking through an airport with my suits and people literally STOPPED and STARED. 👀 😂

It's safe to say... these clothes get attention. People spend $25-250k on a booth for Expo West—why wouldn't they equally put that same level of thought into the wardrobe?

First... let's discuss living things and colors—because if you haven't noticed... many animals are VERY colorful!

Key reasons for animal coloration (not including camouflage) include:

Attraction: 
Bright & vibrant colors help animals signal their health and fitness to potential mates.

Warning: 
Brilliant colors warn predators that an animal is poisonous or dangerous, such as poison-dart frogs or snakes.

Startle: 
Flash colors can be used to temporarily stun or distract predators, allowing the prey to escape.

The 2 that probably are most fitting here are 1) attraction and 2) startle.

We live in a world where EVERYONE and EVERYTHING is trying to win our ATTENTION all the time.

We are not animals looking to blend in. We are not spies trying to avoid detection. If you have a marketing budget... then you fundamentally are a company/brand/person seeking attention. Otherwise you wouldn't have a marketing budget.

It's not vanity... it's the goal. That's why you market!! And the best way to get attention is to STAND OUT.

Trigger that "STARTLE" reflex. That's step number one.  Get the eyeballs looking at you. Then once the eyeballs are looking, hopefully generate some ATTRACTION. 😂 (And worse case—give out a WARNING... ideally to those you don't want to attract. 🤣)

We also live in a world that is very serious. And people are afraid to be themselves or have a little fun. So when people see someone having fun and wearing clothes that are less than normal... I think it's attractive to many people. (It may also turn some people off—i.e., warn them—and that's ok!)

Our brand pillars at Cheers are 1) SCIENCE, 2) FUN, & 3) DEFYING AGING. 

Our clothes are symbolic of that... especially FUN & DEFYING AGING. Because as you age, typically, you have a tendency to dress more modestly. You quit being that fun, rebellious kid you were when you were in your teens or twenties.

With our wardrobe at Cheers, we are trying to not just get attention but attract people that want to live well past their thirties!!

The contrast between California and Colorado… airplanes are a magical thing. Southwest is my FAVORITE airline… here’s why… and how I want Cheers to learn from them!

Their culture!!

They have 3 core values:
1) A fun-LUVing attitude. (Mindset/humor/joy)
2) A warrior’s spirit. (Professionalism/Winning)
3) A servant’s heart. (Other’s oriented)

Paradoxically they don't actually believe that the customer is always right… especially with their servant’s heart value.

The founder Herb Kelleher actually believed that employees come first—before customers!!

Why? The answer is quite simple. If employees aren't loving it, then how could you expect your customers to love it? And if customers aren't loving it then they're not going to want to pay for it and shareholders won't love it either. 

So employees > customers > shareholders. 

Most companies flip that order… and most companies don't kick their industry’s butt as consistently over the decades as Southwest Airlines has.

When employees love it, customers love it, and then shareholders love it—definitely over the long run.

Southwest actually has a policy that if a customer writes in to complain, the company will investigate it. If they decide the employee was acting in good taste, they'll actually write back defending the employee and suggesting the customer fly another airline… 🤣

Often the founder/CEO wrote these notes himself with just three words… “we’ll miss you!”

They simply understood that you can't be everything to everyone—and that you need to stand for something. That's what a brand is! 

And on an airplane your experience isn't just how the pilots and flight attendants and being on time make you feel; it's also the other customers. So you actually want to be careful about choosing your customers as well since that is something that shapes the fun environment and whether more customers will want to come or stay.

I LOVE the Southwest experience. Maybe it’s my energy, or shirts, or whatever. But from the second I get on, I genuinely vibe with all of the employees so well. I'm usually singled out and they tell jokes to me or make a joke about me (in good taste) or something.

Everyone in my vicinity ends up having a great time as well. It's like they're able to extract the joy out of you and everyone around you. (Which is such a big deal considering that air travel is typically cramped and stressful and not fun.)

I don't need first class to feel special... I much prefer good people and vibes. I actually have FUN when I fly with Southwest!

Cheers brand pillars are 1) Science, 2) Fun, & 3) Defying Aging.

And these flow from our core values, which are:
1) JOY in the Journey (attitude/mindset/etc.)
2) GROWTH is the Game (progress > perfection)
3) WIN when others Win (concept of win-win-wins)

What are values and why aren't things like integrity in these lists? 

1) Many values like “integrity” are table stakes.
2) You should have three values max and they should be what you over index in!!

Amazon went down yesterday… here is what that outage looked like in our Amazon app sales graph. You can see it was out for 3-4 hours in total before it looks like shoppers could complete checkouts again! 👀🤯

I haven't read the news deeply enough to know what the cause was. Some reports are that it was a drone strike in the Middle East that brought down a cloud server. Other reports are that it was merely a software issue. 

