Same moment. Different state. Different destiny.
 
You can often predict whether a player will miss or score 
a penalty before the ball is kicked just by the walk.
 
Player 1  
Shoulders tense. Jaw tight.  
Focus: “Don’t miss.”  
Meaning: “If I fail, I let everyone down.”  
The body contracts. The shot hesitates.  
Often miss.
 
Player 2  
Body loose. Breathe steady.  
Focus: “Pick the corner.”  
Meaning: “This is my moment.”  
The body expands. The movement flows.  
Often goal.
 
Same distance. Same pressure.  
Different state. Different result.
 
 
WHAT IS A STATE?

The concept popularized by Tony Robbins is simple:
State is the combination of three elements:

1. Physiology  
Posture, breathing, movement. 
The body influences the mind.

2. Focus  
What you pay attention to. 
Threat or opportunity.

3. Meaning  
The story you assign. 
Failure or training.

Physiology shapes focus.  
Focus shapes meaning.  
Meaning drives action.  
Action drives results.

Decisions Improve  
Emotional state influences risk perception 
(Lerner et al., 2015). 
 
Energy Drives Execution  
Performance follows physiological activation.

First Principles - Relationships. 
Why great relationships are not about you but about the other person and what you build together.

Lady Randolph Churchill, Winston Churchill’s mother, 
once attended two dinners with 
two different British prime ministers.

After the first dinner she remarked:
"When I left the table, 
 I thought he was the most brilliant man in England."

After the second dinner she said:
"When I left the table, 
I thought I was the most brilliant woman in England."

The first man impressed her.
The second man made her feel valued.

Great relationships when 
others feel seen, valued, and understood.

Happiness
Quality relationships are the strongest 
predictor of long-term happiness 
(Waldinger & Schulz, 2023).

Strong relationships significantly increase 
longevity and physical health
(Holt-Lunstad et al., 2010).

Resilience
Supportive relationships buffer stress and 
improve psychological resilience 
(Cohen & Wills, 1985).

 
WHAT actions to take

Five First Principles on Relationships

1. Trust
Trust grows through reliability and psychological safety. 
Keep your word, be consistent, listen without judgment,
and assume positive intent. 
Principle: Create psychological safety.

2. Understanding
Seek to truly understand the other person’s perspective, 
emotions, and aspirations. Ask thoughtful questions, 
listen carefully, and show genuine curiosity. 
Principle: Seek to understand first.

3. Appreciation
Express appreciation regularly. Notice small efforts, 
acknowledge strengths, and say thank you often. 
Principle: Show sincere appreciation.

4. Shared Meaning
Build experiences, rituals, and goals together. 
Travel, traditions, family habits, and common 
projects create shared memories and direction. 
Principle: Build something together.

5. Repair
Conflict is inevitable. What matters is repairing 
quickly. Apologize early, lower tension, and focus on
understanding rather than winning. 
Principle: Repair quickly.

First Principles - Relationships

Be a Free Spirit. 
Live by choice, not convention.

I find it fascinating what drives people 
to live their lives as they do.

There are countless explicit and implicit conventions 
about what a successful career looks like, 
what defines a great relationship, how to raise a family, 
and how to live healthily.

Many follow conventions without ever challenging them. 
They climb a ladder they never placed. 
They follow a script they did not write.

A free spirit is different.
“A free spirit is someone who is internally free enough 
to choose their life deliberately and 
brave enough to accept the consequences.”


WHY it matters

Agency
A free spirit strengthens agency 
Higher perceived control increases motivation, 
persistence, and performance under uncertainty 
(Bandura, 1997).

Coherence with What Matters
Living by chosen values increases coherence. 
When behavior aligns with intrinsic goals, well-being and 
sustained motivation rise significantly 
(Deci & Ryan, 2000).

Flexibility & Resilience
Detachment from rigid identity increases adaptability. 
Psychological flexibility improves resilience
(Kashdan & Rottenberg, 2010).


