This chart compares electricity generation with CO₂ intensity over a full year. The contrast is striking.

France produces large amounts of electricity with consistently low CO₂ emissions, largely due to its nuclear-based system.

Germany, despite massive investment in wind and solar, shows much higher CO₂ intensity- a consequence of phasing out nuclear and relying on coal and gas to balance intermittent renewables.

Decarbonization depends on what actually runs when demand is high and the wind doesn’t blow. Removing low-carbon, firm power makes that harder, not easier.

The lesson is clear: Low-carbon power at scale requires firm, reliable generation alongside renewables.

A useful tool in any discussion is to ask one question:
What evidence would change your mind?

If the answer is “none,” it’s a signal to pause. At that point, the exchange is no longer about evaluating evidence, but about reinforcing a fixed belief.

When no observation could ever change a position, you’re not debating facts. You’re engaging with a belief system.
