“Certificates get attention. Labs build confidence”.


I see this a lot as a trainer.

Learners rush certifications - and that’s not wrong.

Certs matter.  They open doors.

But labs are what make you comfortable when the door opens.

Certificates test what you know.
Labs test what you can do when things don’t work the first time.

In labs, you learn how to:
 • Break things
 • Read errors
 • Troubleshoot calmly
 • Understand why something failed
 • Build muscle memory

That confidence shows up in interviews, projects, and real roles.

My advice?
Don’t choose one over the other.

Use certificates as structure.
Use labs as experience.

That combination is what turns learning into skill.

Something I’ve had to learn the hard way in tech:


You can’t say yes to everything.🫠

Early in my journey, every opportunity looked like the opportunity.
Every role, invite, program and trend, I wanted to do all of it. 

It felt like I was making progress just by being busy.

But at some point, I realised something important:

Being active isn’t the same as moving forward.

Some opportunities looked good on the surface but slowly pulled my time and energy away from what I was trying to build, as a trainer, mentor, and professional in cloud and cybersecurity.

What helped me was getting more intentional.

Now, before I commit, I ask myself:

 • Does this align with where I’m going?
 • Will this strengthen my skills or impact?
 • Will I be proud of the progress this creates?

If the answer is no, I’ve learned to pause.
Not because the opportunity is bad, but because it’s not aligned right now.

Focus has given me more clarity than hustle ever did.
And clarity has opened better doors.

In tech (and life), depth beats distraction every time.