WHAT to do

1. Awareness & Detachment
List the conventions shaping your career, relationships, 
money, and health. Question each: 
Did I choose this or inherit it?
Principle: See the script

2. Curiosity
Expose yourself to alternative models of success 
and living. Read outside your field. Seek opposing views. 
Curiosity expands possibilities. 
Principle: Expand the frame

3. North Star
Define your core values, long-term ambition, 
and non-negotiables. 
Write a one-page personal constitution. 
Freedom requires direction, not drift. 
Principle: Choose your direction

4. Courage
Act in alignment even when approval declines. 
Make one visible decision that optimizes for meaning 
over optics this year. 
Freedom requires tolerating friction. 
Principle: Accept the cost

5. Discipline
Build systems that protect your autonomy: 
health routines, financial runway, deep work blocks. 
Discipline sustains freedom over time. 
Principle: Protect your freedom

Be A Free Spirit

Either / Or:  How to make major life decisions?
A simple question provides the right path. 

Major life decisions. Everyone faces them.  
Do I pursue this career or that career?  
Do I stay in my current job or change?  
Do I engage with this partner or another?  
Do I commit to the relationship?  
Should we get married?  
Should we have children?
  
All of these are major life decisions.
  
Some decisions feel clear; 
Others are far less obvious.  
Because they offer different paths.  
They involve trade-offs. 
Those choices can lead to regret
The regret of an alternative life.
  
I recently came across a beautifully 
simple question for navigating such choices.  
It comes from Søren Kierkegaard in Either/Or:
  
“𝗢𝗻 𝗺𝗮𝗷𝗼𝗿 𝗹𝗶𝗳𝗲 𝗰𝗵𝗼𝗶𝗰𝗲𝘀, 𝗰𝗵𝗼𝗼𝘀𝗲 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗼𝗻𝗲𝘀

(Self-Determination Theory; Deci & Ryan, 2000).
  
Life Satisfaction
People who make decisions consistent with 
intrinsic priorities report higher long-term 
life satisfaction and lower regret 
(Schwartz et al., 2002).
  

WHAT to do 
  
1. Imagine Both Futures
Visualize both life paths in vivid detail
career, relationships, daily life, identity. 
Notice which imagined future creates 
deeper excitement or discomfort.
 
2. Identify the Regret
 Ask: ten years from now, which missed path 
would create the heavier regret? 
Regret reveals priorities
  
3. Remove Perfection
Accept that no choice eliminates trade-offs. 
Every meaningful path sacrifices another possibility. 
Life is trade-offs
  
4. Follow Aliveness
Notice which option feels more alive, meaningful, 
or expansive, even if it is harder or riskier. 
Growth usually lives there. 
Energy signals direction
  
5. Commit Fully
Once chosen, stop revisiting the alternative path. 
Invest your energy fully in building the life you selected.
Commitment creates meaning

Either / Or - Life Decisions

Let’s figure out why people aren’t buying and fix it together.

I work with founders and commercial operators when a decision actually matters.

Not brainstorming.
Not motivation.
Real calls with money, people, and momentum on the line.

Most businesses do not stall because of effort or talent. They stall because the picture gets distorted. Too many inputs. Too much advice. Not enough signal about how the market and buyer are really responding.

My role is simple.
I provide an independent commercial view before decisions are locked in.

Hiring.
Offers.
Pricing.
Expansion.
Go or no-go moments.

I look at the context the business is operating in, how buyers are experiencing the offer, and where perception, trust, or confidence breaks down.

From there, I help surface what actually matters, what is being misread, what to decide, and what to ignore.

Sometimes that leads to a clearer growth move.
Sometimes it prevents an expensive mistake.
Often, it just removes enough noise for the right decision to become obvious.

I do not motivate.
I do not sell tactics.
I do not push frameworks for their own sake.

This work is about judgement. Understanding buyer behaviour, how sales is being perceived, and reducing the risk of getting the next move wrong.

Pressure does not always improve performance.

Often, it does the opposite.

It makes people move faster than they can think.

That is where a lot of bad decisions start.

Not because people are careless.

Because pressure creates the false feeling that speed 
will bring control.

So people:
Reply too quickly.
Decide too early.
Say yes too soon.
Act before they have thought.

It usually shows up like this:

1. Answer before thinking
2. Say yes too early
3. Chase the loudest problem
4. Keep moving, avoid thinking
5. Confuse urgent with important
6. Fix the surface, miss the cause
7. Look busy, think worse
8. Fill silence with action
9. Decide to escape the feeling
10. Cut your thinking short
11. Forget what matters most
12. React to intensity, not clarity

That is the real cost of pressure.
It does not just affect how people feel.
It affects how they judge.

