We wear busyness as a badge. (this includes me at times too)

Our calendars are packed with back-to-back calls, networking, and “urgent” tasks. We mistake motion for progress. But true strategic breakthroughs—the kind that redefine a category or unlock a new GTM vector—aren't born in committee meetings.

I wrote this note down as a reminder that we often get stuck in the first half of the equation.

We obsess over "finding the gift." In founder terms, that’s chasing Product-Market Fit. It's agonizing over features, perfecting the pitch deck, and stealth-mode building.

That’s necessary. But it’s just the aim.

The actual purpose of your startup—the thing that unlocks real growth and marketing velocity—is the second half.

Giving it away.

Shift your focus from "what have we built" to "who are we serving."
Impact doesn't happen in a vacuum. Growth doesn't happen until your "gift" solves someone else's painful problem.

Don't wait for perfection. Start "giving it away" faster.

What is the unique "gift" your startup is bringing to the market right now? 

Find that out.

Ever feel like you're building your company in a language only you speak?

That feeling, where your strategy confuses advisors, your priorities seem "off" to investors, and your roadmap makes your peers tilt their heads—that's not a sign you're wrong. 

It's often the first signal you're building something original.

We're taught to follow playbooks, benchmark against competitors, and seek validation at every step. But true category creators and market leaders aren't built by committee. They're built by founders who see a different pattern, trust their unique insight, and have the courage to walk a path that looks "inefficient" to everyone else.

I Watched Talent Lose to Hard Work Many Times.

You might not agree but thats fine, this is the truth I have faced.

Last week, a founder told me: "I hired the 'rockstar' marketer with the fancy portfolio. Now I need someone who actually ships."

I silently thought, well that's my forte  - what would have gone wrong ?

Sound familiar?

I've seen this pattern repeat across atleast 10 startups that I have been a part of in scaling up.

Here it how it goes -

-    The "talented" marketer who spends weeks perfecting a campaign that never launches.
-    The "genius" founder who waits for the "perfect moment" to pitch.
-    The "star" salesperson who talks a big game but misses quota.

Meanwhile, the unassuming marketer who ships 3 campaigns a week (even if they're imperfect) wins.

-    The "boring" founder who makes 100 calls a day (not waiting for the "right" investor) closes deals.
-    The sales rep who follows up consistently (not just when it's convenient) hits quota.

Here's the startup truth nobody wants to admit:

-    Talent gets you in the door. Hard work gets you to the next funding round.

Louis Vuitton was born in 1821 in a small village in eastern France. When he was just 13 years old, he ran away from home and walked more than 400 kilometers to Paris. Along the way, he survived by taking small jobs, sleeping wherever he could, and learning how to adapt. By the time he arrived in Paris, he had almost nothing — but he had determination.

In Paris, Vuitton became an apprentice to a box-maker and packer. This was an important job in the 19th century. Wealthy people traveled with many belongings, and everything had to be packed carefully by hand. Vuitton learned how to build strong wooden trunks and how to pack clothes so they would not wrinkle or get damaged during long trips.

His skills made him stand out. In 1854, he opened his own workshop in Paris. At the time, most trunks had rounded tops, which made them hard to stack. Vuitton introduced a flat-top trunk that was lighter, stronger, and easier to transport. This simple idea changed travel forever.

As his trunks became popular, copies appeared quickly. To fight this, Vuitton created special patterns and materials to make his trunks easier to recognize and harder to fake. This is how the famous Louis Vuitton designs began — not as decoration, but as protection against counterfeits.

Louis Vuitton died in 1892, but his work did not stop there. His son, Georges Vuitton, expanded the business and turned it into an international brand. Over time, the company moved from travel trunks to handbags, fashion, and accessories.

What makes Vuitton’s story interesting is that it did not start with luxury. It started with hard work, craftsmanship, and practical solutions to real problems. That is the key.

Your Tool Stack Is a Lie (And It Might Be Costing You Growth) 

Let’s be a little real here folks - 

You don’t need another marketing tool.
You need to do the work. Simple.