We were on pace for a $100k+ day just on Amazon before the outage occurred! 📈

I'm sure we'll see all of those people who are going to purchase, but couldn’t, trickle back in over the next few days. 

One thing I love about our Cheers brand power is that it drives so much demand that people will go out of their way to figure out how to purchase it.

We've had situations before where a core channel went down for a period of time and we saw as much as ~90% of it show up in other channels… 🤯

I used to lose a lot of sleep over stuff like this because it made me think about how fragile business is... but the truth is if you have an incredible brand with a ton of demand, customers will figure out how to purchase even if their preferred way of purchase is down.

Sure conversion rate might take a hit... which is not ideal. But it’s not existential… Which is a big difference!

That's the beauty of an omnichannel brand that has a ton of brand equity and demand!! Brand equity = sleep easy.

DAN MACK Elevation Forum in Bentonville w/ Walmart!! A few big takeaways from this session: 1) Vulnerability, 2) Psychological Safety, 3) Productive Conflict... and why this is better than 4) Artificial Harmony... let's unpack them! 👀

This forum couldn't have come at a better time for me... 

I'm currently working through many of these concepts personally and trying to apply them at Cheers as we have gone from ~8 people to ~25 people in ~2 years.

1) VULNERABTILITY 
Means the willingness to openly expose your weaknesses, skill deficiencies, mistakes, interpersonal shortcomings, and needs for help to your teammates—and to trust that those things won't be used against you. 

It even means the use of the word "sorry" and owning your mistakes! FREQUENTLY!!

But... to be vulnerable... it helps to have...

2) PSYCHOLOGICAL SAFETY
I'm going to steal Patrick Lencioni's definition of "vulnerability-based trust" to explain psychological safety: "[It's] the state achieved by a team whose members are comfortable being open with one another, leaving no room for suspicion or fear of retaliation. Team members who achieve vulnerability-based trust are comfortable being exposed to one another around their failures, weaknesses, even fears."

You need to feel safe to be vulnerable. You also need to feel safe to be willing to enter into conflict with others. Which brings us to...

3) PRODUCTIVE CONFLICT
Passionate, unfiltered debate around issues that are of importance to a team. It is limited to concepts and ideas, and avoids personal attack.

Productive conflict is about ideas and concepts—it can be passionate, emotional, even heated—but it never becomes personal or mean-spirited. 

From the outside, it can actually look like a fight. The difference is that people who do it well "emerge from heated debates with no residual feelings or collateral damage, but with an eagerness and readiness to take on the next important issue."

Productive conflict is what vulnerable people do in a high trust environment. It is actually the healthiest way to behave. 

The opposite of productive conflict is artificial harmony... and that's what tears apart marriages, businesses, teams, orgs, partnerships, etc. over time...

4) ARTIFICIAL HARMONY
The state where team members avoid conflict in order to preserve a false sense of peace. Rather than openly debating important issues, people hold back their real opinions—and the result isn't actually harmony at all. The disagreements don't disappear... they just move underground into back-channel politics, passive-aggressive behavior, and personal resentment that's far more damaging than any honest argument would have been.

I'm out of space...  but if I could sum it up...
 
BAD = No open conflict, looks like peace... but conflict festers. (Nice, not kind.)
GOOD = Honest, heated, direct conflict in the open and in love. (Kind, not nice.)

In other words, in relationships, you want to save/build something, you have to engage in conflict!

A few months ago it was a bag of coffee along with a post card. On one side of the post card they used their portfolio companies logos/icons to write the ABCs in a cool mosaic pattern.

I’m not sure why we had it a few months later still… but Ollie picked it up yesterday morning and just started pointing to the logos and singing the ABCs. 🤣

I made him do it again to capture it on video… until he got bored! 

Shelby and I thought everyone might enjoy this cuteness boost this weekend! Vivvy is also doing well and loving life. 🥰

It's always been important to me to build a company where people feel like they get MORE LIFE from Cheers THAN IT TAKES from them. And like the value of win-win-wins, I never want a situation where me/Cheers winning means someone else losing.

I also believe that being able to cultivate joy is it's own competitive advantage. You work better when you enjoy (on the whole) what you do! As Dale Carnegie said: "People rarely succeed unless they have fun in what they are doing."

Last week was my birthday 🥳
And what better way to celebrate than with my amazing team at Cheers, who not only made a BEAUTIFUL card full of sweet messages, but also got together and tried to sing the birthday song in Spanish for me 😂 (with a little help from my fellow teammates from Argentina, Colombia, Mexico, and Ecuador lol).
These kinds of moments make you realize how the little things can make you feel part of a company that’s so far away, yet so close at the same time, and how important it is to have such a loving and welcoming team in remote work.
I couldn’t ask for a better job, but most importantly, I couldn’t ask for a better team and group of people to work with. Y’all make my day, every day! 💗