A few things that help:

1. Identify the real source of the pressure
2. Separate emotional intensity from actual importance
3. Do not reply at the speed of your stress
4. Remove open loops instead of carrying them in your head
5. Decide what truly needs action today
6. Put a pause between the trigger and your response
7. Notice when activity is replacing thought

Pressure becomes expensive the moment it starts making decisions for you.

Clarity for high-stakes commercial decisions

Pressure doesn’t break teams. It unmasks them.
The moment it rises, you find out what the room can no longer hide.

You usually see it before the real trouble arrives.

A number misses.
A deadline slips.
A hard question lands on the table.

And the room changes.

Not dramatically.
Not all at once.

Just enough to feel it.

The update gets longer.

The answer that should have been direct comes 
wrapped in context.

The real issue sits in the middle of the room, 
and everyone keeps stepping around it.

That is usually the tell.

Strong teams do not need a comfortable room.
They need people to keep saying the real thing 
when the pressure goes up.

Weak teams are different.

The pressure rises, and people start managing exposure.
Words get padded out.
Ownership goes blurry.
Nobody lies, but nobody really says it either.

You can tell a team is in trouble when the truth 
starts getting handled too carefully.

So next time the pressure rises, watch three things:

1.Does the room get clearer, or more polished?
2. Does someone say the real thing early, or does everyone circle it?
3. Does ownership land, or start sliding around the table?

That usually tells you more than the pressure ever will.

Some of the worst frustration at work comes 
from feeling like nothing is moving.

You are trying.

Following up.

Explaining.

And still, it stays stuck.

That is why friction wears people down so fast.

It shortens patience.

Closes people off.

And drains more energy than the task itself.

1. You repeat yourself with less patience.
2. You enter meetings already irritated.
3. You stop thinking the next talk will help.
4. You read delay as a lack of care.
5. Small issues start feeling bigger.
6. You work around people, not through the issue.

Friction is not just frustrating.

It changes behaviour.

A lot of people are not driven by ambition. 

They are driven by the fear of falling behind.

Everyone has felt it.

That private pressure that says:

You should be further ahead by now.
You should have done more.
You are running out of time.
Other people are moving faster.

I was in a conversation this week with a 
group of founders and operators.

On the surface, we were talking about risk.
The bets they had taken.
The pressure of the last 12 months.
The weight of trying to make the right moves.

But the more we talked, the clearer it became:

A lot of what looked like ambition was actually fear.

Not fear of failure in the obvious sense.

Fear of falling behind.

That fear shows up in a lot of different ways:

1. Everyone else seems ahead of me
2. I should have achieved more by now
3. I’ve wasted time
4. I’m too late to catch up
5. I chose the wrong path
6. People my age are doing better
7. I’m not moving fast enough
8. If I slow down, I’ll lose even more ground
9. I’ve got less to show than I should
10. What if this is as far as I get?

That is the part people do not always say out loud.

They say they want more.
They say they are hungry.
They say they are pushing.

But often, underneath it, they are panicking.

Trying to outrun the feeling that their life is not 
becoming what they hoped.

What helps is not pretending that fear is irrational.

It is recognising it early enough that it does not start 
running your decisions.

What tends to help people most is:

1. Comparing less
2. Focusing on their own timeline
3. Redefining what “ahead” even means
4. Measuring progress more honestly
5. Stopping the habit of using other people’s visible wins as proof of personal failure
6. Building smaller, clearer next steps
7. Not treating every delay like a disaster
8. Accepting that some seasons look slower from the outside
9. Separating real lack of progress from emotional panic
10. Deciding what they actually want, not just what looks impressive

A lot of people do not need more pressure.

They need a better relationship with pace.

Because “behind” is not always a fact.

Sometimes it is just fear talking louder than perspective.

Feeling exposed does not mean something bad is happening.

Waiting to feel fully ready usually gives fear more power.

e) Do not treat every reaction as a verdict.
Someone not liking it does not automatically 
mean you were wrong.

A lot of good people make themselves smaller
trying not to be judged.

technically rested.