Last week, a founder showed me their “growth stack” — 14 tools, some $58k/month. that was cool.

but here is the catch - 

They hadn’t updated their website in 3 months. 
No content alignment rigour - quality, type, frequency.

Here’s the truth nobody admits: 

Tools don’t build growth. 
Execution does.

I’ve watched startups bleed cash on: 

-    AI chatbots before fixing basic onboarding 
-    Analytics dashboards while ignoring customer feedback 
-    “Automation” that just complicates simple tasks
-    Focussing on Tech rather than the Product

The HRTech space feels… cluttered in my region.

I was speaking with a friend — an ex-CHRO — about the basics of HRTech in SEA, beyond the usual noise. And something struck me.

We spend a lot of time discussing advanced modules, AI layers, experience platforms.

But at its core, isn’t HRMS still built on three basic pillars ?

Leave
Time & Attendance
Payroll

Everything else matters — absolutely.
But complete payroll automation? That’s mission-critical.

In my view:

1.   Payroll accuracy and automation is non-negotiable.
2.   Global stability of the payroll engine is the real differentiator.
3.   Scalability across multi-country, multi-entity operations defines enterprise readiness.

Your Brain Is a Terrible Storage Unit (And It’s Costing You) 

I know of a founder who fired a CXO last year.

Not because he was bad. Nup. 
Because they refused to write anything down in details.

The micro level working.

Their "system"? A sticky note on their laptop.
Their "process"? "I remember things." 
Just sketchy headlines I mean,
Which has technically no record.

Ofcourse you might record the meeting notes with AI but to summarise what you need to do and action them needs to pick up human brains -

Right ?

Here’s one key thing that I’ve learned while scaling startups and working with diligent and smart founders -

Your brain isn’t a storage unit—it’s a revenue leak.

Founders who keep "it all in their head":

→  Waste multiple hours/week re-creating what they forgot
→  Miss growth levers because their mental RAM is full
→  Create teams that drown in ambiguity (and burn out) 

The fix isn’t "better memory."
It’s brutal simplicity: 

So here are some simple suggestions - 

-    Write one thing down today (your top revenue driver, not your to-do list) 
-    Share it with your team (no explanations—just the raw data) 
-    Delete the mental version (your brain is a terrible archive)

I lost a global deal once because I was too busy trying to be “the best.” 

Some bare facts -

-    My team spent weeks perfecting a campaign - nobody asked for.
-   We missed the launch window.
-   The client signed with someone who shipped fast

Here’s the dirty secret many founders ignore:

-  “Best” is a trap. “Better” is a revenue engine.
-  The founders who scale fastest don’t chase perfection.

But, how does that work ?
These founders obsess over 1% daily improvements that compound: 

-  A 1% faster onboarding =  X% more conversions in 90 days 
-  A 1% clearer value prop =  Y% higher close rates 
-  A 1% reduction in churn = $ZK saved annually

All you need to do is calculate your X, Y & Z.

In Your Professional Life:
✅ The promotion you stopped chasing — You settled into your role three years ago. It pays well enough. But when was the last time you learned a new skill or took on a challenge outside your comfort zone?

In August 2010, a group of 33 miners in Chile became trapped underground after a cave-in at the San José copper-gold mine. The miners were stuck 2,300 feet underground and had no way of communicating with the outside world.

Initially, it was thought that all 33 miners had perished in the accident, but a note tied to a drill bit that was sent down a borehole changed everything. The note read: "Estamos bien en el refugio, los 33" (We are fine in the shelter, the 33 of us).

Once it was confirmed that the miners were alive, a team of experts was assembled to begin the rescue effort. One of the first challenges was figuring out how to communicate with the miners, who were stuck underground in a dark, cramped space.

The solution was to drill several boreholes down to the miners' location and send down communication lines. The miners were able to use the communication lines to talk to their families, the rescue team, and the outside world. They also received supplies, including food, water, and medical supplies, via the boreholes.

The miners were eventually rescued one by one in a specially-designed capsule that was sent down through one of the boreholes.