2️⃣ You sit down to work, but cannot think clearly.
Your brain is there. It just does not feel fully available.

3️⃣ Small things start feeling strangely heavy.
Simple tasks. Small decisions. Basic messages.
Things that should feel manageable start feeling like effort.

4️⃣  You lose patience faster than usual.
Not because you care less. Because your capacity is lower.

5️⃣  You do easy work instead of important work.
Not because you are lazy. Because important work 
needs clarity, you do not feel you have.

6️⃣  You become harder on yourself.
You call yourself lazy. Sloppy. Behind. Unfocused.
When really, you are worn down.

7️⃣  You keep trying to push harder, even though the 
real issue is how much you have been carrying for too long.

This is the part people often miss.

Burnout is not always collapse.
A lot of the time, it is long-term mental and emotional overload.

Too much pressure.
Too many open loops.
Too little real recovery.
Too long running on responsibility instead of energy.

That is why someone can still look capable on the outside, 
while feeling flat, foggy, and disconnected underneath.

If this feels familiar, start here:

a) Audit what is draining you, not just what is on your to-do list.
Burnout is often driven as much by mental load as visible work.

b) Treat irritability, brain fog, and avoidance as signals, 
not personality flaws. They usually mean something is overloaded.

c) Stop rewarding yourself for functioning badly.
Just because you can keep going does not mean the way 
you are going is sustainable.

d) Remove one pressure point this week.
Not ten. One. Something your system no longer needs to carry.

e) Build recovery into the week before your body forces it on you.
Recovery works better as a decision than as a collapse.

A lot of people are not just stressed at work.

Over the last 8 years, people at every level of work 
have described some version of the same feeling:

🟣 unseen
🟣 unsupported
🟣 alone in it

When do you feel most alone in your work?
That gives you something real to work with.

2. Take one small risk toward connection this week
A proper check-in. A short call. A more honest answer 
than usual.

3. Stop treating this like weakness
Disconnection usually means you have been carrying 
too much without enough support.

4. If you lead people, look past performance
 Someone can still be delivering and be quietly withdrawing.

5. Do not just ask whether you need rest
 Ask whether the real issue is isolation.

A lot of people are not struggling because they are weak.

They are struggling because they have been carrying too 
much of it alone.

I’ve seen strong teams lose their edge.
I’ve allowed it myself.

Avoid the awkward conversation and the bar drops.
Protect feelings and effort falls.
Tolerate it once and you’ve reset the standard.

1. You start the meeting anyway.
2. You say “good job” when it wasn’t.
3. You let your top performer bend the rules.
4. You ignore small mistakes because you’re tired.
5. You redo the work instead of addressing it.
6. You lower the target so it feels safer.
7. You let the moment pass without calling it out.
8. You excuse behaviour you once challenged.
9. You keep the peace instead of being clear.
10. You notice the drop in quality and say nothing.

None of this feels big.

That’s the problem.

Every time you let it pass,
you teach the team what “good enough” now means.

And once that line moves,
it’s hard to move it back.

Before your next meeting, don’t just reflect.

Pick one thing.
Call it out.
Reset the bar in real time.

Then hold it.

Ask yourself:
“What am I allowing now that I wouldn’t have last year?”

The pressure to keep up.

 🟣 To make the right move.
 🟣 To not fall behind.

 🟣 To keep going.

Most pressure does not look dramatic.

It looks composed.
Capable.
Still replying.
Still showing up.
Still saying “I’m fine” when it is clearly not fine.

That is why it gets missed.

You can look fully functional on the outside, while your 
head is getting louder by the hour.
Your patience shortens.
Your focus slips.
Your thinking narrows.
You start choosing relief over clarity.

That is when pressure gets expensive.

Not because you are weak.
Because pressure changes judgment before it 
changes performance.

You say yes too quickly.
Treat urgency like importance.
Carry things that were never yours.
Keep moving, because stopping would mean feeling it.

Action: 

1. Name the pressure properly.
2. Separate workload from fear.
3. Stop treating everything as urgent.
4. Decide what is actually yours to carry.
5. Pause before replying from a tired mind.
6. Create space before making important decisions.
7. Stop proving your worth by absorbing everything.

Most people do not break because they are weak.

They break because they have been strong for too long, 
with too little room to think, recover, or breathe.
